Jared Verse is the type of pass rusher who gives opposing linemen nightmares. Just ask Terron Armstead, a five-time Pro Bowl left tackle who recently retired from the NFL after 12 seasons.
Armstead only faced Verse once in his career, a Week 10 bout between the Rams and Dolphins last season, but he's glad he never has to block the Defensive Rookie of the Year again. It's one of the highest compliments an offensive lineman can pay a defender, and it's clear Verse left a lasting impression on Armstead in their one battle.
In a recent interview on The SiriusXM Blitz, Armstead mentioned Verse first when asked which pass rusher made his decision to retire easier.
'No. 1, he was a rookie from the Rams. That young boy Jared Verse? I'm cool. I'm good. I never got to see that man again. I'm OK with never seeing that young man again in my life,' Armstead said.
Verse is only 24 but he's already one of the most powerful edge rushers in the game. Armstead got a firsthand look at Verse's bull rush last season and he says it's unlike others he faced in his career.
Even after going up against Verse just once, Armstead guarantees Jared will win Defensive Player of the Year someday.
'Bull rush is different. Dog, it's different,' Armstead said. 'You know that it's coming, you brace yourself. He's different. Jared Verse is different. He will be a Defensive Player of the Year one of these days. Mark my words.'
In the Rams' loss to the Dolphins last season, Verse had five pressures, a strip-sack and recovery, as well as three total stops, according to Pro Football Focus. His 89.7 overall grade was his highest in any game, so he sure did show out against Armstead and Miami's linemen.
The strip-sack didn't come against Armstead but it was an impressive play, no less.

In addition to Verse, the other pass rushers Armstead is glad he never has to see again are Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson and Maxx Crosby. That puts into perspective the class Verse is in as a defender already, ranking among the best edge rushers in football after just one season.
It shouldn't be long before Verse turns his Defensive Rookie of the Year award into Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The race for HBCU football's top individual honor is officially on. The Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF) has released its 2025 Watch List for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award, spotlighting 50 of the most talented HBCU football players today. Presented annually to the most outstanding college football player from a Historically Black College or University, the award comes with one of the sport's most prestigious prizes - the Deacon Jones Trophy. This year's Watch List features talent from across the HBCU football landscape: SWAC – 18 playersMEAC – 11 playersSIAC – 10 playersCIAA – 8 playersOVC – 2 playersCAA – 1 player Since its creation in 2016, the award has been claimed by some of the biggest names in recent HBCU football history. Former North Carolina A&T and NFL running back Tarik Cohen was the inaugural winner, followed by two-time Bowie State QB Amir Hall, Tennessee State WR Chris Rowland, and Alabama A&M QB Aqeel Glass - who claimed both the Spring and Fall 2021 awards. Shedeur Sanders took home the 2022 honor before heading to the NFL, while Davius Richard (North Carolina Central) and Jeremy Moussa (Florida A&M) shared the award in 2023. Last year, Jada Byers of Virginia Union stood alone as the 2024 winner.
