ASEAN calls for prudence in South China Sea, lauds progress on COC
Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the fragility of global peace is becoming more apparent by the day, and therefore ASEAN must redouble its efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region are maintained.
'We must therefore ensure that geopolitical tensions do not escalate or threaten to undermine security and global trade in the South China Sea,' he said in his opening remarks at the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with China in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings here on Thursday.
Mohamad said ASEAN welcomed the progress on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) and hopes for continued positive momentum.
'We are confident that with the full commitment of all parties in the negotiations, we should be able to conclude an effective and substantive COC in the not-too-distant future,' he said.
Mohamad also addressed the growing global concerns over nuclear weapons and the non-proliferation regime, saying that ASEAN welcomes China's readiness to become the first Nuclear Weapon State (NWS) to sign and ratify the Protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty without reservations.
'This would mark a significant step forward, demonstrating China's leadership and commitment to a nuclear weapon-free Southeast Asia,' he said.
He added that Malaysia, as the Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, is committed to working with all ASEAN member states and China to further advance the partnership to deliver real benefits to the peoples. — BERNAMA

Anwar says every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. – Bernama photo KUALA TERENGGANU (July 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied that his official visits abroad, including to Brazil to attend the recent BRICS Summit, were merely for 'leisure', but rather as an important effort to establish global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various Asean meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the Asean Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of Asean, the Federal Government, and state governments.
