In her maiden Independence Day speech , chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday outlined her government's progress in the first six months and pledged to rejuvenate the Yamuna river, provide the country's best infrastructure in Delhi, open Atal canteens offering meals at Rs 5 to the needy, and set up a welfare board for gig workers.In her first appearance as chief minister at Delhi's Independence Day function, Gupta hoisted the tricolor at the Chhatrasal Stadium and presented the President's Correctional Service Medal to three prison officials.Amid heavy downpour, Gupta, in her address, called herself the "mukhya sevika" of Delhi and asserted that the BJP government will work to free the city from filth, corruption, and red tape.The chief minister presented her government's roadmap for a cleaner, greener, and more developed Delhi, highlighting key initiatives in infrastructure, housing, education, sports, youth welfare, and healthcare."As we move towards 100 years of freedom, our pledge is to take every street, every neighbourhood, and every citizen's life to new heights," she statedEmphasising that she did not want to make any big promises or announcements, Gupta said her endeavours were directed towards what the common people in Delhi aspired for - a better life.She paid tribute to the nation's freedom fighters and hailed the armed forces for the success of Operation Sindoor. Veteran freedom fighter and a member of the Indian National Army (INA), Rangaswamy Madhavan Pillai, 99, was felicitated by Gupta at the function.Calling Delhi the heart of the country and the Yamuna river the "soul" of the city, the chief minister noted that the BJP government was working for the national capital's rejuvenation through multiple interventions."I don't just promise but pledge to rejuvenate the Yamuna. Several promises were made in the past to clean the Yamuna, but little was achieved," she said.Gupta assured that the Yamuna will be clean enough for citizens to see the sun's reflection in its waters, and people will feel happy to perform veneration on its banks.Announcing that her government is going to open Atal canteens on the birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Gupta stated that meals will be provided to the needy for Rs 5, including daily wagers and workers in the city.She assured welfare steps for the poor and stated that her government will come up with a welfare board for the gig workers in the city.The chief minister also highlighted her government's efforts to provide permanent houses to slum dwellers of the city.Noting that her government was working to repair the city's roads, which had been in a state of neglect, Gupta added that the issue of waterlogging during rains was being addressed through the desilting of drains, among other measures.She claimed that this year, rainwater drained off rapidly from the roads and highways due to the efforts of the last six months.The BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years, winning the assembly polls held in February this year. Gupta, along with her cabinet ministers, took the oath as chief minister on February 20.Assuring that Delhi would soon be the city of dreams, she asserted that the BJP government was committed to providing Delhi with the best infrastructure in the country.Highlighting the achievements of her government, Gupta said the Delhi Assembly recently passed a bill to regulate fees of private schools, and her government will ensure that parents don't face financial burdens due to arbitrary fee hikes.Gupta informed that five major hospital expansion projects will be inaugurated in August, adding 1,300 new beds, modern OPDs, and advanced medical equipment to the healthcare infrastructure. Furthermore, 28 hospitals have been assigned new medical superintendents, and 1,500 nurses have been given permanent appointments, she said.Her government aims to set up 1,100 arogya mandirs (wellness centres), of which 166 have already been completed, she said.The chief minister emphasised that her government had promised to provide the highest rewards to medal winners in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games."For the first time, we will ensure job security for the youth who contribute to the growth and development of sports in Delhi," she added.Gupta said that, with the support of the Central government, nearly 400 kilometres of Metro network have been completed, carrying 50 lakh passengers daily, and new Metro lines are being rapidly constructed.The chief minister concluded her address, saying she had more to convey but had to wrap up for the sake of the children getting drenched in the stadium.Later, she went out onto the stadium ground to meet and greet the marching contingents amid the rain without an umbrella, and interacted with schoolchildren as well as personnel from the Delhi Police and Fire Services.

