Digital governance reshaping Arunachal: Khandu

Itanagar, Jul 23 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday reaffirmed the state government's commitment to transparent and efficient governance by embracing a digital-first approach to public service delivery.
In a social media post, Khandu outlined how the shift to digital governance is not just about modernisation, but about cleansing the system, restoring public trust, and eliminating opportunities for corruption.
'Reflecting at a time when governance was synonymous with long queues, misplaced files, and approvals that often depended on personal influence rather than genuine need, that's why we chose the digital path. Not just to modernise, but to cleanse the system, to bring back trust," Khandu said in a post on X.
The chief minister cited the implementation of e-office as a game-changer, where no file can go missing and every movement is transparently tracked.
The introduction of e-receipts has ended unofficial cash transactions by ensuring that every rupee is digitally recorded. With digital dashboards, delays are now visible and responsibility is clearly assigned, while online public services have eliminated the role of middlemen, allowing citizens direct access to the system, he said.
'This is how we fight corruption, not with slogans, but with systems that cannot lie," Khandu asserted.
Echoing this vision, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein lauded the sweeping changes brought about under Digital Arunachal 2.0, describing it as a transformation from 'geographic isolation to digital innovation".
In a social media post, Mein revealed that over 971 government offices are currently operating through the e-office system, having processed more than 2.45 lakh files and generated over 3.87 crore e-receipts to date.
He added that citizen-centric services are now accessible online, while real-time monitoring through the e-pragati dashboard is enabling faster and more accountable implementation of government schemes.
'This transformation reflects our commitment to building a Viksit Arunachal, where technology empowers every citizen and inclusive progress reaches every corner," the deputy chief minister added. PTI UPL UPL ACD

India has been added to the United Kingdom's expanded 'Deport Now Appeal Later' list of 23 countries, under which foreign criminals will be deported before they can appeal against the decision. Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the country's home secretary Yvette Cooper said, 'For far too long, foreign criminals have been exploiting our immigration system, remaining in the UK for months or even years while their appeals drag on. That has to end,' reported news agency PTI. She added, 'Those who commit crimes in our country cannot be allowed to manipulate the system, which is why we are restoring control and sending a clear message that our laws must be respected and will be enforced.' Who all are on the list Previously, the list included Finland, Nigeria, Estonia, Albania, Belize, Mauritius, Tanzania and Kosovo. The expanded list now adds India, Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Guyana, Indonesia, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda and Zambia. The UK government said discussions are ongoing with other nations to join the scheme. 'We are leading diplomatic efforts to increase the number of countries where foreign criminals can be swiftly returned, and if they want to appeal, they can do so safely from their home country,' said UK foreign secretary David Lammy. According to the home office, the new approach will reduce the burden on British taxpayers, as offenders from these countries previously remained in the UK long after completing their prison sentences. Around 5,200 foreign nationals have been deported since July 2024 — a 14 per cent rise over the previous year. Meanwhile, official data shows foreign offenders make up about 12 per cent of the UK's prison population, with annual prison costs averaging GBP 54,000 per inmate. (With PTI inputs)

Bengal Administration Pushes Back On EC Order To Suspend Officers Over Voter Roll Irregularities
The letter said taking 'premature and harsh' action before the enquiry's completion could be demoralising, especially for officials who generally demonstrate sincerity & competence The West Bengal administration has not implemented the Election Commission's (EC) directive to suspend and file FIRs against two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and a data entry operator over alleged irregularities in the processing of Form-6 applications for revising electoral rolls in AC No. 137 Baruipur Purba and AC No. 206 Moyna. In a letter to the Secretary of the Election Commission of India, the Chief Secretary of West Bengal detailed that an internal enquiry and review have been initiated into the matter. The letter argued that taking 'premature and harsh" action against the officers before the enquiry's completion could be demoralising, especially for officials who have generally demonstrated sincerity and competence. As an interim measure, two officials—Sudipta Das, PAAO, Tamluk Block and AERO, 206-Moyna AC, and Surojit Halder, Data Entry Operator, 137 Baruipur Purba AC—have been withdrawn from electoral revision and election-related duties. The Chief Secretary assured that a detailed action-taken report will be submitted after the enquiry is completed. The letter also highlighted that district-level and field officers handle significant workloads, often delegating tasks to subordinate staff in good faith. It suggested that launching disciplinary proceedings at this stage would be unnecessarily severe. The response was expected, as chief minister Mamata Banerjee had publicly stated last week that her administration would not suspend the officers in question. However, the EC's order was not limited to suspension; it also directed that an FIR be registered against them. Sources within the EC told News18 that in the past three months, all District Election Officers (DEOs), EROs, and other officials had been instructed to exercise extreme vigilance, with written undertakings taken to that effect. 'Even after such measures, how could this happen?" a senior EC source asked. The poll body had written a strongly worded letter on August 8 to the Chief Secretary, questioning why its order had not been implemented. According to sources, the EC is unlikely to be satisfied with the Chief Secretary's reply, and the letter could trigger further consequences.
