Filed the wrong ITR form? Here's how to fix it to avoid penalty
Simply put, if you filed your original return on time, just log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal, select the 'Revised Return' option, enter the acknowledgement number of your original ITR, choose the correct form for your income situation, make the necessary changes, and don't forget to e-verify it.Pankaj Aneja adds, 'The revised return fully replaces the original return and must be filed by December 31 of the relevant assessment year (or any extended timeline). Multiple revisions are permitted within the allowable timeframe.'WHAT IF YOU MISS THE REVISION DEADLINE?Panic usually sets in if you spot the error after the window for revising your return closes. But all is not lost. There are still options, but with a few conditions.Surana points out, "If the mistake is found after the revision window closes, you can file a rectification under Section 154. This provision enables the correction of mistakes that are factual and do not require extensive verification or fresh investigation. Another option is the Updated Return under Section 139(8A). This lets you correct mistakes within 48 months from the end of the relevant assessment year, but you'll need to pay additional tax."Aneja explains, 'Once the revision deadline is over (i.e., post December 31 of the assessment year or after the assessment is complete), the usual revision isn't possible. However, you can file an "Updated Return" under Section 139(8A) with payment of additional tax.''A updated return can be filed one time with no further revision permitted thereafter,' he added.advertisementAneja also shared the timeline and additional tax rates for filing an Updated Return:

However, you cannot use this option in every case. For instance, you can't file an Updated Return to declare a loss, reduce your tax bill, or claim a bigger refund. Also, if the tax department has already started or completed a search, survey, or assessment under different sections of the Income Tax Act, you cannot use this option, Aneja clarified.WILL CORRECTING YOUR ITR INVITE TROUBLE?One common worry is whether fixing your ITR will attract scrutiny. The short answer, not always.Aneja says, 'There's no rule that simply revising your ITR automatically flags you for scrutiny. But if you make frequent or major changes, it can catch the attention of the tax department's AI systems.''Substantial revisions or multiple corrections could signal carelessness or an attempt to hide income, which might raise a red flag. If your revised return still doesn't match the information in Form 26AS, AIS, or TIS, expect a notice or scrutiny,' he cautions.advertisementWRONG ITR FORM CAN DELAY YOUR REFUNDFiling the wrong form can cost you time and money. Surana explains, 'If the form used does not correspond to the taxpayer's actual sources of income or claimable deductions, the return may be classified as defective under Section 139(9) of the IT Act. In such cases, the return may either be rejected or require rectification within a stipulated time.'Using the right ITR form is important because each one is designed for certain types of income. For example, you can't use ITR-1 if you have foreign income. If you have capital gains, you may need ITR-2 or ITR-3. Getting it right the first time saves time, money, and unnecessary stress. For instance, if you have foreign income, you can't use ITR-1. If you have capital gains, you may need ITR-2 or ITR-3.DON'T WAIT, FIX IT EARLYIf you've filed the wrong form, don't wait for the tax department to flag it. The sooner you fix it, the better your chances of avoiding late fees, interest, or missed refunds. With the right form and careful filing, your tax return can be hassle-free, and you won't have to lose sleep over a simple mistake.advertisementSo double-check your form before you file. And if you do slip up, remember, you still have time to set it right.- Ends

