The Last of Us: Season 2 Episode 6 Review

Yahooa day ago

Episode 6 of season 2 of The Last of Us is directed by Neil Druckmann, and when viewed through that lens, its intentions become clearer. It contains some of the scenes that fans of The Last of Us Part 2, and presumably its creator, hold dearest. This allows Druckmann to tightly control the sacred bond between Joel and Ellie, as well as giving space to further explore characters barely present in the game – the final moments of Eugene's life strains the connection between the protagonists in new ways. Joe Pantoliano imbues the doomed Eugene with a dash of class, Bella Ramsey slots nicely back into the role of a younger Ellie, and Druckmann steadily steers the whole ship, but this chapter is undeniably Pedro Pascal's. His pitch-perfect portrayal of Joel reminds us of what both Ellie and the show have lost.
Framed around each of Ellie's birthdays following their return to Jackson, episode 6 delicately displays Joel's urge to fulfil his role as a father. It's rooted in the very first scene, in which we see him as a teenage boy: The conversation between Joel and his father, played with warmth yet underlying hardness by Better Call Saul's Tony Dalton, presents the poisoned chalice passed down from Miller to Miller. That struggle of generational fatherhood is what has driven Joel ever since. Sarah was his world before the outbreak. Then he grieved her, holding onto her memories until Ellie arrived. By the end of this episode, she's 17, and he's on the brink of losing another daughter. It's a crossroads he's contending with, and one brilliantly displayed by Pascal throughout, as he battles to do the right thing by her.
It's perhaps best conveyed in the final moment between them – and the very last conversation between Ellie and Joel before his death. Their porchside chat is perhaps the most affecting in all of the game, so it's a huge relief to see it recreated so well here. The vulnerability in Pascal's face is all-consuming, as he barely utters a word but lets his eyes speak for him. He's terrified of losing Ellie, but he's expressing it in a way that he can't really control, and a way that will infect her, too – his tears filling that cursed cup once more, ready for Ellie to sip from and make the same selfish mistakes he did. It adds extra heartbreaking context to her 'I'm gonna be a dad' quip from earlier in the season. She'll aim to break this cycle, but little in her present-day actions suggests this.
Though that's giving more thought to the present day than episode 6 can muster, which is my major reservation about this episode. The series of flashbacks is heartfelt and works excellently when it comes to building out the protagonists of The Last of Us' past and future, but I can't help but feel like momentum has stalled here. It feels off to spend a whole episode exploring Ellie's history when we've just ratcheted the tension on who she's become. And with only one episode left to go in the season, it feels like the only road to a satisfying finale will involve covering a lot of ground in a short period of time. It's not so much a criticism of what this episode does, but more of its place within season 2.Bella Ramsey feels much more at home as a younger Ellie, portraying a wide-eyed, excitable version of the character with a far greater verve than the more fearsome evolution we got last week. It's best shown in her and Joel's visit to a nearby museum, where Ellie takes a heartstring-tugging trip into orbit, thanks to a tape recording and a long-forgotten space capsule. The smile that dances across her face is a rare moment of levity in a show, that, up until this moment, has been irrepressibly bleak. As we watch the pair enjoy their respite, it feels like some of that season 1 magic has been rebottled.
But, as ever, what The Last of Us giveth with one hand, it taketh with the other, not letting us sit with this flash of joy for long. Episode 6 finally answers a question posed in the season premiere: What did Joel do to Eugene to make Gail resent him so much? Pantoliano is given his time to shine as Eugene, a member of the Jackson community whose time is ticking away thanks to an infected's bite. His introduction enables Joel and Ellie's dynamic from season 1 to resurface, and echoes of their experience in Salt Lake City can be felt. Joel has lived long enough in this world to be wary of Eugene – any sense of optimism (or hope that Eugene can be healed) is long gone. Not Ellie, though: She still carries an element of naivety and wants to help Eugene.
