EIB backs Spain-France power link with 1.6 billion euros

LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) -The European Investment Bank will back a planned power interconnector between Spain and France with an investment of 1.6 billion euros ($1.84 billion), it said on Monday, after Spain and Portugal's governments sought EU help to improve their power links following a huge blackout in April.
Spain and Portugal's poor electricity connections to the rest of Europe were thrown into the spotlight by the countries' unprecedented power outage, which experts and officials said could have been less severe if the Iberian Peninsula had more interconnectors to exchange power with other countries.
The EIB, the European Union's lending arm, said it would support the Bay of Biscay interconnector via loans to Spain and France's power system operators, Red Electrica and RTE, who aim to launch the 400-kilometre project in 2028.
The subsea link would increase the amount of power that France and Spain can exchange, from 2.8 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts.
"EIB support for the France-Spain electricity interconnection will be key to ensuring that the Iberian Peninsula is no longer an energy island," EIB Group President Nadia Calvino said in a statement.
The causes of the Iberian outage are still being investigated.
Following the blackout, Spain and Portugal's governments asked the EU last month to step in to ensure new interconnection projects with France move ahead, a letter previously reported by Reuters showed.
Works to strengthen an existing interconnector between France and Spain are expected to wrap this year. France's RTE has also assessed two additional interconnections with Spain over the Pyrenees, but noted that the projects' beneficiaries would be located outside of France.
Thomas Veyrenc, board member at France's RTE, said on Monday that the Bay of Biscay project would increase the solidarity between France and Spain. Beatriz Corredor, chair of Red Electrica's parent company, Redeia, said the countries should also press ahead with the planned interconnections through the Pyrenees.
Iberia has just 3% of its electricity capacity connected to neighbouring countries, far below the EU's target for countries to reach 15% by 2030.

Exclusive: Energy and tech titans to talk AI in closed-door meeting

A who's who of top execs from oil majors, tech and power giants, and financial heavyweights will gather in private today in D.C. to discuss meeting AI's energy needs. Why it matters: It shows how the topic is central to C-suites as hyperscalers seek energy — whether it's gas, nuclear or renewables — to supply data centers. Top officials with Exxon, OpenAI, BP, Constellation Energy, Carlyle and many more are slated to attend. Driving the news: Two UAE companies are convening the ENACT ("energy and action") summit alongside the Atlantic Council, a U.S. think tank. One is XRG, a large energy investor launched in late 2024 and wholly owned by UAE state oil and gas giant ADNOC. The other is UAE-based AI and tech investor MGX. ADNOC CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, who's also UAE minister of industry and advanced tech, will host, and DOE head Chris Wright is expected to attend. It's aimed at bringing together people across the AI value chain. State of play: Axios exclusively learned details about the meeting, which was first broadly announced early this month. According to organizers, expected attendees include... Exxon CEO Darren Woods, BP CEO Murray Auchincloss, and Occidental boss Vicki Hollub. Tech execs like OpenAI global affairs head Chris Lehane and Crusoe co-founder and CEO Chase Lochmiller. Power execs including Constellation Energy CEO Joseph Dominguez, Emirates Nuclear Energy Co. CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi, AES CEO Andres Gluski, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, head of UAE renewables heavyweight Masdar. Investors such as Cantor Fitzgerald chairman Brandon Lutnick, Engine No. 1 founder Chris James and Carlyle chairman of energy Marcel van Poecke. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, who's seeking investment in a major gas pipeline and LNG project in his state. The intrigue: The meeting will cover both the immediate energy needs to 2030 but also longer-term decision-making and opportunities, organizers say. The idea is not just talking shop, but producing practical takeaways, with a report expected to follow soon afterward. This session will focus heavily on the U.S., which XRG has identified as a priority market, the organizers say. Catch up quick: Al Jaber has been increasingly focusing on the AI-energy nexus. "The race for AI supremacy is essentially an energy play," he said in March. "We need every energy option available." Today's meeting follows an earlier ENACT event in Abu Dhabi in late 2024. It's consistent with Al Jaber's interest in "majlis," an Emirati tradition of communal meetings that he deployed late in the COP28 negotiations. Friction point: Environmentalists fear that fossil fuels will play an outsized role in meeting data-center demand growth, adding lots of new CO2 emissions. And the U.S. buildout comes as Capitol Hill Republicans and Trump 2.0 officials look to massively slash clean energy incentives in the 2022 climate law. The bottom line: Al Jaber called ENACT an effort to "connect the dots between sectors to help drive coordinated solutions" on AI energy needs in the event's June 4 announcement.

