A new name for the Cardiff City manager has shot to the top of the bookmakers' odds list in the form of former Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt.
The former defender, 43, transitioned from a successful playing career to management, making significant impacts at both Barrow and Bolton. Evatt began his managerial journey with Barrow in 2018, leading them to promotion to the English Football League in the 2019/20 season — the club's first in 48 years. His attacking philosophy earned the team the nickname "Barrowcelona."
In July 2020, Evatt took the helm at Bolton, then struggling in League Two and secured automatic promotion in his first season.
Under his guidance, Bolton won the EFL Trophy in 2023 with a 4–0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley. He also led the team to the League One play-off final in the 2023/24 season. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community
Over his tenure at Bolton, Evatt managed 261 games, achieving 132 wins, 52 draws, and 77 losses — a win rate of approximately 50%. His tenure concluded in January 2025 following a series of underwhelming performances.
Cardiff are currently deep in the process of hiring a new manager. Chairman Mehmet Dalman last week hoped they would have a new man in place by the end of the month.

Indeed, Dalman hoped that he and the board would have a shortlist by this week and it is understood around 10 names have been placed on that list for interview and board consideration.
Sources have also claimed that owner Vincent Tan has now steered away from a desire to appoint young, unproven managers after the catastrophic relegation suffered on Omer Riza's watch last season. Of course, the early-season disaster under Erol Bulut should not be wholly discounted in that.
However it seems that there is now a necessary criteria of previous managerial experience, preferably in English football, and ideally a promotion on the CV of any would-be City manager.
The shortlist has been drawn up by a subcommittee comprising Gavin Chesterfield, the head of the academy, Mark Allen, former Swansea and Rangers sporting director, and a representative from Wasserman, the sporting agency tasked with helping to lead this search.
It is understood more than one candidate has already been spoken to as the board begin their interview process before presenting their final recommendation to the owner.
Evatt's name tops the bookies' odds above former Oxford United manager Des Buckingham, who oversaw the U's promotion from League One a year ago. Steven Gerrard also shot up the list after supporters cottoned on to him being a Wasserman client and having worked with Allen at Rangers and Saudi club Al Ettifaq recently.

Aaron Ramsey remains at 16/1 and might be an outlier in terms of convincing Tan that an unproven manager can handle the job. However, should Ramsey continue playing, as he has reiterated his desire to do, then it would likely rule him out of contention. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Crusaders' coach Carl makes another case for the defence
The second half of the League One season gets underway on Sunday as Crusaders, the league leaders, host second-placed Midlands Hurricanes. Following the first nine games of the campaign, North Wales boast the most potent attack, while 104 points conceded means they have the best defence. Head coach Forster told CruCast: 'Defence wins games, that's the common phrase said. But, we've really prided ourselves on our defence this year. 'We've been giving ourselves a number on an average defence what wins you a league and, at the minute, we're well under that and, obviously, we just want to stay on track on that, and it's just a sort of reminder in the middle of a game that this particular number, that we pass the message on and it kind of just gives the lads that little bit of head space to switch on and we just never want to surpass that number. 'I think we've done it twice this year in nine games where they've got past that number. So, I think that speaks volumes in terms of how good we've been without the ball.'

St Mirren consider swoop for keeper who played for Premiership rivals last season to be their new No1
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ST MIRREN are considering a swoop for Swansea City keeper Andy Fisher. The Buddies were hoping to persuade Middlesborough shot-stopper Zach Hemming to return to Paisley on a permanent deal after two successful loan stints. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Andy Fisher in action for St Johnstone last season Credit: Kenny Ramsay But as SunSport revealed yesterday, Hemming has agreed to move to English League Two outfit Chesterfield after the clubs agreed a £150,000 deal. Now the Saints have had to turn to a list of other potential new number one targets. And SunSport understands Fisher, who spent the second half of last season on loan with relegated St Johnstone, is high on their wishlist. The 27-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Blackburn Rovers, joined new Rangers boss Russell Martin at Swansea on a four-year deal from MK Dons back in January 2022. With just six months now left on his contract, St Mirren are hoping they can persuade the English goalie, who made 18 appearances in Perth, to make an immediate switch to the Paisley club. The Buddies are also confident they will be able to announce the signing of Richard King in the near future. The Jamaican international has been busy representing his country in crucial World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala and the British Virgin Islands. While the 23-year-old still has three Concacaf Gold Cup group stage matches to tackle later this month, Saints don't foresee any issues with getting international clearance for the highly-rated Cavalier stopper once those games are completed. King will help to fill the gap left by Richard Taylor, who let his contract run down at the end of the season. The 24-year-old defender remains in the hunt for a new club. St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson on being wanted by Alex Ferguson & Graeme Souness and having a BOMB under his car Elsewhere, Premiership champions Celtic have been granted permission to open talks with top transfer target Benjamin Nygren. SunSport revealed earlier this week that the £2million Nordsjaelland attacker was on Brendan Rodgers' wishlist. The Hoops have now made a move but face some stiff competition in the race for the 23-year-old's signature from clubs in the Bundesliga and MLS.