The mercy killing carried out by Joel only sows more seeds of distrust between him and his surrogate daughter. In his lie to Gail about it, Ellie realises just how easy it is for Joel to hide the truth. It's in this moment that the fissures in their relationship really start to crack wide open. What Joel did isn't necessarily wrong, but it runs counter to Ellie's moral code and how she would've dealt with Eugene. It effectively means that she now knows that Joel has been lying about what happened in that Firefly hospital, and the revelation of him lying about Eugene is a great choice by Druckmann. It's an example of adaptation for the better – which this season largely hasn't landed for me – and a much more impactful, and logical, option than having Joel and Ellie traipse all the way back to Salt Lake City as they do in The Last of Us Part 2.
It's something the episode as a whole does to great effect as it further explores the intervening years and Joel and Ellie's dynamic, offering new glimpses into previously unseen moments. Joel catching Ellie doing things she maybe shouldn't be doing at 17 and his built-in resentment for Seth (due to his former life as a policeman, like Joel's dad) add more shades to the character, even though he's long gone in the present day. These little touches and grandstand speeches combine to great effect to help us fully understand why Joel made every decision that led to his death, all the way up to rescuing his eventual killer from a horde of infected. Above all else, it's the desire to be a protector that forged the Millers' poisoned chalice – and eventually led to his downfall.

11 Celebrities Who Played LGBTQ+ Roles Before Coming Out Themselves

Representation matters. And for many viewers — getting to see characters like themselves — is nothing short of life-changing. Before coming out to the public, these 11 actors bravely took on groundbreaking queer roles. Let's take a look at some performances that hit different in retrospect. Kristen Stewart:The Runaways (2010) Before famously coming out in 2017 on Saturday Night Live, Kristen played Joan Jett in The Runaways, replicating the rock star's rebellious energy and romantic tension with lead singer, Cherie Currie. This was one of Stewart's first roles that hinted at her future queer icon status. Honestly, this was an AMAZING pick for her, and an underrated film to say the least. Elliot Page: Freeheld (2015) Page's emotional role as a lesbian fighting for their partner's pension rights deeply inspired Elliot to first come out as gay. They later came out as trans in 2020 through a heartfelt message on social media. Elliot shared: "I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I've been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community." Kit Connor: Heartstopper (2022– ) Before he was Nick Nelson, Kit Connor played a young Elton John in the movie Rocketman (2019)! Connor has quite literally been playing iconic queer roles his whole life. He wasn't out during Heartstopper season 1, but later shared his bisexuality after feeling pressured to label himself. Ncuti Gatwa: Sex Education (2019-2023) Before coming out in 2023, Ncuti Gatwa lit up our screens as the bold and very fabulous Eric Effiong in Sex Education. When the time did come, he casually dropped the news in a ELLE interview. Truly iconic. Bella Ramsey: The Last of Us (2023— ) Before coming out as nonbinary, Bella Ramsey played Ellie — a queer teen surviving a zombie apocalypse. Now that's character development! Bella even recounted how creator Craig Mazin described Ellie by stating "Ellie's gay and doesn't care what you think about it." Aubrey Plaza: Happiest Season (2020) Aubrey Plaza stole the show as Riley in Happiest Season, everyone's favourite queer Christmas rom-com (wow that was a mouthful). Plaza came out publicly around the same time, sharing how she falls "in love with girls and guys." Let's be honest, we've all fallen for her too. Jonathan Bailey: Crashing (2016) Before his smash-hit role on Bridgerton, Jonathan Bailey played a bi-curious chaotic king in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Crashing. He later came out as gay and became one of queer media's favourite actors! Chris Colfer: Glee (2009-2015) Colfer played the fashion-loving Kurt Hummel before coming out IRL — despite being warned not to. He did it anyway, stating how it was "more important" to be a role model. Chloe Grace Moretz: The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) In this 2018 drama, Moretz played a queer teen forced into conversion therapy. She later revealed her part in the queer community, and stated how she once took the role to spotlight the deep emotional harm of these practices. Lukas Gage: Love, Victor (2018) Before stealing scenes on The White Lotus (and pretty much every show you binge), Lukas