Indian Express30-04-2025

A report by global strategy consultant EY-Parthenon on the two-day concert by British rock band Coldplay has claimed that it created an 'economic impact' of Rs 641 crore across industries — of which Rs 392 crore was 'injected into Ahmedabad's local economy through spending on accommodation, restaurants, local transportation and shopping'.
The report titled 'India's Rising Concert Economy', made public Wednesday, finds that hotel room tariffs rose by three to six times 'within just two days of the announcement of the shows', while airline fares went up by '3-4 times'.
Coldplay performed in Ahmedabad 's Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26. The shows saw a record audience footfall of 2,22,000.
According to the report, 86% of the attendees were from outside of Ahmedabad, from across 28 states and Union Territories.
The report, which analysed inputs of a survey conducted by BookMyShow, an online ticket booking platform, stated that 47% of the 2,821 attendees stayed in Ahmedabad 'spending an average of Rs 12,401'. As per the findings, 50% of them spent more than one night in the city, while 23% spent more than Rs 15,000 on their stay. As per the report, almost while 40% stayed in hotels, almost as many stayed with 'friends or relatives' (39%), while 14% claimed they 'didn't stay anywhere'.
According to the report, the GST earned from those two days amounted to Rs 72 crore.
'Rooms that typically cost around INR15,000 even during peak season soared to INR50,000- 90,000 within just two days of the announcement of the shows at Ahmedabad. Several upscale hotels charged as much as INR1.60 lakh for a two-night stay, a rate hike that surpassed even New Year's Eve prices in some cases,' the report claimed, citing media reports.
The report, commissioned by BookMyShow, claimed that it was developed 'based on primary and secondary research, discussions with various companies and stakeholders, and cross-referencing of available data points'.
As per the report, airline fares from key cities to Ahmedabad, including short-haul destinations, 'experienced substantial hikes with one-way tickets being charged 3-4 times higher than the regular fare'.
The also report claimed that the concert in Ahmedabad 'boosted local commerce, with 38% of attendees engaging in local shopping, spending an average of INR2,253 per person. Notably, 71% of these shoppers were under 28 years old, highlighting how the concert introduced local artisans, handicrafts and culture to a younger, wider audience'.
Also, 15,000 were deployed for concert operations that included 4,500 police personnel, 400 student volunteers and 200 staff from various government and local authorities, the report showed. Among the Gujarat government arms, which assisted in the organisation of the concert were the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Gujarat Gas Ltd, the gas distribution company with Chief Secretary Pankaj Joshi as its chairman, and Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, the report added.

Who Is Nupur Sanon, Actor Kriti Sanon's Sister, And Why Her Clothing Brand Is Facing Criticism?

Last Updated: Kriti Sanon's sister Nupur Sanon launched Nobo in 2024. The brand is now under fire for selling "basic" outfits at sky-high prices. Nupur Sanon, best known as the younger sister of Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon, is facing social media heat over her recently launched clothing line Nobo. While Nupur made her entertainment debut through hit music videos like Filhall opposite Akshay Kumar and ventured into films with the Telugu movie Tiger Nageswara Rao in 2023, it's her foray into fashion that's currently making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Who Is Nupur Sanon? Nupur Sanon, a singer and actress, rose to fame with Filhall and its sequel Filhall 2 – Mohabbat. She is also known for her musical covers shared on social media. Although she has yet to make her Bollywood debut, her popularity continues to rise. Nupur is currently rumoured to be dating singer Stebin Ben, whose hits like Sahiba, Thoda Thoda Pyaar, and Rula Ke Gaya Ishq have gone viral. Why Is Nupur Sanon's Brand Facing Backlash? Launched in 2024, Nupur's label Nobo promises minimal, modern silhouettes that blend Indian and Western aesthetics. However, Reddit users and social media critics are calling out the brand for its steep pricing and 'unoriginal" designs. Critics have highlighted how the label is selling 'basic-looking" clothes for up to Rs 27,000, sparking debate on whether celebrity-backed brands are disconnected from their audiences. On the official website, the most expensive lehenga is a Banarasi design priced at Rs 21,000. In the Indian wear section, the costliest suit set is listed at Rs 26,500, while the most affordable item costs Rs 7,700. Western wear includes a skirt and crop top set that retails at Rs 20,000, and the cheapest product is a pair of shorts priced at Rs 2,400. Reddit threads filled up with mocking commentary. One user wrote, 'No Bo is short for 'Nobody Bought it.'" Another quipped, 'These are the ugliest clothes I've ever seen, good lord." A third post sarcastically read, 'I think her brand name is incomplete cause she clearly forgot to write Label NoboDY IS BUYING THIS OVERPRICED FAST FASHION SHIT FROM ME." Despite the backlash, Nobo has been endorsed by several celebrities including Kriti Sanon herself, Uorfi Javed, Sanjana Sanghi and influencer Rida Tharana. First Published: June 16, 2025, 21:30 IST

