Akash Deep's send-off for Ben Duckett raises eyebrows: ‘Not sure if this is the right way…'

Akash Deep ended a rampaging opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley by dismissing the latter but it is what he did after that which became a talking point on Day 2 of the fifth Test between India and England. Deep punched the air after getting Duckett caught behind before putting his arm around the batter's shoulder and walking a few steps with him. They also seemed to briefly exchange a few words in those seconds before KL Rahul pulled Deep away. Umpire Ahsan Raza also had a word with Deep after that. It was the last ball of the over and Shardul Thakur could be seen having a chat with Deep while he was fielding at the boundary the next over. On-air commentators Mike Atherton and Dinesh Karthik both seemed to not really approve Deep's behaviour. 'Given Duckett a bit of a send off which is probably unneccessary but it is the wicket that India desperately wanted,' said Atherton. Dinesh Karthik lauded Duckett to remain calm and not make too many big gestures. 'Not sure if this is the right way to send off a batter especially after you've got him out. Not many batsmen would behave the way Ben Duckett,' he said. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting later said during his stint that he likes Duckett even more now for the way he handled the situation. 'I love the way Ben Duckett plays his cricket, I think I like him even more now!' said Ponting Karthik later opined that it was almost like the pair knew each other really well and were having a friendly chat. England batting coach Marcus Trescothick applauded Duckett on his way into the dressing room. Trescothick later seemed to be jokingly indicating that Duckett should've elbowed Akash Deep. The incident was only one of quite a few heated moments between the Indian and English players during the latter side's innings, something that has been throughout the five-Test series that the hosts lead 2-1. After the Duckett incident, Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna got into a lengthy battle. The pair could be seen saying visibly unfriendly things to each other as Root crossed Krishna while taking a run. There was also a long steely stare shared between the two in Krishna's next over after the pacer. The umpires ended up having a word with Krishna as well. Gill had said before the match that the relations between India and English players, many of whom have played in the IPL t0gether on multiple occassions, haven't been affected by the spice of the series. 'The relation is fantastic, but when you are on the field, you are trying to win a game at the end of the day, and both the teams have been very competitive and sometimes when you are competitive in the heat of the moment, you do or say things that you might not do [otherwise],' he said. 'But once the match is over, there is mutual respect between both teams.'

5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah released from India squad ahead of day two's play

London: Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad, after not being included in playing XI for the ongoing fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at The Oval, due to workload management, said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Bumrah wasn't spotted in the Indian team bus ahead of arriving at the venue for day two's play. 'Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London,' said the BCCI in a statement on Friday. Before the five-match series began in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir said Bumrah wouldn't feature in more than three Tests on tour due to workload management. Bumrah featured in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, followed by the third and fourth games at Lord's and Old Trafford, Manchester, respectively. In three games, Bumrah picked 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, coming off bowling 119.4 overs at an average of 26 to be the leading wicket-taker for India in the ongoing series. Bumrah could have been expected to play in the fifth Test at The Oval, but he wasn't included in the playing eleven. 'We obviously want to wheel him out, but we also want to respect where his body is at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad. He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three tests and he's only bowled in one innings in Manchester.' 'But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right on that call,' said India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate at the end of day one's play. India's updated squad for fifth Test: Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and N Jagadeesan (WK).

4 Players Delhi Capitals Might Release Before IPL 2026 Auction: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis And...

photoDetails english 2940069 Delhi Capitals (DC) had a terrific start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season with four wins on the trot. However, the Axar Patel-led DC failed to continue their winning momentum and eventually failed to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs. After finishing at fifth spot in the league table of IPL 2025 with 15 points, Delhi Capitals are expected to make strategic realignments before the next season. They are likely to release several under-performing players before the IPL 2026 auction and buy some impactful performers. Here's list of players Delhi Capitals might release before the IPL 2026 auction: Updated:Aug 01, 2025, 06:44 PM IST 1. Jake Fraser-McGurk 1 / 8 Jake Fraser-McGurk was released by Delhi Capitals before the IPL 2025 auction. But he was brought back by the franchise for Rs 9 crore via the Right-To-Match option during the mega auction. DC had high expectations from Fraser-McGurk but he failed to deliver, scoring only 55 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 105.77 before eventually getting dropped from the playing XI. After his lackluster performance, Delhi Capitals might consider releasing Fraser-McGurk before the IPL 2026 auction and buy some another attacking opener. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) Jake Fraser-McGurk's Record In IPL 2 / 8 Australian youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk, who is known for his aggressive batting has scored 385 runs in 15 matches with an average of 25.67 and strike rate of 199.48 in his IPL career so far. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) 2. Mukesh Kumar 3 / 8 India pacer Mukesh Kumar was retained by Delhi Capitals (DC) using the Right to Match (RTM) card for Rs. 8 crore at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. However, Mukesh couldn't perform up to the expectations of the franchise during the last IPL season. Mukesh was one of the most expensive bowlers in IPL 2025 season as he took 12 wickets in 12 matches and conceded runs at an economy of 10.32. He was particularly very poor in death overs. After his ordinary performance, Delhi Capitals might consider releasing Mukesh before the IPL 2026 auction and look for better fast bowling options. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) Mukesh Kumar's Record In IPL 4 / 8 Mukesh Kumar, who made his IPL debut with Delhi Capitals in 2023, has picked 36 wickets in 32 matches with an economy rate of 10.39 so far. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) 3. Faf du Plessis 5 / 8 Faf du Plessis was signed for Rs 2 crore by Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, Du Plessis didn't produce impactful performances in the IPL 2025 season. The 40-year-old Du Plessis struggled with his fitness and played 9 matches, scoring 202 runs with an average of 22.44 and strike rate of 123.92 in IPL 2025 season. Given his age and fitness, Delhi might consider releasing Du Plessis and free up an overseas slot before the IPL 2026 auction for a more explosive talent. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) Faf du Plessis' Record In IPL 6 / 8 Faf du Plessis, who has won two IPL titles with CSK in the past, has scored 4773 runs in 154 matches with an average of 35.09 and strike rate of 135.78 in the cash-rich league so far. (Picture credit: BCCI/IPL) 4. Mohit Sharma 7 / 8 Veteran Indian pacer Mohit Sharma was signed by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.2 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. However, he had a disappointing IPL 2025 season, taking only two wickets in eight matches with an economy rate of 10.28. Given his age and lackluster performance, Delhi Capitals might consider releasing Mohit before the IPL 2026 auction in order to buy a younger or more consistent pacer.
