Pay Commission expected to benefit GDP, consumer categories: Aditya Sood

Economic Times4 days ago
Aditya Sood, Portfolio Manager, InCred Asset, says amidst tariff uncertainty and FII selling, the festival season offers a glimmer of hope. Rural consumption is expected to rebound strongly due to rising gold prices and balance sheet repair. Low unit consumption categories are likely to perform well. The upcoming Pay Commission is anticipated to positively impact GDP. Consumer categories are expected to benefit from the Pay Commission implementation.
ADVERTISEMENT Look at the way the markets are playing out right now. We are trading in a range because we are still undecided on how the tariffs are likely to play out and what is going to be the impact. The 25th August meeting is yet to take place. But one thing is very clear that it is the domestic economy that will shape the future of Indian markets and therefore, earnings are going to be a big positive trigger. Till now, how have the earnings shaped up for you and in the second half, how do you see the earnings play out?
Aditya Sood: As you rightly mentioned, earnings are very critical. If you step back, ever since the Covid lows, we had 25% CAGR in earnings getting delivered from 2020 to 2024. If you look at the long-term earnings trajectory, possibly it is like 12% CAGR in terms of earnings growth which is a combination of GDP growth and inflation, the nominal GDP growth. We believe that we are in a mean reverting environment.
Last year, on account of elections, state, centre, earnings fell off the cliff. Nobody was expecting that the earnings growth is going to be in that 5% sort of a vicinity. So, our belief is that we would be in a 10% to 12% earnings growth trajectory. Having said that, there are certain elements which are very critical. The first one being credit growth. So, credit growth clearly needs to pick up.
The liquidity is abundant at this point in time, but we do see a lack of fiscal impulse by the corporates in the sense that we do not see too much of capex happening. So the environment is very, very conducive. If you look at India's positioning, in terms of today, the risk-free rate has virtually collapsed. If you look at the bond yield differential between India and the US that leads me to believe that India's premium within the emerging market has already shrunk massively. We are in a very good environment as far as expansion of PE multiples are concerned and more importantly, in the last one year, the index has not gone anywhere, but one year return on a rolling basis is zero. We believe that this is a very conducive environment. The second half is going to be materially better in our view in terms of earnings growth essentially because of the base impact of earnings as well.
There is so much happening on the global as well as the domestic front. There is tariff uncertainty. FIIs are constantly selling in the domestic markets. At the same time, the earnings season is not as great as we expected, at least the first half and at the same time, the positive triggers for the market are missing. The only ray of hope right now is the festival season which will kickstart with Raksha Bandhan and it will go for the second half till December. Do you see festival-related seasonality factors playing around? Which favourable sectors are on your radar?
Aditya Sood: One has to take a one, one-and-a-half, two-year view. Post Covid, we saw urban consumption doing very well and one of the elements was mean reversion. For example, in a category like cars, basically an upgrade in terms of two-wheelers, we saw that playing out. The rural consumption story is directly correlated to income and with gold prices going up, I am a big believer that rural consumption will rebound very strongly on account of two fact factors.
ADVERTISEMENT One is that a bit of a balance sheet repair has gone through because in a $4.5-trillion economy, we have got two $2.5 trillion of gold holding. If gold goes up by 45 odd percent in a year, it helps in terms of balance sheet repair, and so that is point number one. Point number two is that two things are happening in the consumption basket. One is low unit consumption which logically should do well. There are a lot of people who have upgraded from the bottom of the pyramid and they are just above the poverty line. We are very constructive on the low unit consumption categories. Then there is the additional trigger of the Pay Commission which is going to come through.
ADVERTISEMENT In our view, this is going to have a 1% positive impact on GDP for the next year. Coming to the Pay Commission, if you go and see how consumer categories do in the Sixth and Seventh Pay Commissions, they always do well. Obviously, one has to take it with a pinch of salt in the sense that the number of employees on account of headcount of VRS and so on and so forth has gone down. It is not as large an impact as it used to be in the past, but still 1% of GDP is not a small impact.

"I am confident that the potential for mutually beneficial Ukraine-India cooperation lies ahead - in science, technology, trade, and culture. Wishing peace and prosperity!" he further said. Trump last week announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on US imports from India -- raising the overall duty to 50 per cent -- as a penalty for the country's continued imports of Russian oil. The tariffs will come into effect from August 27. India on Thursday said it has not halted oil purchases from Russia in response to the US president's tariff threat and continues to buy based solely on economic considerations. Responding to the US tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. "Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said. Trump has said that India's purchasing of Russian oil is "fuelling" the war machine.

