World Bank data validates PM Modi's governance as 269 mn lifted out of poverty: BJP leader Praveen Khandelwal
In a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's transformational governance, Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Chandni Chowk Praveen Khandelwal said on Sunday that the latest World Bank data reflects the success of inclusive policies that have uplifted millions. According to the newly released report, 269 million people in India have been lifted out of extreme poverty between 2011–12 and 2022–23. The World Bank data reveals a steep decline in the extreme poverty rate from 27.1 per cent in 2011-12 to just 5.3 per cent in 2022–23. This translates to a drop in the number of people living in extreme poverty from 344.47 million to 75.24 million over the past 11 years. Khandelwal credited this significant achievement to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, who assumed office in 2014. He said the sharp reduction in poverty is the result of direct benefit transfers, digital empowerment, rural development and targeted welfare schemes that have reached the grassroots. "Through targeted welfare schemes, digital empowerment, rural development, and direct benefit transfers, the Narendra Modi government has laid a strong foundation for poverty eradication and social equity," he added. Highlighting flagship initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, he noted that these programmes have brought real change to the lives of the poor citizens. He said that this milestone is not just a statistical victory, but a reflection of growing hope, dignity, and economic opportunity across the country. He added that it further strengthens India's journey toward becoming a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. According to BJP MP Khandelwal, the World Bank's findings reaffirm that under PM Modi's leadership, India is not only the fastest-growing major economy but also one that is ensuring no one is left behind in the nation's development. "This milestone reinforces the belief that under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, India is not only the fastest-growing major economy but also a nation where the poorest are being empowered, included, and uplifted," he said.

File/PTI A day before his government marks its first anniversary in third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has redefined women-led development in its 11 years in power. In all sectors, including science, education, sports, start ups and the armed forces, women are excelling and inspiring several people, Modi said on X. He cited a number of welfare programmes which, he noted, have benefitted women immensely. Various initiatives, from ensuring dignity through Swachh Bharat to financial inclusion via Jan Dhan accounts, the focus has been on empowering the women, he said. If 'Ujjwala Yojana' brought smoke-free kitchens running on gas cylinders to the poor households, 'MUDRA' loans enabled lakhs of women entrepreneurs to pursue dreams on their own terms. Houses under the women's name in PM Awas Yojana too have made a remarkable impact, he added. 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (save daughter, educate daughter) programme ignited a national movement to protect the girl child, he said. The prime minister shared a thread of a government-run citizenship engagement platform, which listed benefits brought to women by several government schemes. It said the maternal mortality ratio declined to 93 per lakh live births in 2019-21 from 167 in 2011-13, and the households with tap water connections zoomed to 15.64 crore in May 2025 from 3.23 crore in August 2019. Over 10 crore cooking gas connections were given under the Ujjwala scheme, it said, while highlighting several other welfare measures targeting women. It hasn't managed a major state poll win, and other opposition parties like the TMC and AAP have drifted away from the INDIA to PTI, Manoj Kumar, a Political Science professor at Delhi University, said Modi remains the dominant political figure in India. 'As long as Modi is around, there's no serious alternative to him,' Kumar added that while issues like the caste census and Constitution fears gave the opposition a temporary boost, Modi's image as a decisive leader, especially after Operation Sindoor , remains also noted that the BJP's decision to include caste enumeration in the census shows the party's ability to absorb important issues without becoming fully caste-based in its not having a full majority, Modi's government has confidently pushed ahead with its agenda.
