Amanah Sabah gears up for state polls, eyes winnable seats
KOTA KINABALU (July 19): Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Sabah is determined to contest in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, focusing on securing winnable seats, said its chairman Datuk Lahirul Latigu.
'Our focus is clear, for Amanah to contest, we must secure winnable seats,' he said after the launch of Amanah Sabah's election machinery here on Saturday.
Lahirul said the final decision on candidates would lie with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition leadership, and emphasised the importance of loyalty and unity within the party.
'Being the candidate is not the main priority. Whoever is chosen, whether it is me or another candidate from PH component parties, we must all give our full support,' he said.
He acknowledged that the party faces challenges, especially with a smaller number of seats available compared to before, and said the final allocation will depend on ongoing negotiations, including possible talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
'For this election, although some call it a 'friendly contest', we will do our best to minimise clashes with other parties,' he said.
Meanwhile, Lahirul called on Amanah's grassroots to be fully prepared, noting that the party has grown steadily in Sabah over the past decade.
'Since establishing a presence in Sabah 10 years ago, Amanah has expanded to 18 areas in the state with about 15,000 members,' he said.
'We have been contesting since 2018, and despite the major challenges in the political landscape… this time, we must win.
He urged party machinery at all levels to go to the ground and strengthen their presence in targeted constituencies.

Anwar: More goods exempted under SST compared with GST
KUALA LUMPUR: More goods are exempted under the Sales and Service Tax (SST) compared with the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was abolished in 2018, says Finance Minister and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said following the review of rates and the expansion of the SST scope, 1,826 items were exempted under SST, compared with just 607 items previously exempted under GST. "The exemptions cover a wide range of basic necessities and commonly used items, including unprocessed or raw food such as chicken, beef, mutton, fish, vegetables, local fruits and rice. Processed foods such as flour, sugar, salt, white bread, milk and palm cooking oil are also exempted. "This also applies to medicines, medical devices and reading materials. In addition, SST exempts livestock and pet food, basic construction materials, fertilisers, pesticides, as well as agricultural and livestock machinery," he said in a parliamentary written reply. He was responding to Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH–Segamat), who asked about the number of goods exempted under SST in 2025 compared with GST, as well as the categories of exempted goods. Anwar said service tax was imposed on 70 per cent of services in the economy, compared to 76 per cent under GST, based on the Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification (MSIC) Codes. He added that a range of essential services remain exempt. These include passenger transport by land and sea such as school buses, express buses, LRT, trains and ferries as well as air passenger transport under Rural Air Services in Sabah and Sarawak. Prepaid telecommunications services are also exempt. Other services not subject to tax include food and beverage delivery, residential rental, residential cleaning and maintenance, water supply, electricity supply of up to 600 kWh for residential use, and electricity supply to business premises. "The government remains committed and cautious in implementing the expansion of SST. Its implementation is targeted and progressive, taking into account the impact on the cost of living. "More practical and comprehensive measures have also been introduced to reduce the effects of double taxation and mitigate living costs, while supporting sustainable economic growth. "The greater number of exempted goods and the lower percentage of taxable services under SST, compared with GST, reflect the government's concern for the people's welfare, while ensuring stronger fiscal sustainability in line with the principles of the Madani Economic Framework," he said.

Govt mulls special entry rules for non-citizen parents of Malaysian children
KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is drafting special consideration criteria for entry permits for non-citizen spouses with Malaysian children who have been separated from their Malaysian partners. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move aims to support family institutions and to ensure that non-citizen parents are not separated from their Malaysian citizen children. He said that under current regulations, if a marriage between a non-citizen and a Malaysian citizen ends, either through divorce or the death of the Malaysian spouse, the long-term social visit pass for the non-citizen is no longer valid. "For non-citizens married to Malaysian citizens, they are eligible for the long-term social visit pass to reside in Malaysia. With this pass, they may apply for an entry permit and subsequently submit a permanent resident application to the National Registration Department. "However, if the marriage ends, whether due to death or divorce, the long-term social visit pass will no longer be granted. The privilege of applying for an entry permit through the spouse-to-citizen pathway will also lapse automatically," he said in a parliamentary written reply. He was responding to Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari (PH–Sungai Petani), who asked about the status of non-citizen single mothers and fathers with Malaysian children who could not apply for permanent residency during their marriage due to stringent requirements but are now sole guardians of their Malaysian children. Saifuddin said three measures had been introduced to ease entry permit applications and reduce barriers for parents in such situations. He said that the ministry had cleared all 19,205 backlog applications dating from 2013 to 2023. Of these, 14,918 applications were from wives of Malaysian citizens and 4,287 from husbands. "The requirements for entry permit applications have also been refined. For wives of Malaysian citizens, applications can be made once the marriage has been registered for three years and the applicant has held a spouse pass for at least one year. "For husbands of Malaysian citizens, applications can be made once the marriage has been registered for five years and the applicant has held a spouse pass for five years," he said. He added that the ministry had introduced a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for entry permit applications, which sets a six-month processing and decision-making timeframe for complete applications.
