ED an ‘extended dept.' of BJP, says Baby

The Hindu27-05-2025

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has now become an 'extended department' of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby has alleged.
He was addressing a reception accorded to him by the CPI(M) Kozhikode district committee here on Tuesday. Mr. Baby's comments come against the backdrop of the Central agency arraigning the CPI(M), and party leaders K. Radhakrishnan, MP, A.C. Moideen, and M.M. Varghese, among others, as the accused in the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank loan scam.
Mr. Baby claimed that the agency was being used by the Union government and the BJP to threaten and antagonise political parties, leaders, and governments that refuse to toe the line of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. 'Those who don't fall in line are heinously suppressed and portrayed as culprits. Fabricated allegations are being levelled against them,' he said.
Mr. Baby pointed out that the ED's case filed against the CPI(M) and its leaders was politically motivated and was an attempt to target the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in the State. 'Just because the bank is located in Thrissur district and these leaders are from there, they are being implicated. They are not at all responsible or linked with the scam in the bank,' he claimed. Mr. Baby said that the various agencies of the State government had already been investigating the case. Steps were also being taken to return money to the investors, he said.
The CPI(M) leader also criticised a section of the media for publishing factually incorrect news reports against the party. He said that a prominent Malayalam newspaper had given a report saying that a private construction company involved in the construction of national highways in the State had donated electoral bonds to the CPI(M) even though the party was among those who filed pleas against such financial transactions in the Supreme Court.
Mr. Baby pointed out that the effort was to target the CPI(M) and the LDF government for the recent caving in and developing of cracks on some parts of the national highway. Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas, Kozhikode Mayor Beena Philip, and CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretary M. Mehboob, among others, were present.

Revanth meets Rahul, Kharge in Delhi as AICC weighs portfolio reshuffle, cabinet strategy

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy met with AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss the allocation of portfolios to the three newly-inducted ministers and the possibility of a wider cabinet reshuffle. The Congress high command is said to have firmly advised Revanth to ensure social justice remains the guiding principle in the reallocation of portfolios—a directive with both symbolic and political resonance. Significantly, soon after the meeting, the AICC summoned senior minister and party heavyweight N Uttam Kumar Reddy to the national capital, fuelling speculation about a deeper shake-up within the cabinet. While there has been no official word on whether the leadership is contemplating dropping any ministers, the move has revived buzz in party circles about possible exits or marginalisation of underperforming incumbents. Uttam was accompanied by his wife and Kodad MLA N Padmavathi Reddy, whose name is reportedly under consideration either for inclusion in a future cabinet expansion or as one of the four working presidents of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This development is being seen as part of a larger balancing act within the party, aimed at accommodating key social and regional stakeholders ahead of local body elections. Bhatti also set to be called Though deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka was not present in Delhi, sources confirmed that a senior AICC leader held telephonic discussions with him following Revanth's meeting with the top leadership. There are strong indications that Bhatti too may be called to Delhi for further consultations, although his office did not confirm any such move as of late Tuesday night. "The high command has wrapped up discussions with the Karnataka leadership, where a decision was taken to conduct another caste census. The focus now shifts to Telangana," a senior AICC functionary said. "The leadership is set to deliberate not only on the portfolios for the new ministers but also the political ramifications of a larger reshuffle. Consultations with Revanth, Uttam, and most likely Bhatti will continue into the night or take place on Wednesday. The announcement of new portfolios is expected on Wednesday or Thursday," the source added. 4 working presidents Revanth's meeting with Rahul Gandhi and Kharge lasted over two hours and went beyond cabinet matters. The discussion also covered the pending appointments of four TPCC working presidents, district and block-level Congress presidents, the campaign committee, and the AICC programme implementation committee chairperson. The strategy for upcoming local body elections and plans to target the BJP-led Centre's '11 years of failure' were also prominently discussed. Sources said that AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal had submitted a detailed chart of portfolios currently held by Revanth, Bhatti, Uttam, and other ministers to Rahul Gandhi and Kharge. Also tabled was a performance report prepared by AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, which included candid feedback from party MLAs and senior leaders—reportedly touching on both strengths and lapses in the current cabinet. Revanth also extended formal invitations to Rahul Gandhi and Kharge to address public meetings in Telangana highlighting the successful completion of the state's caste survey, the passage of the 42% BC quota legislation, and the party's commitment to SC categorisation. Dates are being finalised in coordination with the central leadership, around which the TPCC will organise major rallies. Vivek meets Kharge, CM Meanwhile, newly-inducted minister G Vivek Venkatswamy also met Kharge on Monday and Revanth on Tuesday. While Vivek maintained publicly that he would work diligently with whichever portfolio he is given, sources indicate he is lobbying for the energy or education portfolio. He was reportedly advised by the leadership to concentrate on strengthening the party in the run-up to the local polls and to aggressively campaign against the BJP's record at the Centre.

