Conor McGregor is running away from a coveted trilogy fight with Nate Diaz, according to Jake Shields.
McGregor first met Diaz at UFC 196 back in May 2016, where he headed into the fight as a major favourite after compiling a seven-fight winning streak under the promotion. Never afraid of playing the villain, however, Diaz shocked the combat sports world when it took him just two rounds to wear the Notorious one down and submit him with a rear-naked choke, giving McGregor the third loss of his professional career and his first in the UFC.
An instant rematch ensued at UFC 202 in the August, where McGregor atoned for his loss by securing a majority decision win over Diaz after five hard-fought rounds. And while the two have not been able to secure a rubber match in the almost-decade since, Shields believes that it's all on McGregor's terms.
The long-time training partner of Diaz and former Strikeforce middleweight champion told Bloody Elbow: "I want to see Nate and Conor fight again, but Conor is being a b***h. Tell Conor to stop being a b***h.
"If you're Irish, tell Conor to stop being a b***h, tell him step the f*** up and fight Nate. Stop running. Everyone wants to see Conor and Nate bro, it's like the super trilogy, the biggest trilogy of all time.
"Two f***ing superstars, it's the fight everyone wants to see. Make the f***ing fight UFC, stop being cheapskates and make the fight."
There are several outside factors preventing Dana White and the UFC matchmakers from booking trilogy fight between McGregor and Diaz, however. McGregor hasn't fought since his 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier in which he broke his leg, and while he was supposed to return last June to face Michael Chandler, he pulled out on short notice as a result of injury.

Meanwhile, Chandler is still insistent that should McGregor make a return to the UFC any time soon, the two must have their night under the bright lights before the Dublin-born star is matched up against anyone else. Speaking to Mirror Fighting about his hopes of fighting McGregor in November, Chandler said: "I still believe Conor comes back at some point, and when he does, that road goes through Nashville, Tennessee, and Michael Chandler.
"We have to finish TUF 31, we have to get a fight poster that actually comes to fruition for a fight, we have to get a contract that actually comes to fruition for a fight but either way if the fight with Conor never happens, I am completely content – I wish him well.
"But I have a sneaky suspicion Conor does not want to sail off into the sunset the way he has right now. He wants to come back and needs to come back for Conor McGregor's legacy."

Many fight fans have pondered whether McGregor will actually make a return to the fight game at all, given that he appears focused on promoting his Bare Knuckle FC promotion and is entering the twilight years of his MMA career at 36.
Diaz, meanwhile – who is the younger brother of UFC and Strikeforce legend Nick Diaz – also hasn't fought in mixed martial arts since his 2022 win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279.
No longer a part of the promotion, Diaz has since ventured into the world of professional boxing. He suffered a unanimous decision loss to YouTube sensation Jake Paul in August 2023, before achieving a majority decision win over old UFC foe Jorge Masvidal last July.

Cork hurling fans' spending in Dublin plummeted following All-Ireland defeat

Disappointed Cork hurling fans' spending in Dublin plummeted following their county's All-Ireland final defeat compared to how much they splashed out following their semi-final win. According to its data, AIB's Cork customers spent €920,000 in Dublin on July 5, the day of the All-Ireland semi-final victory over Dublin. However, on July 20, the day Cork lost to Tipperary in the final, it fell by 13%. In contrast, Tipperary fans spent 27% more on the day their team claimed the Liam MacCarthy Cup than they had on the day of their semi-final win over Kilkenny on July 6. During the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final on July 27, Donegal fans spent 12% more in Dublin compared to the Kerry fans, despite their team losing on the day. Overall, AIB's Spend Trend showed customer spending in July was up 9% compared to the same month in 2024. Online spend has been growing more strongly, up 14%, than in-store spend, up 4%, over the 12 months. The average in-store transaction was €28.80 compared to €96.90 for the average online transaction. AIB's head of consumer Adrian Moynihan said the data highlighted the 'resilience of consumer confidence'. 'While the hospitality sector experienced mixed results, with pub spending down but restaurant and hotel spending up, the data underscores the dynamic nature of consumer behaviour during the peak tourist season,' he added. Spending in pubs was down 9% compared to last year, whereas restaurant spend was up 10% and the amount of money spent in Irish hotels was up 3%. Groceries was one of few sectors where in-store spend held up strongly, with spending 6% higher overall, and 93% of those purchases made in stores rather than online. Spending on clothing rose just 1% in July compared to the same month a year ago. Entertainment spending was up 8% in July, while health spending rose by 7%. The data was compiled from 78 million card transactions carried out by AIB customers in store and online during July 2025.

