DRI busts drug haul worth Rs 23.5 crore, four traffickers arrested in northeast operations
With the assistance of the 19 BN Assam Rifles, the DRI intercepted a truck at Noney, Manipur, on May 21 and seized 569 grams of heroin and 1,039 grams of methamphetamine tablets. The drugs were concealed in a specially fabricated cavity within the truck's chassis.
In another operation on May 22, the DRI, along with the Assam Rifles FIU Unit Silchar, intercepted a truck at Aloicherra in Hailakandi district, Assam, and seized 2,640.53 grams of heroin hidden in a fabricated cavity on the truck's bedload floor.
The press release stated, 'The recovered contraband drugs, worth around Rs. 23.5 crore in the international grey drug market, have been seized under the NDPS Act, 1985, and four persons have been arrested.'
Since January 2025, the DRI has seized contraband including ganja, methamphetamine tablets, and heroin worth Rs. 173 crore and arrested 26 persons in the North Eastern region, the release added.
In a related operation, Assam Rifles, in coordination with Ngopa Police Station, recovered 758 grams of Heroin No. 4 near Teikhang in Saitual district during a joint operation on the intervening night of May 26-27, an official statement said.
Acting on specific intelligence related to narcotics trafficking, a mobile vehicle check post (MVCP) was set up by Assam Rifles and Ngopa Police personnel.
During the operation, two individuals riding Kenbo bikes were intercepted, leading to the seizure of heroin with an estimated market value of Rs 5.36 crore, an official release stated.
The recovered contraband has been handed over to Ngopa Police Station for further investigation.
The joint operation underscores the continued efforts of security forces to combat drug trafficking and strengthen law enforcement in the region. (ANI)

Mangaluru: RoshanSaldanha, a Mangaluru-based man accused of defrauding businessmen across several states of several crore rupees, has been remanded to judicial custody. The accused, who was arrested earlier this week, is facing multiple FIRs related to financial frauds, police said. Meanwhile, a Malaysian woman found at Saldanha's residence at the time of arrest is being processed for repatriation. Police said she has no role in the fraud. Her documents are being verified in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs.

Vigilance raids at RTOs unravel widespread corruption across Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau officials have detected widespread irregularities and corrupt practices during ongoing statewide raids at the regional transport offices (RTO)under the motor vehicles department (MVD). During the raid that began on Saturday morning, the Vigilance seized cash to the tune of Rs 1.4 lakh from 11 agents, who had brought it for distribution among corrupt officials in various offices. As many as 21 officials were also found to have received Rs 7.85 lakh through payment apps from agents as kickbacks. An amount of Rs 49,000 was found discarded on the premises of Nilambur Sub RTO, while an undisclosed amount was found concealed in the window of Vaikom Sub RTO. In Thiruvananthapuram RTO, an officer was found to have received Rs 16,000 from agents, while two officers of Varkala Sub RTO were found to have received Rs 82,000 from agents. An agent was caught with Rs 4,000 when he arrived at the Tiruvalla Sub RTO. The same person was also found to have sent Rs 2,500 to an officer via a payment app. At the same time, another agent was caught from Cherthala Sub RTO when he arrived at the office with Rs 10,000 in cash. At the Pala Sub RTO, two agents were caught while they were inside the office, which is a violation of rules. In Vandiperiyar Sub RTO, an agent was caught carrying Rs 16,000, while another agent was caught from Udumbanchola for possessing Rs 66,000. An Ernakulam RTO officer was found to have received Rs 71,500 from an agent, while an agent was nabbed from Guruvayoor Sub RTO for possessing Rs 2,240.
