Summer vacation throws up a learning opportunity for children
The School Education department has been promoting self-learning sessions during summer vacation in Tiruchi to bridge the learning gap among children in Classes I to V and to boost admissions to government schools.
Children tend to forego the learning they acquired during the academic year during vacation. Government schools are using the downtime to upgrade students' skills while making learning an enjoyable experience.
The Andanallur block education officials have launched the Symbiotic Learning Model, an initiative to prevent learning loss among children in Classes I to V during vacation. It encourages children to study at home with their classmates with the involvement of parents and the local community.
Under the initiative, Panchayat Union Primary School in Kambarasampettai Colony has engaged around 55 students. A group of students forms a small study circle within the locality, which functions as a learning centre coordinated by parents. It operates from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
Everyday lesson plans and homework are sent to the students via WhatsApp. The students are asked to record a video of reading and speaking and send it to the teacher. The teachers monitor the progress and clear doubts online. The students are also given a topic to write about and are encouraged to use artificial intelligence editing tools to correct the passage.
Parents were trained to guide the students with homework and to effectively utilise mobile phones to access educational content, including apps, videos, and online resources to enhance the learning experience. Study material, such as blackboards and chalk, are also provided to students.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring that children receive continuous monitoring and support in their education and prevent learning loss during holidays. 'This would improve reading, writing, and speaking skills. Introducing them to AI tools would help them learn new words,' said S. Sivakumar, retired Principal, District Institute of Education and Training, Kancheepuram, who is the coordinator of the programme.
The school has 59 students and two teachers. So far, 14 children have been enrolled for the upcoming academic year. It offers chess, carrom, silambam, bharatanatyam and other extracurricular activities for the students. 'We aim to improve the admissions in the school as parents appreciate the efforts of the school in keeping the students engaged,' said R. Sukumar Ramakrishnan, headmaster.
The programme is expected to be expanded to other schools in Andanallur Block soon.

SSLC results: Dakshina Kannada district tops Karnataka after many years
Dakshina Kannada district took the top position with 25326 (91.12%) of the 27795 students passing the SSLC-1 examination. The district climbed to the top position after many years. Udupi district moved to the second position with 12215 (89.96) of the 13579 students passing the examination. The district was ranked first in the SSLC-1 examination in 2024 with pass percentage of 94. Among those who have passed in Dakshina Kannada, the highest number of students were from the Bantwal educational block (5375), followed by 5178 from Mangaluru North, 4944 from Mangaluru South, 4575 from Puttur, 3720 from Belthangady, 1811 from Moodbidri, and 1757 from the Sullia educational block. A total of 13799 students, who passed, were from English medium, while 11,527 students were from Kannada medium. A total of 251 specially abled children have also passed. From Dakshina Kannada, 712 of the 716 students passed in Tulu third language paper. Of them, 317 students have secured full 100 marks. All six students who chose Konkani as third language have also passed. While lauding the untiring efforts of teachers in preparing students, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Director of Public Instruction Govind Madiwal credited the success of students to their involvement in the 'Vijayebhava' programme, conducted by the District Institute of Education and Training. Under this programme, students solved five questions every day each on two topics for a period of 170 days, he said. Udupi Of the 12215 students who passed from Udupi district, the highest number of students were from Udupi education block (2883), followed by 2530 from Kundapura, 2469 from Karkala, 2407 from Brahmavar and 1926 from Byndoor education block. As many as 12,215 students who passed were regular students, 23 were private students, eight were regular repeaters, and five were private repeater students. Of the total students who passed, 7,519 were from the English medium, while 4,696 were from the Kannada medium. As many as 9,680 students were from rural areas, while 2,535 were from urban areas. A total of 5,572 students were from government schools, 4,264 from private schools, and 2,379 students were from aided schools. A total of 51 schools, including 15 government schools, have recorded 100% result. A total of 63 specially abled children have also cleared the SSLC-1 examination in Udupi district, an official release said.

Teacher edu diploma to give way to advanced courses
Panaji: The diploma in elementary education or DElEd programme , pursued after Class XII, was an essential qualification until now in the state for recruitment as primary school teachers. Now, the state has announced the discontinuation of the programme and has said no admissions to the first year of the DElEd course will take place during the academic year 2025-26. The course has been discontinued as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) implementation in the state. There were around 250 seats of DElEd on offer in Goa. Besides seats at the state-run District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) at Porvorim, spots were available at Nirmala Institute at Altinho and two other institutes located at Colvale and Cortalim. DElEd programme was earlier known as the DEd programme. Officials said that as part of the NEP implementation, new programmes will be introduced to replace DElEd. 'Instead of DElEd, students will pursue other advanced programmes like integrated BEd and master's in education programmes in the near future. Those who had done the diploma programme could only teach primary school students,' a state official said. The official added, 'This restricted their professional growth. The programmes which will replace the earlier course will offer better growth opportunities. Graduates will be able to progress to teaching high school students too.' Those already admitted to the programme and studying in the second year will continue their course in 2025-26, officials said. 'Teachers who have already done DElEd will be offered bridge courses to bring them on a par with the new NEP requirements. The NEP 2020 stipulates that by 2030, at least the minimum qualification for teachers be a four-year integrated BEd degree, including extensive practical training at local schools. Institutions will need to comply with this policy to be able to continue providing teacher education programmes. The NEP 2020 supports new programmes such as the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). The ITEP is a four-year degree (BA, BEd, BSc BEd, and BCom BEd) and allows specialisations in areas like yoga, physical education, Sanskrit, and art education.
