How Mitchell Starc's spell to Sachin Tendulkar showed he was destined for greatness

India Today18-07-2025
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has revealed how a fiery spell bowled by a young Mitchell Starc to Sachin Tendulkar early in his Test career convinced the team that the left-arm quick was destined for greatness.Speaking on The ICC Review with Sanjana Ganesan, Ponting recalled a specific moment during Starc's third Test match - against India in Perth - when the then 21-year-old pacer made the cricketing world sit up and take notice.advertisement"I remember he was bowling a spell to Sachin Tendulkar and was able to bowl a short one, get up under Sachin's armpit and Sachin just sort of knocked one into short leg," Ponting said. "When you could see that sort of pace and bounce and have someone like Sachin not be able to cope with it, I think that was the reassurance for all of us that there was probably something extra special there for Mitchell Starc."
Starc had made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 2009 at the age of 19, and earned his Baggy Green within two years - a rapid rise that hinted at his rare potential. Sixteen years and 292 international matches later, Starc has not only lived up to that early promise but firmly established himself as one of the premier fast bowlers to play 100 Test matches."He's really now stacking up an amazing career - over 400 Test match wickets," Ponting noted. "I think everyone who laid eyes on him as a youngster understood that there was every possibility he could be a 100-Test match, 400 or 500-wicket fast bowler for Australia."He's got to be 6'5". He's always had pace on his side - consistently bowling in the high 140s, even touching 150 km/h. He's always had the ability to swing the new ball back into the right-handers."Ponting also highlighted the longevity of Starc's career, crediting the fast bowler for making disciplined decisions that prioritised international cricket - including opting out of the Indian Premier League at various points to manage his workload."He's made a lot of decisions to give himself the best opportunity for a long-term international career," Ponting said. "He's stepped away from IPL tournaments when bigger commitments with Australia were on the horizon."Beyond raw pace, it's Starc's evolution that has impressed Ponting most. In recent years, the 35-year-old has added subtle variations to his bowling - including a three-quarter seam delivery that has made his trademark inswinger more threatening and his overall repertoire more versatile."He's got better and better," Ponting said. "Skill-wise and mentally, I think he understands his body, understands his game probably better than ever."advertisementPonting also pointed to the small, personal routines Starc has adopted to maintain his mental focus - including a strip of tape on his non-bowling wrist with motivational words as a constant reminder of his mindset and approach."He wears a bit of tape on his right wrist. He's just got a couple of words on it - reminders of what he has to do and how he has to think about it mentally," Ponting said. "Those little things, I think, are things you learn along the way with experience."Despite niggles that come with the territory of fast bowling, Starc continues to push through - a reflection of his resilience and dedication to the national team."He's physically going along as well as ever. He's always had those little niggles like all fast bowlers do, but he finds a way to push through them. He plays games out with niggles, and that's why he's standing there now with over 400 Test wickets to his name."Starc's international rsum is among the most decorated in the modern game - a two-time ODI World Cup winner, T20 World Cup champion, World Test Championship winner, and a man with 725 wickets across formats.- Ends

Not Pitch. Real Reason Behind Gautam Gambhir's Spat With Oval Curator Revealed: "He Shouted..."