PM Modi warns Pakistan on terror, flags infiltration

A stern warning to Pakistan of massive retaliation if it sponsors terrorism against India, strong steps against naxalism and those conspiring to change the demography of the country by allowing infiltrators to cross the border, an appeal to all parties to join the efforts at building a developed India and a reach out to Sangh fountainhead RSS for its contribution to the nation marked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech on Friday. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency While lauding the role of indigenous weapons and defence systems for the success of Operation Sindoor , the prime minister minced no words in sending across the message to Pakistan that not just terrorists but those sponsoring, abetting and training them will be meted out treatment far worse than they can imagine. "On 22nd April, terrorists crossed the border and committed a massacre in Pahalgam, killing people after asking their religion, shooting husbands in front of their wives, and executing fathers in front of their children. The entire nation was filled with outrage, and the whole world was shocked by such a massacre... Operation Sindoor was the expression of that outrage," Modi said. He praised the Indian defence forces for their action and insisted that the military had been given a free hand in formulating its strategy, choosing targets and the time of action. "Penetrating hundreds of kilometres into enemy territory, they reduced terrorist headquarters to rubble and turned terrorist headquarters into ruins. Pakistan is still not able to sleep. The devastation in Pakistan has been so huge that every day brings new revelations and fresh information," he said. Live Events "Those who nurture and harbour terrorism, and those who empower terrorists, will no longer be seen as separate. They are all equal enemies of humanity, with no distinction between them. Bharat has now decided that we will no longer tolerate these nuclear threats. The nuclear blackmail that has gone on for so long will no longer be endured. If our enemies continue this attempt in the future, our defence forces will decide on its own terms, at the time of its choosing, in the manner it deems fit, and target the objectives it selects, and we will act accordingly. We will give a fitting and crushing response," Modi said. He reiterated the stand on the Indus Waters Treaty , saying blood and water cannot flow together. India's waters were irrigating parts of Pakistan till this treaty was put in abeyance, he added. The Prime Minister spoke about internal security as well, saying that 125 districts were in the grip of naxalism 11 years ago but today the number has been reduced to 20 districts. Expressing his concern over a "deliberate conspiracy" to change the demography of the country through infiltration, Modi said, "Seeds of a new crisis are being sown." He announced the launch of a High-Power Demography Mission through which this crisis will be addressed.

Flick keeps faith in Barcelona to register new recruits ahead of LaLiga opener

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick remains confident his club will register key players including new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford in time for Saturday's LaLiga opener at Mallorca, despite ongoing financial fair play complications. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency The Spanish champions are still scrambling to register players due to LaLiga's strict financial rules, having spent more on signings and wages than they have generated in revenue for multiple seasons. "For me, the situation, you can imagine I'm not happy about that. But I know the situation and I believe in the club," Flick told reporters on Friday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo "We have to wait till tomorrow. It was the same situation last season. "We will focus on what we can change and what is in our hands. The other things, I believe in the club." Live Events Barcelona signed goalkeeper Garcia from local rivals Espanyol in June while Wojciech Szczesny has signed an extension, but neither player has been registered yet. The club's registration headache has been partly resolved through some dramatic internal manoeuvring involving captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The German keeper initially refused to sign a long-term medical leave agreement that would clear 80% of his wages and help the club comply with financial rules. Sidelined for at least three months due to surgery, he was stripped of his captaincy before it was reinstated when he eventually agreed to the deal. "I think the most important thing is that everyone speaks together. Marc and the club, they spoke," Flick said. "The most important thing for me, for Marc and the club is that he comes back. "He's shown for many years here that he's a fantastic goalkeeper and the important thing is that he comes back and is ready to play. We'll all help him, we're all on his side." The departure of 34-year-old defender Inigo Martinez to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr has also freed up crucial salary space, although Flick admitted mixed feelings about losing the veteran who was a mainstay in central defence. "I was a little bit surprised but I could totally understand him. I'm not happy that he left, he's a fantastic player and has a great personality," Flick said. "He was one of our leaders, he was outstanding not only as a player but also a personality in the dressing room. He deserves this and I wish him all the best." Despite the defensive reshuffle, Flick indicated he will not rush into the transfer market, backing the versatile 23-year-old Gerard Martin to step up. "Gerard can also play in this position. From what I've seen, I really appreciate that. Last season, as a left back, he was fantastic and improved a lot," he added. "When he played as centre back, he was doing well. He's a good option. I like players who can play in different positions."