Police question Angadias in illegal call centre case

1 2 3 Pune: The Pune city police have questioned Angadias, who ferry cash between Pune-Ahmedabad and Pune-Jaipur, in connection with the transfer of money to the illegal call centre in Kharadi that extorted millions of dollars from American citizens by posing as US law enforcement officials. However, the police are yet to trace the main cash peddler in the case. Police have now focused attention on the person who converted cryptocurrencies to cash or transferred money to the accounts of the call centre operators. On the intervening night of May 23 and 24, a police team raided the illegal call centre facility in Kharadi and found 123 people, including 12 women, on the premises. Investigations revealed that the call centre executives — numbering 118 — threatened US citizens with digital arrest in fake cases of narcotics or other fraud by posing as US law enforcement officials and extorted millions of dollars from them. They accepted online gift vouchers and cryptocurrencies. Additional commissioner of police (crime) Pankaj Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nikhil Pingale, and inspector Ajay Waghmare have questioned the Angadias. Pingale said, "The company, which runs the illegal call centre, has been officially registered in Jaipur. The three main suspects are on the run, and our teams are trying to locate them." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thuisbatterij in 2025: wat huiseigenaren niet weten Zonnepaneel Experts Meer lezen Undo Five people — Sarjitsingh Girawatsingh Shekhawat (26), Abhishekh Ajaykumar Pande (29), Shrimay Paresh Shah (31), Laxman Amarsingh Shekhawat (28), and Aron Arumugan Christian (29) -- all residing in Kharadi for about a year, were arrested on May 24. Assets of state political party chiefs should be probed: Jakhar

Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday demanded 'income trail test' of state presidents of all political parties, to ascertain the illegal wealth of mainstream leaders. Replying to a question over Punjab finance minister Harpal Cheema's statement seeking dope tests of all political leaders, Jhakhar said their assets should be probed as well. 'There are state presidents who had mud houses till a few years ago but are now roaming in (Land Rover) Defender cars worth 2.5 crore. What formula they have used to accumulate such wealth and properties, people must know. The income tax (department) can start the probe from me,' said Jakhar. He was addressing a press conference regarding the completion of 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre. Jakhar also took potshots at Congress leaders, who he said recently constructed farmhouses in Siswan area in New Chandigarh. 'You will be surprised to know that Captain Amarinder Singh has built a farmhouse in just four acres but some of our old friends from the Congress have built farmhouses across 10 acres. More surprising is that they have spent huge money on boundary walls, which are of more height than any central jail,' the BJP leader said. Taking jibe at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab over 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', the state BJP chief said this drive is a 'sham' as only small consumers were being put behind bars. Jakhar gave out data about such campaigns run in the previous Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP state governments to show how they resulted in significant arrests but failed eventually. Jakhar said that the BJP, under PM Modi, has ushered the country in a period of unprecedented growth for the country. 'India has become the fourth largest economy in the world. This is no coincidence but commitment to work on policies and principles,' said Jakhar.