Carabao Cup: Barry-Murphy's Cardiff into second round

Brian Barry-Murphy's bright start as Cardiff City manager continued after the Bluebirds beat Swindon 2-1 in the Carabao Cup. First-half goals from Cian Ashford and Rubin Colwill were enough for Cardiff to progress despite a second-half strike from Princewill Ehibhatiomhan. And it continued City's unbeaten start to the season after picking up four points in two League One fixtures under the Irish man's watch. "Really pleased, it means a lot to me to get through to the next round and to see who we could possibly take on," he said after the win. "This competition creates so many brilliant occasions but to get to those occasions you have to go through the rounds. "So to win tonight was very important for us and we treated the game really seriously and I thought there was respect in that performance so I'm happy." Republic of Ireland international Jason Knight was on the scoresheet for Bristol City as they overcame MK Dons 2-0, Yu Hirakawa getting the other goal. Ollie Palmer scored a stoppage-time brace before Wrexham completed a remarkable comeback by edging out Hull on penalties. Elliot Lee opened the scoring for Wrexham but they seemed sunk following goals from Oli McBurnie, Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks, only for Palmer to score twice at the end and send the contest to a shoot-out. After a gripping 3-3 draw, Ndala rattling the crossbar with his spot-kick proved crucial as Wrexham prevailed 5-3 in the shoot-out, sealed with Jack Marriott finding the net with his effort. Bromley provided the biggest giant-killing of the night as the Sky Bet League Two side overcame Championship Ipswich 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes. Deji Elerewe gave Bromley the lead and although Ben Johnson equalised for Ipswich, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, a nervy shoot-out went in favour of the minnows. Sam Long was the hero as he saved two Ipswich penalties – leaving Marcus Ifill to convert the winning spot-kick and give Bromley their first ever win in this competition. Ben Close, Damola Ajayi, Robbie Gotts and Tom Nixon were all on the scoresheet as League One newcomers Doncaster pulled off another upset with a comprehensive 4-0 victory at Middlesbrough. Blackburn and Portsmouth were also knocked out by League One opposition, with both teams beaten at home 2-1 by Bradford and Reading respectively, while Owen Oseni's brace helped Plymouth come from two goals down to oust QPR 3-2. Mateus Fernandes' goal helped Southampton edge out Northampton 1-0, Coventry beat Luton by the same scoreline courtesy of Ellis Simms and Derby defeated West Brom 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Josh Sargent and Marcelino Nunez were on target as Norwich won 2-1 at Watford, Stoke got the better of Walsall 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw and Millwall claimed a 1-0 victory at Newport. Miles Leaburn, Ibrahim Fullah and Luke Berry scored in Charlton 's comfortable 3-1 victory over Stevenage. Charlie Raglan's own goal gave Preston a 1-0 triumph at Barrow, Tyler Goodrham's strike was the difference in Oxford beating Colchester by the same score and Swansea beat 10-man Crawley 3-1.

Heartbreak for Shelbourne as 90th minute goal ends Europa League dream

Shelbourne's Europa League journey ended in heartbreak as a 90th minute goal for Rijeka gave them a 3-1 win on the night and a 4-3 win on aggregate. It was an amazing atmosphere in Drumcondra as the likes of Bertie Ahern, Heimir Hallgrimsson and Stephen Cluxton were in attendance on a sunny August night as Tolka Park once again played host to another historic night in European football for Irish football. After doing the hard work in their 2-1 win on the Adriatic coast last week, Joey O'Brien's side knew the onus wasn't on them to score and in the opening quarter they played the tie masterfully. Mipo Odubeko, Ali Coote and Kerr McInroy ran tirelessly to put pressure on the Rijeka centre-backs and the Croatian league and cup double winners resorted to hitting many hopeless long balls in the opening stages. Milan Mbeng of Shelbourne reacts after his side's first goal. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile Shels had a decent shout for a penalty in the opening exchanges as Ali Coote went through on goal after Rijeka failed to deal with a long ball. The Scot was trying to control it when he went down in the area by Rijeka 'keeper and captain Martin Zlomislić but Romanian referee Marian Barbu and the VAR team didn't deem it enough for a penalty. As the sides went into the water break it would be fair to say that Shels had the upper hand, though they needed to get a hold of possession and that's what they did. A couple of nice crosses came in troubling the Croatian defence but as Shels grew into the game, Rijeka's star man Toni Fruk came up with a sensational goal. Toni Fruk of Rijeka celebrates after scoring his side's first goal. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile Fruk, who missed last week's match with suspension produced the moment of magic at Tolka Park shortly after the half hour mark when a Rijeka attacking move ended up with him being teed up for a volley just outside the box and Fruk lashed it home past Wessel Speel to give the visitors the lead. Shels began to look leggier, and halftime couldn't have come at a better time. The break allowed Joey O'Brien to introduce last week's hero John Martin came on at halftime for Ali Coote as he and Odubeko were at the centre of everything good for Shels going forward. Rijeka celebrate Tiago Dantas's goal. Pic: INPHO/Dan Clohessy Despite that Rijeka still allowed to grow more and more into the game as more space became available to them. The relentless harrying and defending in the first half caught up on Shels as their bodies became tired as the sun set in Dublin. Those tired bodies starting gave Rijeka a lot of space and that led to another moment of magic for the visitors, this time from Tiago Dantas. The Portuguese midfielder formerly of Bayern Munich picked up the ball over 35 yards from goal and he absolutely walloped the ball past Speel into the top corner to give the Croatians the 2-0 lead on the night and an aggregate lead in the tie. Mipo Odubeko scores his side's first goal of the game from a penalty. Pic: INPHO/Ryan Byrne As the clock ticked on it was John Martin that was the brightest spark for Shels and the Kilkenny man won his side a penalty after a long VAR check as he was pulled down in the box by Rijeka fullback Ante Orec. Odubeko stepped up and hit a frankly poor penalty that crept under Zlomislic into the bottom corner to get Shels back level on aggregate. However just moments later Orec made up for his mistake as he was inexplicably given acres of space and enough time to take the ball down, turn and drill a shot across Speel into the bottom corner to give the Croats another lead on aggregate, this time in the 90th minute. Ante Orec of Rijeka celebrates with Rijeka manager Radomir Dalović after scoring their side's third goal. Pic: Ben McShane/Sportsfile Shelbourne threw the kitchen sink at Rijeka but that was to be the decisive goal as their Europa League journey ended in heartbreak, losing 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. However, they still have something to play for in Europe as they will play the winner of Linfield and Faroe Island side Vikingur in the Europa Conference League play-off round next week for a chance at reaching the league phase of that competition.
