'I think Texas A&M makes the playoff': SEC football analyst predicts Aggie CFP bid
Rusty Mansell, co-owner and publisher of DawgsHQ, joined Michael Bratton (SEC Mike) on "That SEC Podcast" to talk SEC football following a packed week in Atlanta, Georgia. With the league's annual preseason meetings concluding and fall camp set to kick off shortly, SEC Mike asked Mansell to provide the boldest take heading into the 2025 campaign.
Mansell's response? He believes that the Aggies are primed for a CFP bid this season, which would mark the program's first playoff appearance if those hopes come to fruition.
Here is the full clip from "That SEC Podcast" where Mansell and SEC Mike discussed Texas A&M's potential heading into the second year under head coach Mike Elko:
Whether the Aggies will reach the CFP will be determined by how the program handles one of the toughest schedules in the country. Ranked as the No. 9 slate by ESPN metrics, Texas A&M will have road tests against Notre Dame, LSU and Texas, all of which will have massive postseason implications.
Having a talented gunslinger at the helm will help the Aggies stay on course, however. Marcel Reed enters his sophomore year in College Station after throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 games played last season. The two-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree (Sep. 16 and Oct. 28) also recorded 547 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
With experience under his belt and targets like former ACC Freshman Offensive Player of the Year KC Concepcion surrounding him, Reed has all the pieces to complete the puzzle and lead the Aggies to the CFP in 2025.
While the Texas A&M secondary has been a weak spot of the defensive unit for a long time, that could soon change as well with the return of Will Lee III and the addition of transfer standouts Julian Humphrey (Georgia) and Jordan Shaw (Washington), rounding out the Aggie secondary this season.
Can the Aggies defy the odds and reach the 2025-2026 CFP? The Maroon and White faithful will have to wait just 41 more days before those answers begin to unfold on the gridiron at Kyle Field.

World's tallest teen, Florida basketball center Olivier Rioux gives football a try
They say that the sky is the limit when it comes to people pursuing greatness, but for Florida basketball's towering center Olivier Rioux, the higher altitudes are where he reigns. The 7-foot-9-inch native of Canada, who is designated as the world's tallest teenager by the Guinness Book of World Records, still has some work to do when it comes to getting court time for the Gators this coming season. But that did not stop him from taking an opportunity to work out with the football program recently. The team's special teams coaches geared Rioux up and gave him a few snaps during practice, hoping that his height and wingspan could prove to be an effective approach for blocking field goals and extra points. During a booster event on Thursday evening, coach Todd Golden seemed perfectly fine with him getting some reps on the gridiron. "I like the idea," he said. "I give them credit for trying it." However, the experiment was less than successful. Sure, Rioux is tall and long, but he is only able to achieve an 11-inch vertical leap with his 305-pound frame, which just does not cut it for that specific role. "They were a little disappointed," Golden offered. It sounds like he will stick to basketball... at least, for now. Rioux competed on behalf of Team Canada this summer in the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup, helping his team earn a 5-2 record while finishing fifth overall in the standings. In seven games played, the young Gator totaled 11 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and one assist while averaging a little over nine minutes per contest. The redshirt freshman is expected to see some playing time during Florida's defense of its national championship next season, but he will be limited by the team's depth in the front court. With Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, Micah Handlogten and Reuben Chinyelu all returning, Rioux will most likely be relegated to garbage time. SEC Network analyst thinks this Oklahoma wide receiver is primed for a breakout year
This time last year, everyone involved with Oklahoma Sooners football was raving about former Purdue wide receiver Deion Burks. He was so impressive in the spring of 2024 that he looked like he could be the best wideout in a loaded room in Norman. After a solid start to the season, Burks was injured in Week 4 against Tennessee and played in just one more game the rest of the year. He was added to the list of injured OU WRs and part of the reason the Sooners struggled so much on offense last year. Burks decided to come back for his final season at Oklahoma. If he can stay healthy this season, he has a chance to make good on all of the potential he showed in his first spring at OU. Appearing on "That SEC Podcast", SEC Network college football analyst Cole Cubelic identified three breakout candidates in the SEC for this upcoming season. Burks was among them, with Cubelic raving about what Burks could bring to the new offense in Norman. "Deion Burks at Oklahoma, if I said that name, how many people would know who that is?" Cubelic asked. "Dude can freaking go, and if he's healthy, he's a problem." It's still a bit of an unknown as to what exact role Burks will have in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's offense. However, Arbuckle probably likes that opponents don't know what to expect out of Burks in the new system. If Burks can stay healthy, develop chemistry with quarterback John Mateer, and Arbuckle can scheme up touches for the dynamic playmaker, Cubelic could be spot-on about Burks having a big year in 2025.
