Couple Wanted To Give Rescue Dog a DNA Test—But He Had Other Plans
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A couple who were eager to have their rescue dog undergo a DNA test to find out what breed he is soon found out he was ready to play ball. Deanna knew from early on in her relationship that her girlfriend Savannah would love to get a dog, but finding the right one proved harder than anticipated. Then, one night, the perfect opportunity presented itself. "The local shelter had a 'clear the shelters month' where adoption fees were $25—that was our chance," Deanna told Newsweek. The search was far from straightforward, though. "We were looking online and looking, and we found some very cute pups, but none appeared to be 'Savannah's' dog," Deanna said. "We didn't have an idea at all; we just knew that we would know." From left: Ravioli stands at home; and sleeps on a couch. From left: Ravioli stands at home; and sleeps on a couch. Deanna Hennelly Then, one day, a dog by the name of "Winston" appeared on the website. "He was listed as a 8 week old, 2-pound Labrador mix. Yes, 2 pounds. But I thought he'd be tiny," Deanna said. After a protracted adoption process, the sweet puppy came home where he was quickly renamed Ravioli. "Savannah had lived in Italy for a bit, and this was meant to be her dog, so we wanted a silly food name," Deanna said. "Ravioli just seemed perfect for this goofy-eared man." Deanna and Savannah got creative, giving Ravioli a person modeled on Jersey Shore reality TV star DJ Paul D. "That's his dad, we joke," Deanna said. "He wears an Ed Hardy collar, eats out of a DJ table slow feeder, has his own crocadilly—it's his whole thing." Though they both joke Ravioli is a ladies man, the reality is he's much more likely to be a momma's boy than anything else. "He loves a cuddle and is sweeter and mushier than anything," Deanna said. But, while the couple were happy to create a distinct personality for Ravioli, they were eager to find out more about where he came from. Some of that comes down to Ravioli's unique attributes. "He's super lean and energetic, long limbed (a noodle), a sweet cuddly boy who sleeps curled into a ball, and hilariously expressive," Deanna said. "He will also throw his hands like a boxer. Apple photos identifies him as a greyhound, he was listed as a lab mix at the rescue." They decided to turn to a dog DNA test for answers. Pet DNA testing is a popular practice among pet owners eager to learn more about their animal companion. A 2023 report put together by the business consulting firm Grand View Research estimates the global pet DNA testing market is around $365.34 million. That figure is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 9.45 percent from 2024 to 2030. Given the wide availability of testing kits, it didn't take much for Deanna to get one for Ravioli. However, any plans she may have had for administering soon went out the window. "I was making pasta and realized we didn't have basil," Deanna said. "Luckily, I had a small grocery shop downstairs." In her haste to get dinner fixed, however, Deanna made a fateful mistake: Ravioli's crate was left open and, while she headed to the store, he set to work. "We come home, he walks up and greets us and we go, 'what?'" Deanna said. "Well, the apartment is a disaster; he has destroyed 3 stuffed animals, eaten a block of Parmesan, and completely ripped apart his DNA test kit." Ravioli the rescue dog playing dress-up. Ravioli the rescue dog playing dress-up. Deanna Hennelly That was two years ago, but it's a memory that has stayed with Deanna and Savannah. So much so that Deanna recently took to Reddit, posting under the handle u/ParsnipNo9680, to share the story of what happened when they tried to get Ravioli tested. The original plan had been to get a replacement test. Deanna said the company she purchased it from "said they sent me a new one" but it never arrived. "So honestly, I've kinda accepted it wasn't meant to be." Though she is resigned to never fully knowing the truth. Deanna posted Ravioli's story online, partly in the hope someone might help. "He doesn't want us to find out, but please secretly help us," she said. Anyone willing to assist, is urged to contact her via the Reddit post.

