Two ‘electrocuted' to death, 5 injured in Barabanki temple
When the injured were being rushed to hospital, the rumour of electrocution caused a stampede-like situation with people running out of the temple, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Ramesh Kumar, 28, and Prashant Kumar, 17.
The incident occurred at the Awsaneshwar temple when a wire broke off and fell on the temple's tin shed, under which a crowd of devotees had assembled to offer 'jal abhishek' (offering water and milk to Shivlinga) at 2.30 am, the administration said in a statement.
The wire, which was used for lighting inside the temple, broke off after a group of monkeys jumped on it, the officials said.
Barabanki District Magistrate (DM) Shashank Tripathi told The Indian Express, 'The autopsy confirmed that the two deaths were caused due to electrocution. The cremation of the two victims was held in the afternoon at their villages.'
'Both Ramesh Kumar and Prashant Kumar belonged to the Haidergarh area of the district. The Chief Minister has announced Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of both the deceased,' Tripathi added.
Tripathi said a spot verification was done and there was no need for an investigation since there was no negligence behind the incident.
'This is a Shiva temple and devotees from nearby areas had started gathering since night for the 'jal abhishek'. The queue of the devotees was moving in and out of the temple when monkeys suddenly started jumping on the tin shed while hanging on the wires. A wire fell on the shed and two of the visitors came in contact with the shed. Five others close to them also suffered electric shocks,' Tripathi said.
DM Tripathi said the two electrocuted were declared dead at the hospital while five others were discharged after the treatment. 'There was no law and order problem after the incident and devotees have been visiting the temple throughout the day since early morning,' he added.
The Awasaneshwar is another prominent temple in Barabanki after Lodheshwar temple of Lord Shiva where kanwariyas offer 'sacred water' brought from nearby districts.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event, DGP Rajeev Krishna said senior officials, including the zonal and range-level officers, visited the spot. 'Two people unfortunately died in the incident, which was caused due to electrocution and not because of any stampede. Almost all of the injured have been discharged from hospital after treatment. Some are under observation,' he said.
Expressing 'deep sorrow' over the loss of lives, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his condolences to the bereaved families. 'He (CM) has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations,' Adityanath's office posted on X in Hindi.
Meanwhile, the Opposition parties demanded compensation for the victims.
The Samajwadi Party posted on X, 'The government should give a compensation of Rs 1 crore each to the families of the deceased devotees, ensure proper treatment and compensation for those injured and disclose the correct number of deaths.' The UP Congress described the incident as 'extremely tragic'.
'The news of the death of two devotees due to an electric shock and several others being injured is distressing. We express our deep condolences to the grieving families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,' it posted on X.
'This incident points to serious deficiencies in the arrangements. Robust security and crowd management measures are extremely necessary at religious sites. We demand that the government provide appropriate compensation and all possible assistance to the affected families,' the Congress state unit said.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Sun, the family head, died in March 2025. Before his death, he transferred ownership of the Rs 3.6 crore property solely to his son. Mr Sun also instructed his son to provide "reasonable compensation" to his daughter, who was adopted by him and his wife in 1966. "Our daughter is adopted, but we have always treated her as our own. In our later years, it was our son who took care of us. We gave the house to him, and he intends to compensate his sister. We hope you two can get along like true siblings," the statement read. The adopted daughter protested against the decision, arguing that the property transfer contract bore only the father's signature, implying that her mother's share should still be included in the estate. "Since the contract was signed only by him, my mother's share should be treated as part of the inheritance. This house was given to me by my parents, no one is taking it from me," she said. The dispute then turned into a legal battle at the Nankai District People's Court in Tianjin. In the court, the sister presented new evidence claiming that her brother's household registration documents were marked "adopted", proving he was not a biological child. The settlement Soon after the revelation, the brother broke down in the court but insisted that his sister had not been in the family picture since the 1990s. As per him, a property dispute decades ago led to his sister severing ties with the family, leaving him to take care of their parents until their deaths. Cop loses Rs 7.5 lakh after clicking link on police-citizen WhatsApp group
A Mumbai Police constable was duped of Rs 7.5 lakh after he clicked on a link shared on a WhatsApp group of a local mohalla committee, police said Tuesday. According to police, the unidentified accused used details of constable Sachin Kashid to take a bank loan worth Rs 7.5 lakh which was later transferred from his account. An officer said that, prima facie, it appears that clicking on the link gives fraudsters access to the phone and they use WhatsApp to share it to dupe people. Kashid, a constable posted at Trombay Police Station, in his statement said that the fraud took place on July 22, while he was on duty. According to the complaint, a file named 'RTO was shared in the 'Mohalla Committee Trombay' WhatsApp group. WhatsApp groups of mohalla committees, in which police personnel and local residents are members, are used by Mumbai police to interact with citizens. The file appeared to have been shared by a member in the afternoon, which was clicked by Kashid. However, it did not open following which he went back to his work and did not check his phone. At 5:53 pm, Kashid received a message notifying him that a loan of Rs 7.58 lakh had been deposited into his salary account. Moments later, he noticed two unauthorised transactions that transferred the money to some other account. When Kashid called the person who shared the link, he found that the malicious software had been uploaded on the latter's phone and he was unaware that the link had been shared in the WhatsApp group. Kashid then called up cyber helpline number 1930 and an FIR was registered at the Trombay police station.