Over 100 bike taxis seized in Bengaluru for operating despite Karnataka HC order

Officials of the road transport offices across Bengaluru seized 103 bike taxis on Monday for operating despite the Karnataka High Court's directive to suspend operations in the state. The transport department officials have also booked the riders of the 103 bike taxis across RTO divisions in the central, west, south, north, east, Electronic City, and KR Puram, among others. According to RTO officials, the riders were fined Rs 5,000 for operating bike taxis without permission and additionally for insufficient documentation. 'We have seized their vehicles and fined them for operating without permission, in line with the high court's directive. Following the payment of the fine amount, we will release the vehicle after two days,' said an RTO official. The crackdown comes after the high court on April 2 ordered all bike taxi operators, including Rapido, Uber and Ola, to suspend their operations, pending the formation of rules under section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act by the state government. The deadline to wind down operation is Monday (June 16), set after the aggregators sought additional four weeks, modifying a single-bench order that had granted them six weeks to suspend operations. The ban came after a division bench of the high court refused to stay the April 2 single-bench order that directed all bike taxi operators to suspend operations within six weeks. Acting Chief Justice Kameswar Rao observed that an interim relief could have been given to aggregators, provided the state government considered drafting a bike taxi policy. 'However, in this case, the state government has clearly made a policy decision (of not being interested to frame a bike taxi policy),' he noted. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has emphasised that the state government is not inclined towards drafting a bike taxi policy and that white-board two wheelers cannot be used for commercial purposes. However, Rapido and Uber continued to offer courier services through bikes, which eventually also drew criticism. Bangalore Central MP P C Mohan wrote on X, 'Karnataka High Court has banned bike taxis. But aggregators continue to operate under the guise of 'Bike Parcel'. Citizens are now being reduced to mere parcels in this legal evasion. Karnataka Government has failed to implement the law. Are aggregators above the law?' He added, 'This isn't about supporting or opposing bike taxis. It's about upholding the law. No aggregator can flout Karnataka High Court orders under the guise of 'Bike Parcel' or 'Moto Courier'. This is not innovation, it is contempt of court and a challenge to judicial authority.' Meanwhile, all three major aggregator platforms–Rapido, Uber and Ola–removed the bike taxi feature from their apps on Monday, in line with the high court's order. Uber's spokesperson said in a press statement, 'Uber has taken the difficult decision to suspend bike taxi operations in Karnataka from June 16 following an order from the Hon'ble High Court. This will negatively impact the many thousands of riders who rely on bike taxis for their daily mobility needs, as well as the many thousands of drivers who rely on the service for their livelihood. We will continue engaging with the Government of Karnataka to help shape a progressive policy framework that enables safe, accessible, and affordable mobility options for everyone.' In a notification to its customers, Rapido said on the app, 'Starting June 16, 2025, our Bike Taxi services in Karnataka will be paused in compliance with recent High Court orders. While we deeply believe in the value bike taxis bring to daily commuters, we respect the law and will fully abide by the directive. We remain committed to the communities we serve and hopeful for a future where convenient, affordable mobility is accessible to all. We are navigating the way forward with the government to bring your favourite bike taxis back on the road soon.' Bike taxi associations also gave a representation to BJP MLA Ravi Subramanya seeking urgent relief from the suspension of bike taxis. The drivers demanded clear rules on licensing, insurance, and safety rather than being criminalised overnight. 'We're part of the same informal economy that Karnataka claims to support. Why are we being shut out without a conversation?' asked Mohammed Salim, president of the Namma Bike Taxi Association. Meanwhile, Shaik Salauddin, National General Secretary of the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU), and Inayath Ali, president of the Karnataka App-Based Workers' Union, have welcomed the high court's decision declining a stay on the single-judge order that held bike taxis cannot operate in the state unless relevant rules are framed. Shaik Salauddin said, 'We appreciate the Karnataka High Court's order. It underscores the necessity for a clear legal framework for bike taxis and highlights the ongoing violation of regulations by companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. These companies have been cheating workers by ignoring the rules and putting their livelihoods at risk.' Salauddin demanded strict action against the aggregator companies for non-compliance and called on the transport department to promptly issue clear guidelines and conduct special camps to convert private two-wheelers into commercial vehicles. 'This will help workers operate legally and safeguard their income and future,' he said. Inayath Ali said, 'We welcome this order as it protects the livelihoods of cab and auto drivers who lose their income due to unfair competition. If bike taxis are allowed in future, they should be permitted only with yellow number plate (commercial vehicle) registration and proper oversight by the authorities.'