Gage had a small role in Love, Victor as a flirty classmate. He later cheekily came out as gay — after hooking up with his neighbour, no less. Spicy! These days, he's fully in his queer role era, most recently playing Sammy in Overcompensating. Amandla Stenberg: The Eddy (2020) In The Eddy, Amandla Stenberg played a queer teen dealing with identity, trauma, all the while healing through music. They eventually came out, and quickly became a powerful voice in the queer community — especially for young Black women. In an interview with Teen Vogue, Stenberg shared: 'I cannot stress enough how important representation is, so the concept that I can provide for other Black girls is mind-blowing. It's a really really hard thing to be silenced, and it's deeply bruising to fight against your identity and just mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn't be in." And there you have it — proof that the road to embracing your sexuality often takes time, even for actors in the spotlight. Whether these stars explored their identities through their on-screen roles or found themselves along the way, they've all played a huge part in shaping queer stories we know and cherish today! 🌈🌈 Know any more celebrities that we missed? After Organizing Over 250 Weddings for Other Couples, This Planner Designed Her Own Sunset-Hued Celebration in Mexico

Lori Overstreet and Ellie Weatherly may have matched on Hinge in April of 2021, but they quickly realized that they had far more in common than profiles on the same dating app—the two shared a number of mutual friends, and their instant connection felt easy from the very start. In June of 2023, Lori, a luxury wedding planner and owner of Imagine This Curated Events, proposed to Ellie during the Summer of Lights festival at Daniel Stowe Botanic Garden, guiding her on a scavenger hunt throughout Charlotte, North Carolina, before popping the question. Two months later, Ellie organized her own thoughtful proposal at a wine garden while one of Lori's favorite wedding singers performed surrounded by pictures of Lori's late parents and the couple's dog, Teddy, who had also recently passed. As they started planning, the idea of organizing a destination wedding weekend in Cabo, San Lucas, quickly emerged as their front-runner. With Lori's background, organizing the details from afar would be a breeze. Though she took the lead on the day's design, she knew she wanted to relax and enjoy her wedding day as a bride, not as a planner, and since the rest of the Imagine This Curated Events team was invited to the celebration, hiring an additional pro was key. "I have planned over 250 weddings, always behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly," Lori notes. "But being the bride is entirely different—you're no longer the planner; you're the focus. Instead of managing the details, you have to trust others to bring your vision to life. It's a shift from orchestrating to experiencing, from guiding to being guided." In the end, she and Ellie interviewed ten different local wedding planners before hiring Nabia Weddings to handle their celebration's day-of-coordination. On February 7, 2025, the brides welcomed 70 of their closest family members and friends to Mexico with a sunset dinner cruise. Guests boarded the boat dressed in white and enjoyed cocktails by the famous Arch of San Lucas. The next day, on February 8, 2025, Lori and Ellie were married at Mar Del Cabo in San José del Cabo in an intimate, sunset-colored ceremony and reception overlooking the ocean. Here, see all the photos of Lori and Ellie's weekend from Christian Reyes Photography. The celebration was full of personal touches, from oyster-inspired design elements as a nod to their second date to a heartwarming dance in honor of Lori's parents. Related: The Complete Guide to Planning a Wedding 'When designing the wedding I knew that I wanted to match the west coast sunset vibes,' Lori says. 'We decided to focus on citrus and go with hues of orange, yellow, and hints of chartreuse.' With the color palette set, the brides invited their guests to Cabo with a sunset-inspired invitation suite that included a few pops of gold and peach. They also included meaningful motifs tied into their wedding day, including an oyster shell illustration, a custom monogram, and a subtle floral pattern on the envelope liners. An oval-shaped insert included the details of their sunset welcome party cruise. At the welcome celebration, guests wore white while Ellie stood out in a green NBD jumpsuit and Lori made a statement in a silk backless Sau Lee dress. 'We were there during peak whale season and the whales did not disappoint during our welcome sunset cruise,' Lori remembers. 