ABCA names Auburn baseball's Butch Thompson Southeast Region Coach of the Year

USA Today25-06-2025
Butch Thompson wins coach of the year award after leading the Tigers back to the postseason.
The 2025 season was a great turnaround for the Auburn Tigers baseball after a disappointing 2024 season. Auburn posted a 41-20 record and ended the season in the Super Regional versus eventual national runners-up Coastal Carolina. That type of season has resulted in head coach Butch Thompson being honored. On Tuesday, Thompson was named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Thompson is the first Auburn coach to lead the Tigers to four region championships. He did so in 2018, 2019, and 2022 before this past season. It was the first time in Auburn baseball history that the school hosted a Super Regional. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not get past the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina lost in the 2025 College Baseball World Series Final to the LSU Tigers.
The SEC was tough as always, and the Tigers held their own, going 17-13. That record earned the Tigers a sixth-place finish in the best conference in college baseball. Auburn earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA College Baseball Tournament and finished ranked No. 13 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. All of that also resulted in six Auburn players making the All-SEC Team.
On the statistical side of things, the Tigers finished third in the SEC with a batting average of .304. It was a historic season for Thompson, winning his 300th game as the head coach of the Tigers. In his ten seasons, he has posted a record of 324-232-1 with six postseason appearances. With the success of the 2025 season, the 2026 season should bring a lot of excitement with Thompson leading the program for an 11th season.

Former Auburn linebacker Wesley Steiner signs contract with Seahawks

Another former Auburn Tiger has joined the Seattle Seahawks. Linebacker turned fullback Wesley Steiner, who spent three seasons on the Plains, signed a contract with Seattle earlier this week. The former Tiger finished his college career at Washington State following four years of sporadic playing time as a Tiger. A full-time linebacker in college, the 6-foot, 235-pound Steiner will switch from the defensive backfield to the offensive backfield as a professional. A native of Warner Robins, GA, Steiner was collegiate teammates with current Seahawks Derick Hall and Nehemiah Pritchett. Former Tiger teammate D.J James was also signed by Seattle after the 2024 NFL Draft being being waived and landing on New England's Practice Squad. While his chances at making the team as a defensive player may have been dull, Steiner does have a decent path to a roster spot as a fullback if the former Tiger can show his value on special teams. Other than himself, Seattle's only other true fullback on the roster is fellow first-year player Robbie Ouzts. With current backup fullback Brady Russell's football experience coming exclusively from the offensive side, Steiner's defensive background may give him a leg up, at least in the versatility category, in the competition for a spot on the 53-man roster. In four years at Auburn and a season at Washington State, Steiner accumulated 96 total tackles and a forced fumble. His best season came in 2022, when he contributed 46 total tackles for Auburn, including 10 and 11 against Ole Miss and LSU, respectively. After being claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, the utility player is set to join his fourth major league team in just over a year. According to Evan Woodbery of MLive, the young utility player was picked up by the Dodgers after the Toronto Blue Jays signed Kennedy, along with pitcher Joe Mantiply, to minor league deals in July. The Dodgers made the move to add Kennedy to their 40-man roster after placing third baseman Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list for the second time this season with an oblique strain. Buddy Kennedy's experience has spanned five different teams, but he has only appeared in 60 major league games since 2022. In the 140 at-bats he's had, Kennedy has career statistics that include a .193 batting average, .288 on-base percentage, .300 slugging percentage, and a .588 OPS while hitting two home runs and 19 RBI. His ability to play at first base, second base, and third base made the Dodgers interested in him MORE: The Los Angeles Dodgers made the move on Kennedy before the start of a crucial three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Friday. After their 3-2 win to begin the series, the Dodgers are now tied with the Friars for the top spot in the NL West. The two teams will be in a five more games over the next nine days.

Nebraska football in the mix for four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson

Nebraska football is making a firm push for class of 2027 four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson. This was reported by Rivals' Marcus Benjamin on Friday. Thompson is the No. 101 overall player in the 2027 class, the seventh overall defensive lineman in the class, and the ninth overall player from the state of Florida in his class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, and Syracuse are the schools that are standing out most in his recruitment. The Huskers have been in communication with Thompson quite a bit lately. Defensive line coach Terry Bradden has been the primary point of contact for the Huskers. Thompson had 66 tackles and four sacks in 15 games last season, per statistics from The Huskers could benefit from more talented defensive linemen, and Thompson certainly brings a strong skill set. Playing under Bradden could only help him further enhance his game. The program will have to work cut out for them in this recruitment.
