Malaysia begins Haj return flights, 31,600 pilgrims to fly home by July 10
The group of 283 pilgrims, mainly from Kedah and Selangor, departed from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah aboard Malaysia Airlines' AMAL flight MH8251 at 5.40 am local time.
Their arrival was welcomed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, alongside Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain and TH Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mustakim Mohamad.
'Alhamdulillah, this year's haj operations have gone smoothly and we are now beginning to bring the pilgrims home safely,' said Mohd Na'im.
He also congratulated TH for receiving the prestigious Labaytum Diamond Award, recognising the agency's efforts to enhance service quality and haj management internationally.
Among the key successes this year, Mohd Na'im noted, was the safe completion of wuquf, the pivotal standing at Arafah, by all Malaysian pilgrims, including 95 ailing pilgrims who were transported in 10 specially arranged buses under the Safari Wuquf programme.

Meanwhile, Mustakim said that despite ongoing challenges such as extreme heat and limited tent space in Mina, TH continues to implement improvements aimed at enhancing pilgrims' comfort and safety.
These included adding extra toilet facilities and storage space during the critical Masyair phase of the haj.
A total of 100 chartered flights operated by AMAL and Saudia Airlines are scheduled to repatriate the entire Malaysian contingent of 31,600 pilgrims, with flights beginning today and concluding on Thursday, July 10. — Bernama

SIBU, Aug 17 — Immediate reforms are needed to safeguard tourist safety in Sabah, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. He advised Sabah authorities to step up the necessary actions to enhance the state's tourism image. 'Following a two-day joint sea and land enforcement operation, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture held a meeting with the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and relevant enforcement agencies to address tourism safety issues, illegal operations and enforcement in Sabah. 'In that meeting, I raised several serious weaknesses regarding tourism safety in Sabah, where the safety of tourists is seen as insufficiently protected,' he said in a statement. According to him, statistics showed between 2023 and July 2025, Sabah recorded several tourism-related accidents that caused multiple deaths and injuries. 'In 2023 alone, there were 14 incidents resulting in six deaths and nine injuries; in 2024, 11 incidents with nine deaths and 28 injuries; while in 2025, up to July, there were 23 incidents with two deaths and two injuries. 'These frequent accidents highlight weak safety management and regulatory oversight, which undermine travellers' confidence and damage Sabah's international tourism reputation,' he said. Tiong said during the two-day operation, he personally led officers from the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division and Immigration Department, police and other agencies on inspections around Tawau. He said the operation revealed widespread illegal practices, including overloaded tour buses without tour guides; foreigners renting local licences and operating behind the scenes; foreign divers working illegally; non-tourism vehicles carrying passengers; and boats operating with approval. Other issues included alleged corruption in the Immigration Department, lax monitoring of resorts and homestays without insurance protection and unauthorised fee collection on certain islands. — The Borneo Post

Pesona Anggerik at Gardens by the Bay marks 60 years of Malaysia-Singapore ties
SINGAPORE (Bernama): More than 600 orchids will be showcased amidst a vibrant tapestry of Malaysian architecture, intricate handicrafts, and traditional attire at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay until Sept 7, in celebration of 60 years of Malaysia-Singapore diplomatic ties. Presented in collaboration with the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore, Pesona Anggerik: Truly Asia Orchids features over 15 genera of orchids, along with authentic crafts and artefacts such as Kelantan's moon kite, Pahang textiles, Sabah's woven baskets and tribal headwear, and Sarawak's traditional Orang Ulu attire. Gardens by the Bay chief executive officer Felix Loh said one of the highlights includes the lady's slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum Maudiae), a hybrid descended from species native to northern Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, known for its distinctive slipper-shaped pouch. "Treasured for its mottled foliage and striking green or burgundy blooms, it reflects the richness of Malaysia's botanical heritage. "Equally precious are the traditional crafts and artefacts sourced by the Malaysian High Commission from across the country, which add cultural depth to this display,' he said at the launch on Friday. High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore, Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, said the event commemorates the strong and enduring relationship between the two neighbouring countries, which have stood side by side through times of change and challenge. Aerotrain to undergo overnight works for 2 weeks to enhance performance
The new Aerotrain service, which was relaunched on July 1, has transported more than two million passengers, logged more than 1,100 service hours, and completed 18,800 trips, according to MAHB. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : KLIA will be carrying out scheduled overnight works on its Aerotrain system for two weeks beginning on Aug 18 to enhance its performance. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the works will take place daily from midnight to 5am to minimise passenger disruption, Bernama reported. 'During this period, the Aerotrain service will be temporarily unavailable, and airside shuttle buses will be provided to maintain seamless connectivity between the main terminal building and the satellite building,' MAHB said. It advised travellers to follow the airport signage and guidance from on-ground personnel. KLIA managing director Izani Ghani said the maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to fine-tune the system using real-time data since its launch. 'These scheduled works are essential to ensure optimal system responsiveness, safety and long-term reliability,' he said. He said KLIA is also introducing technical upgrades, including a new automatic vehicle wash plant on the Aerotrain track, replacing the previous manual washing method. Since its launch on July 1, the Aerotrain has transported more than two million passengers, logged more than 1,100 service hours, and completed 18,800 trips. It has faced some minor service disruptions recently because of technical glitches and water ponding after heavy rain, but these were resolved without major breakdowns.