'Several adult whales and their calves breached the surface of the water and gave our guest quite a show.' Guests enjoyed cocktail hour overlooking the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas before sitting down to a traditional Mexican buffet dinner below deck. Wooden tables were dressed with mauve gauze runners and floral centerpieces in varying shades of pink and red. Since Lori and Ellie bonded over their mutual love of oysters on their second date and have since enjoyed over 80 regional varieties together, including oysters in the wedding weekend (both on the menu and in the décor) was essential. 'We like to think of ourselves as oyster connoisseurs, keeping a running list with a rating system to track which ones we love and which ones we'd pass on next time,' Lori says,.'To celebrate this shared passion, we incorporated subtle oyster-inspired details throughout our wedding, from the menu to the invitations.' The couple shared a first look before the wedding ceremony, and the time together gave them a chance to pose for photos and exchange vows privately. Ellie wore a fitted ivory lace and crepe wedding dress by Colby John with a square neckline and detachable tulle sleeves. When she walked out of the fitting room wearing the gown at a bridal salon and noticed that her mom and sister had been moved to tears, she knew it was the one. She accessorized with a one-carat solitaire diamond pendant that was a gift from her parents on the morning of the wedding and chose a natural makeup look and a pulled back ponytail. 'I wanted something sleek that would hold up to the environment and require little touch ups,' she says. Lori wore a strapless satin sheath gown with a detachable train from Winnie Couture. 'For my wedding, I wore my grandmother's diamond tennis bracelet and a ring borrowed from my sister,' Lori says. 'The ring had special meaning because my sister had taken our mother's diamonds and transformed them into a piece she now wears every day.' She wore her hair up to complement her dress and highlight her collarbone. Lori and Ellie held matching bouquets in shades of peach, orange, and coral hues, which were perfectly in keeping with the celebration's color palette. The bold arrangements included ranunculus, garden roses, tulips, and greenery, among other blooms. The brides decided to tie the knot overlooking the ocean at Mar Del Cabo, a venue that stood out far above the rest they considered. 'We toured many different venues in Cabo and there wasn't a venue that even compared to Mar Del Cabo,' Ellie says. At the ceremony, the ocean view was framed by a rounded arch covered in orange and peach flowers, including ranunculus, Lori's favorite. The couple hired Agency Treehouse to perform at their ceremony. They both walked down the aisle to a cello version of 'This Wandering Day' from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Ellie walked down the aisle with her mom, Mitzie, and her dad, Joe. Sadly, Lori lost both of her parents before her 30th birthday, so she found special ways to honor them on the wedding day. 'One thing Lori was determined to do was include her parents in both the ceremony and reception,' Ellie says. 'As she walked down the aisle, Lori held two balloons—one for each parent—and released them to symbolize them walking her down the aisle.' Lori and Elie each had a matron of honor and bridesmaids, who they encouraged to choose their own dresses within a sunset color palette. They asked their friend, Elizabeth, to share a reading about marriage before they exchanged vows. Once they were officially married, they celebrated back down the aisle to Donna Lewis' 'I Love You Always Forever," a song Lori often sings to Ellie. After the ceremony, Lori and Ellie's photographer led them onto the beach for a sunset portrait session. The pair posed in the sand against the crashing waves before joining their guests for their cocktail hour. One of their favorite memories of the day was looking down at the reception and watching their guest's astonished faces as they entered. Lori and Ellie enlisted Bunker Projects Studio to build an artistic seating chart installation for their reception. The sculptural display had cut-out windows in abstract shapes. Each warm yellow shape framed guests' names and table assignments for the reception. They customized the display with their names, wedding date, and location. At the reception on the beach, the brides made sure to incorporate the three main hues in the day's color palette; yellow, orange, and green were on full display. They chose a yellow patterned linen and matching runner for the tables as a nod to Lori's mom's favorite color. 