Earlier, on Friday, Delhi Police registered four FIRs in connection with the protest held without prior permission on August 11 and 12 in New Delhi, reported ANI. According to the police, demonstrations were organised despite prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of BNS (formerly known as Section 144), which was in force due to the security measures ahead of Independence Day. "Those who refused to leave the protest sites despite repeated requests were detained. Legal action will be taken against all those found violating the law," the Delhi Police said. Protests have been ongoing since August 11, when the Supreme Court directed authorities to ensure that all localities in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad are free of stray dogs. The court had ruled that captured animals should not be released back onto the streets. Following this, a three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria reserved its order on petitions seeking a stay on the directive. The bench said it would pass an interim order after hearing arguments from all sides. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing from the side of the Delhi government, said that there is a 'loud vocal minority' opposing the order, while the 'silent suffering majority' are supporting it. He said that people eat chicken and then claim to be animal lovers. He said that children were dying and sterilisation did not stop rabies, 'even if you immunised them, that did not stop mutilation of children," Mehta added further. Meanwhile, Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the NGO, questioned whether municipal authorities had created enough shelter homes for the dogs. "Now, dogs are picked up. But the order says once they are sterilised, do not leave them out in the community," he argued, seeking a stay on the August 11 order. The bench observed that the core problem was the failure of local bodies to implement the Animal Birth Control Rules. Justice Nath remarked, "Rules and laws are framed by the Parliament, but they are not followed. Local authorities are not doing what they should be doing.' In a detailed order, the court clarifies that the August 11 decision was not taken on a "momentary impulse" but after two decades of authorities failing to address a matter directly affecting public safety.

Kesavan also alleged that while Congress and its ally RJD speak of protecting "one person, one vote", their true agenda is centred on promoting "one family and one dynastic rule". The 16-day yatra will cover a distance of 1,300 kilometres, with scheduled breaks of one day each on three occasions (August 20, 25 and 31). Rahul Gandhi will be accompanied by Mahagathbandhan leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav and representatives from Left parties. The journey will be conducted in a hybrid mode, following the footsteps of Rahul Gandhi's earlier Bharat Jodo Yatras, with the first being on foot and the second in a hybrid format. The yatra will culminate on September 1 at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna with a large rally attended by key INDIA alliance leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, and Lalu Prasad Yadav, marking the formal launch of the Bihar assembly election campaign.

With days to go for nominations for the vice-presidential election to close, the BJP-led NDA has 'more or less zeroed in' on Jagdeep Dhankhar's successor ahead of the party's Parliamentary Board meeting, scheduled for Sunday evening. According to sources, the 11- member Parliamentary Board – the BJP's highest decision-making body – chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will grant approval to the NDA's pick. The vice-presidential polls have been necessitated after Dhankhar, in a 'surprise' move on July 21, tendered his resignation citing health reasons amid the Monsoon Session. An insider said that following the meeting, the BJP's decision is then likely to be conveyed to NDA partners like Nitish Kumar's JD(U), the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by N Chandrababu Naidu and others. In line with the alliance's showcase of 'significant unity' in the vice-presidential polls, the NDA last week had authorised Modi and BJP president J P Nadda to take a call on the alliance's pick for the polls. 'During the Parliamentary Board meeting, senior leaders typically discuss the merits of various candidates. It concluded with the PM giving his final nod on the matter. For the vice-presidential polls, the party has screened several contenders, including sitting Governors and Lieutenant Governors as well outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs. However, the alliance is also considering the polls as an opportunity to display its unity,' a source said. 'During the filing of the nomination and on polling day, the NDA will make it a point to publicly project a united and consolidated front,' a senior BJP leader said. Even as the NDA's Parliamentary Party will meet on Tuesday over the issue, a three-day workshop has been organised for MPs to give them procedural training for the September 9 polls. Sources said that the core agenda of the NDA's meeting was to finalise the vice-presidential candidate, discussions on the 70 Rajya Sabha vacancies scheduled to arise in 2026, the ongoing gubernatorial reshuffle, Cabinet rejig and the appointment of the new BJP national president could also be on the table.