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak spilt the beans about head coach Gautam Gambhir's fiery confrontation with Lee Fortis, chief curator at The Oval, during the training session on Tuesday and declared that they did nothing wrong, which would have damaged the strip and confirmed they won't lodge any comment. The on-field verbal spats between the players extended to the off-field drama. Gambhir, visibly upset, was involved in a heated exchange with Fortis. The Indian head coach, on several occasions, pointed his finger at Fortis and even threw a couple of expletives. Kotak was seen stepping in, taking Lee away and having a brief conversation with him. While Kotak appeared to diffuse the situation while explaining their stance, Gambhir, who stood near the nets, pointed his finger towards Lee and furiously said, "You don't tell us what to do." According to ESPNcricinfo, Lee was unhappy with India using he majority of the main square for their training session. The Indian batting coach feels that pitch curators are "overprotective" and "possessive" about the square and the ground, but there is no need to be "arrogant" about something that is not an "antique piece". "When we were looking at the pitch. They had sent a man to send a message for us to stay 2.5 m away from the pitch. This was a little surprising. We were wearing joggers. It was quite awkward. We know curators are a little overprotective and possessive about the square and the ground. What he said about the head coach is his opinion, and I don't want to comment," Kotak told reporters in the post-match press conference. "There is nothing wrong with looking at a wicket wearing rubber spikes. Curators need to understand that the people they're talking to are highly skilled and intelligent. When you are working with highly skilled and intelligent people, if you sound a bit arrogant or if you come across like you know you can be protective, but at the end of the day, it's a cricket pitch, it's not some antique piece that you cannot touch because it is 200 years old and it will be broken," he added. He went on to claim that Lee was shouting when the support staff was bringing the cooling box, which weighed around 10 kilos. The way Lee addressed the staff members didn't sit well with Gambhir, prompting him to confront the chief curator while defending his teammates, something he has done before with the Naveen-ul-Haq incident in the IPL being one of them. "No, when he was bringing the cooling box there, he was sitting on the roller, he shouted and told the support staff not to take it there. Now the weight of that cooling box will be 10 kilos, according to me. It will not be more than that. And what we are doing there," he said. "So, it is good to be a little possessive, and it is also good to be protective, but not that much. So, then Gautam just said that do not talk to the support staff like this, because the support staff, we all come under the head coach. Any head coach will say that you cannot shout from there and say this," he added. Kotak claimed that the build-up to the incident began when they were inspecting the crease and were told to stand 2.5 meters away from the crease. Despite the fiasco, he confirmed that India won't push for a complaint against Lee. "So, it was very normal. Then he came there, and he was saying, I think it got built up from the wicket when we were watching. And to be very, very honest, if you want me to be very honest, before coming to Oval, most of the team knows that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with. And I am sure you also would be aware of it. So, that gives a lot of answers. No, I do not think there is any point in complaining," he said. "I felt when we were looking at the wicket, when the coaches stood near it, he (Fortis) sent someone who told us to stay 2.5 meters away from the pitch. But it was a very strange way of saying you go and stand two and a half metres away from here. So, I think that is what started because Gautam is someone who does not even speak unnecessary things. He does not talk to anyone," he added. While Kotak gave a detailed explanation of the situation, Lee refrained from commenting on the heated exchange. While speaking to the reporters, he classified Gambhir as a "touchy guy" and remained tight-lipped about the rest of the matter. "It is quite a big game coming up. It is not my job to be happy with him (Gautam Gambhir) or not. I have never met him before today. You saw what he was like this morning. It's okay, I am fine. We have nothing to hide," he said while speaking to reporters. As the gruelling Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy heads towards the final Test at The Oval, England are in a 2-1 lead after the fourth contest in Manchester ended in a draw. India will look to return home on a high, as the highly anticipated fixture begins on Thursday.

Chandrakant Pandit steps down as Kolkata Knight Riders head coach, franchise thanks him for 2024 title

"Mr. Chandrakant Pandit has decided to explore new opportunities and will not continue as Head Coach of Kolkata Knight Riders," KKR said in a post shared on 'X'. "We are thankful for his invaluable contributions — including leading KKR to the IPL Championship in 2024 and helping build a strong, resilient squad. His leadership and discipline have left a lasting impact on the team. We wish him all the very best for the future." Live Events — KKRiders (@KKRiders) Pandit is a respected figure in the Indian domestic circuits. He was appointed as the team's head coach ahead of the 2023 season. His first year in charge saw the team finish seventh, with regular skipper Shreyas Iyer missing the season due to injury. KKR bounced back in 2024 as Iyer returned to lead the side and franchise legend Gautam Gambhir rejoined the camp as mentor. In the successful, KKR not only clinched the title but also registered the highest points tally and best net run rate (NRR) in their IPL history. However, the momentum fizzled out in 2025 as a poor run following the mega auction saw KKR win just five of their 14 league matches, crashing out of playoff contention with two games to spare.