'To bring our vision to life, we sourced Henna Mimosa linens and chartreuse napkins from BBJ La Tavola,' Lori says. The centerpiece arrangements featured vibrant orange florals with pops of green. They also created a cozy ambience with light wood flooring and a lush floral arrangement hanging above the dance floor, accented with custom rattan and macrame lanterns. The ceremony floral arch was repurposed at the reception to frame the couple at their sweetheart table, which was set in front of the ocean and decorated with a ground installation of roses and greenery. Lori and Ellie shared their first dance to '1950' by King Princess. 'We loved what the underlying meaning of the song stands for,' Lori says. Their DJ played Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World' for Ellie's father-daughter dance. Lori danced with her brother-in-law, Jamie, to an Adele tune. Great food and drink was a priority for the brides, so along with signature Sea Basil margarita cocktails and a four-course meal, Lori and Ellie also served a three-tiered white wedding cake with sunset colors cascading down the center to mimic flowing drapery. Inside, layers of pistachio lemon and chocolate ganache cake awaited. A late-night churro bar was also on offer. The newlyweds closed out the wedding celebrations with fireworks on the beach, then spent the next three nights in Cabo to unwind. To couples currently planning a wedding, Lori and Ellie recommend personalizing your day. 'Be true to yourself and don't let others' opinions cloud your judgment. How to cancel your Max subscription in 5 easy steps

Streaming newcomer, Max, surfaced in Australia just under three months ago. Becoming the official home to HBO content, including Warner Bros. Discovery, TLC, HGTV and The Food Network, Max has a great back catalogue. And it arrived with a pretty appealing introductory offer, cutting subscription prices nearly in half for the first year of the service. However, that offer has come and gone, ending just a month after the streamer launched. That said, you may have subscribed to the new streamer just to find that you're not keen on the US TV giant's catalogue, or you're only interested in when new seasons of hit shows drop, like The Last of Us or The White Lotus. Given the price hikes that have hit many streaming services in the past 12 months, it's hard to justify holding onto some of your subscriptions — and we get it! So if you need help cancelling your Max AU subscription, we've got you covered in five simple steps. Do note, though, these steps don't fully delete your account, and you can always reactivate your plan at any time. If you want to cancel your Max account, you'll need to log into the streaming service using a web browser on a computer. Please note that you cannot cancel your Max account using the app on a mobile device or Smart TV. Hover your mouse over your profile icon in the top right corner of the homepage. A drop-down menu will appear under your profile icon. You'll need to select Subscription. On your Subscription page, you'll need to scroll down to the 'Current Plan' section. This is where you'll see your plan details, including your next billing date and payment information. You will see an option under this section that reads 'Cancel your subscription'. Click on this to proceed. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. A pop-up window should appear and ask you if you want to confirm your cancellation. Max will prompt you to look at other plan pricing as well and will also feature your next billing date and advise that your account will remain active until this date. After this date, your account will indeed be cancelled. You will need to select the 'Continue to Cancel' button at the bottom of the window to complete the cancellation process. You will also receive a cancellation confirmation email to the address registered on your account. Cancelling Max really does come down to whether or not you're getting enough value out of the platform. If you find yourself opting for a different streamer or find that Max's catalogue isn't worth your while, then cancelling your account may be your best option. It's worth noting that Max does offer cheaper subscription options, so if you find yourself paying too much, we'd recommend dropping down a tier. Otherwise, if you're looking for recommendations on what streaming services to try this month instead, here's what we suggest. Thinking of cancelling Max this month? Here's what we recommend instead. June is a stellar month to sign up for Disney Plus, thanks to a juicy EOFY offer that sees new and eligible returning subscribers score a four-month subscription for just AU$4.99p/m (the AU$15.99p/m ongoing). Disney Plus' blockbuster lineup includes a new season of FX's The Bear and a brand-new Marvel series, Ironheart, on June 25. You'll need to act fast if you want to nab this deal, though, as it will end on June 11, 2025. It's up to you on how you choose to spend your hard-earned cash, so if you're looking for ways to save on your streaming subscriptions, you can check out our streaming services price comparison hub.
