Chicago's success sets them up to be one of the most aggressive teams ahead of the trade deadline. While Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon have done a tremendous job holding down the fort after Justin Steele's season-ending injury, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is in pursuit of another starting pitcher. Keller, 29, may not be the marquee pitcher available at the deadline, but his track record proves he can strengthen Chicago's rotation and help push them to the playoffs. Since 2022, Keller has appeared in 110 games, totaling a 4.12 ERA and 587 strikeouts across 625.1 innings, while securing an All-Star nod in 2023. As Chicago struggles to find consistency behind their top three starters (Shota Imanaga, Taillon, and Boyd), Keller's performance this season can give them much-needed stability. Advertisement Despite having a league-leading 10 losses, Keller is on pace for his best season since 2022. Making all 16 of his scheduled starts, Keller has a 4.02 ERA, 73 strikeouts, and a 1.22 WHIP across 94 innings. Under contract through 2028, he would not only fill the Cubs' immediate need for a starter but also give sustainability to the backend of their rotation for the next three and half years. Although trading Keller within the division seems irresponsible by the Pirates, Nightengale says the team will have an 'operator standing by' taking calls near the deadline.
