Rebus returning to TV screens as BBC renews show for a second series

Richard Rankin's portrayal of the hard-bitten Edinburgh detective first aired in spring last year in a six-part series.
Its first episode picked up 6.3 million viewers across all platforms and it recently won three RTS Scotland awards.
In series two, detective sergeant John Rebus will uncover the links between the violent world of the Edinburgh drug trade and the 'professional bourgeois world of law and finance, where police sometimes fear to tread'.
The six-part series is being produced by Eleventh Hour Films and is written for the screen by Gregory Burke.
Sir Ian, who is the show's executive producer, said: 'Season one of Rebus ended on a cliffhanger.
'Only screenwriter Gregory Burke knows what happens next.
'So I'm hugely excited that season two will soon be with us.
'Rebus is back – mean, moody and as magnificent as ever!'
Mr Burke said: 'I'm delighted to be given the chance by the BBC and Eleventh Hour Films to bring Rebus back to the nation's TV screens once more.
'Ian Rankin's character and body of work are the perfect materials with which to explore contemporary Scottish society and the turbulent world that surrounds it.'
Louise Thornton, head of commissioning at BBC Scotland, says: 'We were blown away with the audience response to the new-look Rebus first time round so bringing it back for a second series was always a priority.
'The combination of brilliant storytelling, powerful performances and top class production values will make this new series must-see television.
'This commission is part of our recently-announced strategy to bring more high impact scripted content from Scotland and we're confident audiences will enjoy this next series as much as they did the first.'

Edwards, 64, was seen in public for the first time in six months earlier this week carrying bottles of prosecco to his car in Swansea.. ‌ Last year Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and has rarely been seen in public since. He was last pictured vaping in February. ‌ Six months on the ex-BBC presenter was seen with a new short white stubbly beard and glasses with a thick black frame as he walked back to his car in Swansea. ‌ Convicted sex offender Edwards was dressed in a light blue polo shirt, a dark navy blue jacket with large pockets and button-up detailing and a pair of navy trousers with a black belt. He was photographed holding onto three small bottles of prosecco, a baseball cap and a receipt on his 64th birthday earlier this week, according to the Mirror. Earlier this week reports surfaced that Edwards has upset staff by failing to repay his £200,000 salary despite demands for him to do so. Last year bosses said that they had formally asked the former presenter to return the wages he received following his arrest. After Edwards' arrest in 2023 the BBC continued to pay him until his resignation in 2024. ‌ The BBC maintained that they were insisting on Edwards returning his salary for that period, but according to the Mirror he has yet to do so. Edwards was seen carrying miniature bottles of Prosecco on his birthday (Image: / In a previous statement the BBC said: "Huw Edwards has not returned any money paid to him by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work for either BBC public service or the BBC's commercial operations. ‌ "The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned." The TV star suffered a huge fall from grace in 2023 after reports emerged that a high-profile, unnamed BBC presenter paid tens of thousands of pounds for explicit photos. A mother claimed this went on from 2020, when their child was 17, for three years, and funded their child's drug habit. He was suspended from the BBC at the time. He was subsequently suspended from the BBC. ‌ Later, Edwards was identified by his wife Vicky Flind in a statement where she revealed he had been "suffering from serious mental health issues" and was undergoing in-patient treatment. Later that year, Edwards was arrested and his mobile phone was confiscated during an unrelated investigation which exposed his involvement in WhatsApp conversations with Alex Williams. He later admitted to creating indecent images of children and received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years along with an order to complete a sex offender programme. John insisted a festive family reunion with his two-year-old daughter would interfere with Tommy's mindset ahead of the fight. In scenes aired on episode two, John said: "The thing we don't want is distractions. People coming. We don't want it. "Because when you're here and you're talking to people you're not resting. You want to be training eat, drink, sleep, train, repeat. "It's six weeks of hell but you've got another four to six weeks to go and to do the other stuff, haven't you? "All that's out there is the pub, alcohol, s*** food and s*** company." Tommy replied: "That's all I ever do anyway. I don't do nothing else my whole life. Train." John said: "I don't know, Tom. You do enjoy yourself, don't you?," "Not really..." Tommy replied. John said: "If you can't sacrifice six weeks of your time without your children, all that s*** in the world outside. What we doing here?" Tommy was not happy with the decision and said 20 minutes with his daughter on Christmas Day would not change his boxing mentality. The former Love Island star said: "I can't see, on Christmas Day, me picking the baby, me saying 'Merry Christmas', I can't see that going to lead me to win a fight or not. "You're not doing that this time," but John demanded. Tommy replied: "But you've got to be happy." John insisted that sacrifices needed to be made in order to win big. Tommy continued: "Yeah, but you just got to go and hug the baby for five minutes. There's no harm in that." His dad hit back "You go back, you have your Christmas, you hold the baby, all of a sudden you get an L on your record for that day. "You will never look at them in the same light again, family or not family because you'll resent them." Tommy said: "20 minutes out of my day on Christmas," to which John added: "The greats don't do it." Speaking to the camera, Tommy explained why his father had such a staunch view on the matter, saying: "My dad doesn't understand the modern world. "And obviously he's just an old school fella and the way the world is today, you know, even I find it hard to live in the world sometimes today, with the amount of bull**** that's going on." Earlier today The Sun revealed the real reason for Molly-Mae's absence from Tommy's BBC show premiere has been revealed. The social media influencer was missing from the launch of his brand new reality TV series which raised eyebrows despite the pair being back together and claiming to be at "they're happiest". Molly also failed to mark the event on social media and shared no posts to support Tommy and his show. MISSING MOLLY But The Sun understands that Molly skipped the event as she was keen to not "overshadow" the launch of Tommy's programme and let him have his own time in the spotlight following their up and down 12 months. A source told The Sun: "Molly is keen to keep a low profile at the moment. "She is obviously back with Tommy but it's his night and doesn't want to overshadow it. "It's been a funny time for Molly - she's very thick skinned but she's had a lot to deal with and isn't used to backlash." A representative for Molly told The Sun that she was "away working" and very busy which caused her to miss the event. Current social media snaps show Molly enjoying a sunny break away with her best pal, Tayla-Blue. The best friend duo could be seen enjoying a relaxing evening by the beach with their children yesterday evening in snaps shared to Tayla's social media feed. One photo showed Molly and her daughter Bambi attempting to take a splash in the sea. Whilst other snaps showed Bambi looking stylish on the beach. For Tommy, he was joined by his parents in Manchester for a screening of BBC show The Good. The Bad. The Fury, which sees him rehash details of their recent split, as well as make a series of shock revelations about it. In the show, he made the shock revelation that he was downing "20 shots a night" and drinking to get "blackout drunk" ahead of their split last year. He said: "The reason for our ending the relationship was alcohol." He added: "I couldn't train, box, lift weights, that was all gone. "My right hand was messed up, I was in dire pain, it's just what happens over years of impact on the hand. "I had lost my entire identity, lost my life."
