Released Arsenal defender signs for Championship club

Charlton Athletic have officially confirmed that Max Kuczynski has signed for the club, having been released by Arsenal earlier this summer.
'Bringing new players into the academy is always exciting and to do this within the U21s squad is great,' Charlton academy manager Tom Pell said.
'We work a lot on identifying the right characters, players that align with our player profiles, and those that we feel ultimately have the potential to impact our men's first-team squad in the coming years.
'Therefore it gives me great pleasure to welcome Ty [Ewens-Findlay], Max [Kuczynski] and Paris [Lock] to the club.
'Ty joins us from Cambridge United and Max from Arsenal, both whom ply their trade as central defenders. Paris joins us from AFC Wimbledon after a number of successful non-league Loans and will compliment our exciting attacking options.'

Arsenal officially confirmed Kuczynski's departure from the club back in June, including his name among a list of academy players to be released at the end of their contracts.
Kuczynski did make competitive appearances for the Arsenal u18s, but only on a couple of occasions. He made his debut as a substitute in a 5-2 win over Chelsea in May 2024, then made his first and only start for the team in a 3-2 victory over West Brom in February 2025.
With the player now ageing out of u18 football, it was ultimately little surprise the club decided to let him leave and find a club willing to give him more regular opportunities.
Kuczynski already made a handful of appearances on trial for Charlton's youth teams last season, so they know what they're getting with him.

Charlton are currently playing in the Championship, and they won their opening fixture against Watford last weekend. But as Charlton's academy manager mentions, the plan is evidently for Kuczynski to start off in the u21 team.

Despite different rooting interests, Steelers fans excited for football ahead of preseason home opener
Steelers fans had a fun day on the North Shore tailgating before heading in for Saturday night's tune-up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Saturday's contest was the only home preseason game of the 2025 season, but Max Kilgore's Acrisure Stadium debut still meant the world. "He was ready to put the T.J. [Watt] jersey on at about 7 o'clock this morning," Dan, Max's dad, said. Between the cornhole and the grilling, another crew was ready to support the Steelers, too. It's because of Max Hurleman, a rookie running back for Pittsburgh. "The guy who did the backflip last week after he scored the touchdown? That's my kid," Max's mother, Lisa, said. Her son is an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. "We're all here to celebrate his opportunity here with the Steelers," Jason, Max's father, said. Max's family and friends made the trip from Berks County, Pennsylvania. Before his final year at Notre Dame, he went to Colgate and played football there. Some of his friends from that school traveled to Pittsburgh on Saturday as well. As they celebrated with food and fun, they couldn't be prouder. "He's just doing his thing, and it's been very, very surreal," Lisa said. "Surreal" was echoed all over the North Shore on Saturday between family, friends, father, and son. The wins and losses may not count, but it's the memories that do. "I hope he goes to bed happy and had one of his favorite days ever," Kilgore said, referring to his son. The Steelers play their final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 21 on KDKA-TV. Just 22 days remain until the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 7.