Dog's Adoption Goes Wrong—Tears at What She Still Does: 'Heart of Gold'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A rescue dog named Bonnie has been making waves online after she was returned to her foster home and whined constantly—sparking concern. Her carer, Amy Waddington (@amywaddington3), posted a TikTok clip showing the beige pooch sitting on the couch and letting out a steady cry. The footage has been liked almost 20,000 times and viewed over 256,000 times on the platform. In text overlay on the video, Waddington said: "Bonnie often seems unsettled. She makes this noise a lot. It's one of the reasons her adoption failed." Waddington later told followers that Bonnie had already played in the garden and had breakfast before the video was filmed. "I'm sat with her, but she seems so unsettled," she said. @amywaddington3 Bonnie is our foster dog from Romania. She was with us for a few weeks in Sept 2024 and then she was adopted for six months. The adoption didn't work out for a number of reasons and she's been back with us for six months now. Bonnie isn't the easiest of dogs but she does have a heart of gold under all the noise and bravado. She often whines when we are sitting and resting. She doesn't seem unhappy but she does seem restless. She's such a busy dog, I often wonder, can dogs have ADHD or is there a canine equivalent? We do play time with her, she has good walks, she's got three other dogs to play with and a heap of enrichment toys. We share lots of fun videos of Bonnie, I thought I'd share something a little different. Helpful and kind thoughts and advice is welcomed 🥰🙏🏻. #Bonnieandme #rescuedog #fyp #dogtraining #bekind ♬ Kitchen Fan Lullaby (Raw) - Claire Boyer Bonnie's journey has been far from straightforward. Waddington said that she is a foster dog from Romania who first stayed with them for a few weeks in September 2024. Bonnie was then adopted for six months, but the placement didn't work out, and she has now been back in Waddington's care for another half-year. "Bonnie isn't the easiest of dogs, but she does have a heart of gold under all the noise and bravado," Waddington said. "She often whines when we are sitting and resting. She doesn't seem unhappy but she does seem restless. She's such a busy dog … Helpful and kind thoughts and advice is welcomed." Amber Batteiger is an animal emergency services and disaster relief expert and PR and communications manager at Embrace Pet Insurance. She told Newsweek that excessive whining or crying is "very common" in newly adopted rescue dogs. Stock image: A brown dog rests on the couch. Stock image: A brown dog rests on the couch. Miguel Romero/iStock / Getty Images Plus She said that vocalization is "rarely just 'for attention'—it's a form of communication rooted in anxiety, uncertainty, confusion, or unmet needs." Batteiger said crying can be triggered by separation anxiety, adjustment stress, or physical discomfort, and, sometimes, it is simply the dog trying to make sense of their new environment. She advised pet parents to observe when the whining occurs—whether it is during transitions, when the dog is left alone, or alongside pacing and panting—which can indicate distress. If the whining is tied to being ignored or wanting interaction, then it may still be a sign of emotional insecurity. Batteiger added that canines thrive on structure and routine, recommending a predictable schedule and a safe space to decompress. Reinforcing calm behavior, practicing low-key arrivals and departures, and following the "3-3-3 rule"—three days to decompress, three weeks to learn the routine, and three months to feel at home—can help. "If the crying is persistent, intense, or accompanied by other signs of distress, like refusal to eat, destructive behavior, or self-injury, the pet parents need to talk to a veterinarian or behaviorist," Batteiger said. She added that rescue dogs may arrive with "emotional baggage" but also have "an incredible capacity to heal and to love deeply." The video sparked a wave of comments from TikTok users offering their experiences and theories. "Our borzoi boy also is a bit whiny and unsettled sometimes when we rest, especially in the evenings. Even when exercised well, fed and happy. We found out that we just need to howl with him for 5 minutes or so. We call them our evening 'complaints' so every evening the whole family howls together and he's happy after," one user wrote. "Maybe she is pining for another dog she was with in her previous country," another posted. "She might not be stimulated enough, I would definitely try and make some brain activities with her. Some dogs just need more stuff to do than others to settle all the way down. My dog does similar when he's bored or he wants to do stuff," said Christinna. "I think she doesn't know how to rest—it's trauma related, humans get it as well. Just be patient and try and have very set routine," Lou commented. Newsweek reached out to @amywaddington3 for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? Marvel's Best Movie of the Year is Coming to Streaming Soon
Whether you call them Thunderbolts or New Avengers, you can also call it home for dinner because one of the best, if not the best, Marvel movies of the year is headed to Disney+ later this month. Earlier today, Marvel announced Thunderbolts will make its way to the streaming platform on August 27. As noted in Marvel's press release hyping its streaming debut, its pilgrimage to the premiere destination for all things MCU comes after the film built up a surprising amount of momentum in its theatrical release, putting to rest all talk of superhero fatigue that has plagued the genre. Not only did the film round out with an 88 percent Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, but it also restored the feeling that Marvel was finally back in its groove in the messy wake of Captain America: Brave New World's release in February. A feat all the more daunting to clear, given the more grounded superhero film had the pressure of releasing before The Fantastic Four: First Steps and DC Studios' Superman, movies billed to be even bigger blockbusters that'd steal the limelight this summer. The film, which assembles characters from fringe Marvel projects like Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and The Falcon and Winter Soldier, sees Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) go from being collateral damage to humanity's last line of defense with the arrival of Sentry/the Void, AKA Bob (Lewis Pullman). In contrast to other films, which seem unable to tell a story without veering into catastrophic skybeams, Thunderbolts' tale looks inward with an interpersonal story about its heroes' struggle with their own mental health and imposter syndrome as they dare to punch above their weight and be genuine heroes. In io9's review, we said the Jake Schreier-directed film is Marvel back to doing what it does best, writing, 'When Marvel brings characters from multiple projects together on the big screen, it has an earned reputation and expectation to deliver massive spectacle. Thunderbolts isn't that. It's a film that has action, excitement, and one of the best end credit scenes in recent years, all while never losing its smaller, indie soul. The characters, like the movie, are underdogs. But one that, a few tiny blips aside, ends up a winner.' Thunderbolts releases on Disney+ on August 27. Want more io9 news?