So, the time which is left for filing income tax return is not sufficient,' says CA Pratibha Goyal, partner of PD Gupta & Company. ITR Filing 2025: Only 30 Days Left; Will The Deadline Be Extended Again?
Last Updated: The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry asked the CBDT to extend the ITR filing deadline for AY 2025-26 due to delays in utility releases and software updates. ITR Deadline: Taxpayers may get more time to file their returns if the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI's)request to extend the due date is accepted. In a letter to the CBDT as per ET Wealth report, the chamber said the ITR filing process for AY 2025–26 has been hit by delays in the release of utilities, arriving nearly three months later than usual. Many forms were still unavailable in early August, leaving little time for preparation. Frequent changes to utilities and slow software updates add to the strain, especially in areas with patchy internet. GCCI has also pushed for a new deadline for tax audits, currently set at September 30. It's important to note that although the central government extended the ITR filing deadline for individuals not subject to a tax audit from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, the move offered limited relief. The ITR forms were released much later than usual, leaving taxpayers with little extra time to prepare and file. This is the key reason why the GCCI has submitted its representation seeking a further extension. The chamber added that frequent changes to the utilities, coupled with poor internet access in several regions, have left taxpayers and professionals with limited time to ensure accurate filings, as per ET Wealth report. It has also requested an extension of the September 30 deadline for tax audit reports. For Assessment Year 2025–26, the dates of release for the latest Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities and forms are as follows: ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, and ITR-4 were all released on between May, June and July. ITR-5 was released on 8 August 2025. ITR-6 Excel Utility was released on 15 August 2025. ITR-7 has not yet been released. Form 3CA-3CD was released on 29 July 2025. Form 3CB-3CD was released on 29 July 2025. Different Deadlines For Taxpayers: September 15 Deadline For Those Who Don't Require Audit The tax department has extended the deadline for those taxpayers who don't require audit to file the taxes. The changes in income tax forms, new slabs under new income tax and capital gain taxes have prompted the department to extend the dates. Who Can File ITR By October 31, 2025? Taxpayers whose accounts need to be audited—such as companies, proprietorships, and working partners in firms—have until October 31, 2025, to file their income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Before they can do that, they must ensure their audit report is submitted by September 30, 2025. As of now, the Income Tax Department has not announced any extension to this deadline. Deadline for Those with International Dealings If a taxpayer is involved in international transactions or certain specified domestic transactions, they are required to submit a report under Section 92E. In this case, the due date for filing ITR is November 30, 2025. To stick to this timeline, their audit report must be submitted by October 31, 2025. Just like in other categories, the government has not given any update about extending this due date. About the Author Business Desk First Published: August 15, 2025, 16:53 IST

Trump Imposes Higher Tariffs Even As India Boosts Oil, Gas Imports From US
New Delhi: Even as former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports, one key detail seems to have gone unnoticed — India has significantly increased its imports of American oil and gas. This growing energy trade has actually helped narrow India's trade surplus with the U.S., aligning with one of the main goals of Trump's own trade policy: reducing trade imbalances. India's Growing Energy Imports from the US Official data reveals that India's oil and gas imports from the US soared by 51 per cent between January and June this year. In fact, India nearly doubled its liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases from the US, rising from 1.41 billion dollars in 2023-24 to 2.46 billion dollars in the financial year 2024-25. (Also Read: ITR Filing 2025: Key Precautions To Take & What Happens If You Miss The Deadline — Know Before You File) India to Boost US Energy Imports In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that India would boost its energy imports from the US to 25 billion dollars in 2025, up from 15 billion dollars in 2024. This move aims to help reduce the US trade deficit. Following this, Indian government-owned oil and gas companies began talks with US firms to secure more long-term energy deals. New Delhi has also emphasized its goal to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on Russian oil. India has pointed out that it has been buying Russian oil as no sanctions had been imposed on such purchases that were less than the price cap imposed by the G7 nations. It was, in fact, part of the US policy to allow such purchases, as more oil in the market would prevent prices from soaring in the international market. Moreover, purchases at low prices also helped to restrict Russia's earnings. (Also Read: ITR Filing 2025: Key Precautions To Take & What Happens If You Miss The Deadline — Know Before You File) India has also pointed out that the US still continues to buy fertilisers, chemicals, uranium and palladium from Russia. Meanwhile, New Delhi has made it clear that India and the US share a very important strategic relationship that goes beyond trade. The government has stated that India-US ties are multi-layered and trade is 'only one aspect' of a 'very important relationship' that also rests on geopolitical and strategic considerations. The government has also informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs that there is no change of plans for the sixth round of India-US talks, which might lead to a trade agreement between the two countries.