3 Reasons to Buy Chart Industries (or Flowserve Corporation) Like There's No Tomorrow

Chart Industries and Flowserve recently agreed to merge in an all-stock deal. The two companies outlined significant revenue and cost synergies. Strangely, both bargain-priced stocks fell after the announcement, even as the merger looks beneficial. 10 stocks we like better than Chart Industries › Investors are always searching for new and exciting ways to play the AI revolution, with one being electricity providers. Specifically, nuclear energy stocks have taken off over the past year, given the newfound need for more low-carbon electricity. In spite of that, some industrial stocks that supply the nuclear and natural gas industries really haven't moved very much. Case in point, equipment suppliers Chart Industries (NYSE: GTLS) and Flowserve Corporation (NYSE: FLS) decided to link up in a "merger of equals," on June 4. The tie-up of these key equipment suppliers should save costs while also strengthening both companies' exposure to these crucial LNG and nuclear markets. After the announcement, both stocks look like huge bargains -- a rarity for any AI-exposed stock. Chart Industries is a leader in cryogenic tanks, heat exchangers, fans, and blowers that handle industrial gases and liquids. Meanwhile, Flowserve is a leader in industrial valves, pumps, and flow-control equipment. The companies believe that by combining, they'll be able to offer comprehensive end-to-end industrial systems for customers, from the engineering through aftermarket stages, thus enabling strong cross-selling revenue opportunities. Overall, management believes the tie-up can lead to an incremental 2% growth rate over what the companies would do independently. There's two key markets that each company would like to serve better as a result of the deal: natural gas and nuclear -- each of which are growing in importance because of the accelerating demand for clean electricity from AI data centers. As the following slide shows, Flowserve had only 2% of revenue coming from LNG before the merger, while LNG was a core business for Chart, at 15%. Meanwhile, Flowserve had a more significant exposure to nuclear plants, at 7% of trailing revenues, while Chart had 7% exposure to the nuclear, hydrogen, and helium markets combined. While the rest of Chart and Flowserve's end-markets are typically mid-single digit growth markets, with some a bit higher and some a bit lower, the nuclear and LNG end markets are forecast to realize double-digit growth over the medium term, thanks to surging AI demand. Aside from bolstering each company's growth prospects, the tie-up should also yield substantial cost savings. In conjunction with the merger, the companies projected $300 million in cost synergies, which they believe will be achieved over the next three years. It should be noted that Chart exceeded its projected synergy targets following its 2023 Howden acquisition by a fair amount, which means that $300 million synergy target may also be conservative. So look for the combined company to significantly lower costs and boost margins post-merger. On top of that, there's also a significant refinancing opportunity. Chart used a lot of debt to make the $4.4 billion Howden acquisition, and was still fairly leveraged as of this year. The Howden acquisition also occurred at a difficult time for the markets, so Chart's debt is at rather high and variable interest rates. However, combining with Flowserve will lower the combined company's overall leverage ratio to just 2.0 times EBITDA, which will enable an investment-grade credit rating. That means the companies, when combined, should be able to refinance Chart's debt at lower rates, leading to additional cost savings. Both Chart and Flowserve each appeared undervalued going into the merger as well. While it's usually not a good idea to "sell" or merge using stock when one's valuation is low, the fact that both stocks were trading cheaply lessens the negative effect of the stock-for-stock deal. In fact, I recently ran a screen of specialty industrial equipment companies with market caps above $2 billion, and Chart and Flowserve came up as the cheapest and fourth-cheapest of those 39 stocks on a forward P/E basis at just 10 and 13 times this year's earnings expectations, respectively. While Chart's low valuation may be due to its debt load, even on an enterprise value-to-EBITDA basis, with enterprise value factoring in the debt, the combined companies currently trade at just a 10 EV-to-EBITDA multiple. Many large-cap industrial conglomerates trade in a range of 15 to 20 times EBITDA. With strong positions in some key growth markets, like LNG and nuclear power, I wouldn't expect this discount to last. Thus, both companies appear to be rare bargain-priced stocks with exposure to AI growth -- and will be especially big bargains after the merger closes later this year.