Stetson Bennett rallies Rams to 23-22 preseason win over Chargers, overcoming D-line interception
Stetson Bennett rebounded from throwing a fourth-quarter interception to 305-pound defensive tackle TeRah Edwards, hitting Tru Edwards with an 8-yard touchdown pass with 5 seconds left while leading the Los Angeles Rams to a 23-22 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night. Bennett passed for 324 yards and three scores in his second straight sharp preseason performance — even if he failed to anticipate the ball-hawking skill and silky lateral movement of the hulking Edwards, who never had an interception in five seasons split between Northwestern and Illinois. The rookie picked off Bennett's throw, thundered downfield and even threw a head fake before plowing over Bennett and finally tripping at midfield to end his 29-yard return with 6:35 to play, setting off an unsurprisingly unhinged celebration on the Bolts' sideline. But Bennett shook it off with the poise of a two-time national champion and drove the Rams (2-0) downfield in the final seconds. Brennan Presley made an acrobatic 40-yard catch between two defenders with 11 seconds to play, setting up Edwards' winning catch on the next play. Justin Herbert went 2 of 5 for 46 yards while playing the opening series in his first-ever preseason game for the Chargers (2-1), who were the visiting team at the clubs' shared stadium. Luke Grimm returned a punt 66 yards for the Bolts' go-ahead touchdown with 12:36 left. Trey Lance passed for 121 yards, and second-round pick Tre Harris had six catches for 85 yards. Herbert never played in an exhibition game before his first five NFL seasons, but the Chargers' $262.5-million quarterback asked for some limited action in this outing to get some work with the Bolts' revamped offense, which is now missing starting left tackle Rashawn Slater. Herbert's only series was interrupted when receiver Quentin Johnston went down hard and left the field on a cart. Herbert also took a sack two plays before the Chargers kicked a field goal. Raheim Sanders rushed for a 1-yard TD in the third quarter set up by Lance's exceptional 34-yard completion to Harris. Bennett hit Mario Williams for a 38-yard touchdown on the final play of the third, putting an exceptional downfield throw directly in the hands of the former USC receiver. The two-time national champion quarterback at the University of Georgia also threw a 2-yard TD pass to rookie Konata Mumpfield in the first half. Grimm, an undrafted rookie receiver who only returned five punts in five seasons at Kansas, broke through the Rams' coverage unit and got down the Chargers' sideline for a score. Aubrey Pleasant served as the Rams' head coach for the game, with Sean McVay handing the reins to his assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. The Chargers finish the preseason in Santa Clara against the 49ers on Aug. 23. The Rams travel nearly 2,400 miles to face the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 23.

Cooper Rush throws TD, pick-six in preseason return to AT&T Stadium as Ravens rout Cowboys 31-13
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush threw a touchdown pass and a pick-6 in his return to AT&T Stadium, and rookie Tyler Loop kicked five field goals as the Baltimore Ravens beat the Dallas Cowboys 31-13 in preseason action Saturday night. D'Ernest Johnson added a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Ravens (2-0). Loop — expected to replace longtime kicker Justin Tucker, who was released in the offseason following accusations of inappropriate behavior by massage therapists — connected from 53, 52, 42, 36, and 29 yards. He missed once, from 50. Cornerback Andrew Booth intercepted Rush and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Aubrey kicked field goals of 47 and 36 yards for the Cowboys (0-2). Rush, who spent seven seasons as Dak Prescott's backup in Dallas before signing with Baltimore in free agency, threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Keith Kirkwood on a fourth-down play early in the second quarter. He played the first half, finishing 20 of 30 for 198 yards with two interceptions. Rush's first interception came on a throw behind receiver LaJohntay Wester. Booth grabbed it and raced down the left sideline, dodging tacklers over the final 10 yards. Joe Milton, competing to replace Rush as Prescott's backup, went 9 of 18 for 122 yards and one interception over 3 1/2 quarters. He connected with Jonathan Mingo for a 49-yard gain to set up Aubrey's first field goal. Milton's interception came immediately after Dallas' Kemon Hall picked off a deflected pass. Milton's deep throw from midfield was intercepted in the end zone by safety Reuben Lowrey. Loop's fourth field goal came on a drive extended by a roughing-the-passer penalty against linebacker Darius Harris. Neither Prescott nor Ravens starter Lamar Jackson played. Prescott appeared briefly on the stadium's videoboard, urging fans to make noise before Rush's touchdown pass. Baltimore outgained Dallas 273 yards to 31 in the first half, running 50 plays to the Cowboys' 19. The Ravens had 16 first downs before halftime; Dallas had two. Keyon Martin gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead with a sack of Milton in the end zone on third-and-13 from the Cowboys' 3-yard line. Right guard Tyler Booker, Dallas' first-round draft pick, made his preseason debut and played into the third quarter. Mingo, who led Dallas in receiving yards with his lone 49-yard catch, left in the third quarter with a knee injury. The Cowboys, playing their first home preseason game, held a moment of silence before kickoff for victims of the July 4 flooding in Texas. UP NEXT:
