Pakistan, US finalising trade deal, Kayani tells Bloomberg

Business Recorder15 hours ago
Pakistan and US officials are currently in discussions to finalise the finer details of a trade deal that includes investments after securing the lowest tariff among major South Asian nations, Bloomberg reported on Monday.
Pakistan's revised tariff rate of 19% is lower than that of several regional economies, including India (25%), Bangladesh (20%), Vietnam (20%), and Sri Lanka (20%).
Bilal Azhar Kayani told Bloomberg TV in an interview that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government aims to secure a better tariff on certain exports during the ongoing talks with the US.
'The agreement with more details will be negotiated and discussed in the months ahead,' Kayani said.
The South Asian nation reached a trade deal last month with a 19% tariff – significantly lower than the initially proposed 29%, under a sweeping new executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The two nations have seen an improvement in relations recently with Trump also hosting Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir for rare talks at the White House, who is on a second trip to the US within a few months.
President Donald Trump, while announcing the trade deal, said the US will work with Pakistan on developing 'their massive oil reserves' and its in the process of choosing an oil company to lead the partnership.
The news of the deal came on the same day that Trump launched an unprecedented tariff attack against India - threatening tariffs of 25% - which were later increased to 50% - among the highest on any US trading partner, unless India stops buying Russian oil and weapons.
In India, Trump's tariffs spark calls to boycott American goods
Trump has threatened higher tariffs on Russia and secondary sanctions on its allies, if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not move to end the war in Ukraine, and threatened to sanction both Russia and its allies.
He even expressed dissatisfaction with India's participation in the 'anti-US' BRICS grouping.
Their relations worsened as an Indian government source said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit China for the first time in over seven years later this month.
During the announcement of oil reserves, Trump added how Pakistan 'may be selling oil to India one day.'

Indian shares gain ahead of US-Russia talks

MUMBAI: India's equity benchmarks started the week on a positive note, led by post-earnings gains in State Bank of India and Tata Motors, and as investors picked up stocks after six consecutive weeks of losses as they awaited US-Russia talks. The Nifty 50 rose 0.91 percent to 24,585.05 points and the BSE Sensex gained 0.93 percent to 80,604.08 on Monday. The Nifty and Sensex shed nearly 1 percent last week, posting their longest weekly losing streak in five years, as US tariffs and muted earnings weighed. Reliance Industries, which has benefited from cheaper Russian oil imports, rose 1.4 percent. The stock fell nearly 2 percent last week. 'We are definitely seeing some bargain buying today after losses seen in the last few weeks. There is some positivity on the back of scheduled US-Russia talks. But it needs to be seen what comes out of those talks,' said Aamar Deo Singh, senior vice president at Angel One. Fifteen of the 16 major sectors logged gains. Public sector banks were the biggest gainers with a 2.2 percent climb, led by a 2.4 percent rise in State Bank of India. The country's largest lender by assets posted higher profit, driven by stronger treasury income and curtailed spending.

China, HK stocks edge higher ahead of tariff deadline

HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong stocks rose on Monday as investors focussed on US-China trade truce developments, while shrugging off weekend data that highlighted persistent deflationary pressures in the world's second-largest economy. At market close, the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.3 percent to 3,647.55, the highest such close since Dec 16, 2021. The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 0.4 percent. Market participants widely expect another extension of the August 12 trade truce deadline following earlier talks in Stockholm. Analysts at Caitong Securities said in a note that the trade negotiations will likely result in an extension of reciprocal tariffs, and until US President Donald Trump's potential visit to China, the impact of US-China relations on A-shares could remain limited. However, fresh data showed factory-gate prices falling more than forecast as deflationary pressures persist across the Chinese economy, weighing on the sentiment. Leading gains onshore on Monday, the liquor sector jumped 2.5 percent, and AI-related stocks added 1.8 percent. Shares of lithium maker Tianqi and Ganfeng surged to near the 10 percent daily trading limits, after battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) said it had suspended production at a major lithium mine. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was up 0.2 percent at 24,906.81. The Tech index was flat, while Hang Seng Automobile Index rallied 1.9 percent. Investors are also awaiting earnings reports from market heavyweights later this week, including Tencent Meituan, and Alibaba. Around the region, MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index was firmer by 0.30 percent while Japan's Nikkei index was up 1.9 percent.
