Tree fall backs up traffic for 2 hours on Valpoi-Ponda road
Valpoi: A mango tree came crashing down on the Valpoi-Ponda road at Savarshe, Valpoi, on Monday morning, disrupting rush hour traffic for over two hours and resulting in a major snarl. Station officer of the Ponda central fire station, Sushil Moraskar, said the woman, who was found to be stable upon being rescued, survived because of the ropes tied to the suction heads of three water pumps submerged in the well. 'When emergency services personnel approached her, she was found holding on to the ropes to keep herself afloat inside the well that was half full with rainwater,' Moraskar said. School van falls into ditch; 31 kids injured
T'puram: A private van carrying children to St Shantal English Medium School plunged into a roadside ditch at Malamukal in Vattiyoorkavu on Monday morning. The van lost control while reversing on a narrow stretch, overturned and fell into the nearby ditch. However, 31 students and a teacher who were onboard all escaped with minor injuries. They sought treatment at a private hospital in Sasthamangalam. General education minister V Sivankutty, accompanied by Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth, visited the hospital to check on the injured. The minister promised safety measures to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing that "it was a close call and it could have been much worse." A teacher at the scene attributed the mishap to poor road conditions and absence of safety handrails. Locals echoed these concerns, pointing out that private vehicles drop off students on the roadside rather than entering the school premises. Eyewitnesses say the van lost control while reversing and subsequently slid into the ditch. Teen felicitated for saving 2 from drowning
1 2 Rourkela: A 14-year-old boy, who saved the lives of two youths from drowning four days back, was felicitated by NIT Rourkela Alumni Association (NITRAA) on the occasion of Independence Day. On Wednesday, around 2 pm, three youths went to Deo to take a bath. A fisherman advised them not to go into the river, but they didn't listen. As the trio went further into the river, they started drowning. Saban Bhumij, who had gone to the river after school to take a bath, saw the youths drowning. The Class VIII student, who was an expert swimmer, jumped into the river. He reached the two youths and dragged them to the shore. However, he couldn't save the third. On Thursday, the body of the third was recovered from the river. Saban bravery was lauded at different quarters resulting in NITRAA felicitating him on Friday. He was given a cash award of Rs 5,000, promised a football kit and since his parents are poor, NITRAA also assured to take care of Saban's studies till he graduates.
