5 playful parenting hacks that science says builds stronger kids (Image: TOI)
They say, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and decades of research supports the same as play is not only essential for children's growth but is also considered one of the most efficient methods of education.
Who would have thought that "just playing" might appear to be a luxury for children in today's fast-paced times where screens frequently dominate and academic pressures rise. According to experts, play-based education encourages creativity, problem-solving, social skills and emotional resilience that are necessary for success throughout one's life.
Why play-based education is effective
Play is the child's natural language and research shows that when kids play, their brains are at their best for learning. The LEGO Foundation and ISSA highlight that 'when kids are playing, their brains are in prime learning mode' thanks to dopamine, the brain's pleasure chemical, which reinforces attention, memory and problem-solving abilities. Far from being frivolous, pretend play stimulates cognitive growth by encouraging children to explore different roles, imagine 'what-if' scenarios and develop self-regulation and language skills (
LEGO Foundation and ISSA, 2022
).
Want your children to build executive functions like decision-making and flexibility? A study by Jianzhong Xu and colleagues, which was published in
Frontiers in Psychology
in 2018, emphasized that play-based learning does exactly that, especially when guided by gentle adult support. Both academic success and emotional well-being depend on these. The research showed that children who engaged in playful learning environments not only performed better academically but also displayed greater motivation and persistence.

This is because when children engage in play, they are naturally in control of their activities, deciding how to interact with toys, materials or peers and this nurtures critical thinking, creativity and resilience. The study found that just as parents are encouraged to guide their children rather than dictate their homework, play-based learning invites adults to scaffold rather than lead, allowing children to encounter challenges and work through them with encouragement, not pressure.
It validated that when children have space to try, struggle and grow, whether through play or learning activities, they develop stronger cognitive and emotional skills. This is why play-based learning is not just 'fun and games', it is a powerful educational approach that builds the foundation for independent, confident learners.
Tips to apply play-based learning at home
Play-based education does not necessitate expensive toys or prearranged lessons.
It is about creating an environment where imagination and curiosity can naturally thrive.
1. Encourage child-led, unstructured play
Without strict guidelines or objectives, let your child direct playtime. As per the LEGO Foundation, unstructured play allows children to explore at their own pace and pursue their interests, resulting in greater engagement and creativity. To inspire imaginative scenarios, make play kits with straightforward props like blocks, dress-up clothes and art supplies.
2. Be a passionate sidekick rather than a director
According to
The Relation between Teachers' and Children's Playfulness: A Pilot Study
conducted by Shulamit Pinchover in 2017, it was established that adults' playfulness (where they are being spontaneous, silly and present) directly inspires children to play and be open to exploration. So, join your child in their world with genuine enthusiasm but avoid taking over. Supporting and scaffolding their learning, not directing it, is your responsibility.
2. Integrate learning into everyday activities
Simple daily tasks like cooking or gardening can be transformative learning experiences. For example, measuring ingredients while baking introduces math concepts like fractions and sequencing, all wrapped in fun and meaningful context (
Interactive Environments for Training Children's Curiosity Through Metacognitive Skills: A Pilot Study by Abdelghani, R., Law, E., Desvaux, C., Oudeyer, P.-Y. and Sauzéon, H. in 2024
).
The gap between play and real-world skills is filled by this.
4. Make use of interactive tools to pique interest
According to the pilot study conducted by Rania Abdelghani and colleagues in 2024, teaching metacognitive skills to children through animated videos and interactive activities help them ask more intelligent questions and increase their level of curiosity. By asking open-ended questions like, "What do you wonder about today?" at home, you can encourage this or "What would it be if you could invent something?"
5. Balance play with gentle guidance
Play-based learning is most effective when children feel safe and supported so, the key is to provide enough structure to encourage their progress without stifling their creativity.
This balance helps children build confidence to try new things, take risks and learn from their mistakes.

Play is learning, not merely a break from it. It shapes children's minds, develops important skills and instils a lifelong passion for discovery. Parents can raise resilient, curious and capable children who are ready to thrive in and out of the classroom by encouraging play-based learning at home. The key is not to force academic drills; rather, it is to create joyful, playful experiences that make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
So, the next time you see your child lost in play, keep in mind that they are laying the groundwork for a successful future.

Historic town hall in Mysuru deteriorates due to neglect

MYSURU: The historic Town Hall, officially known as the Sri Rangacharlu Memorial Hall, is fast deteriorating, with visible cracks and structural damage threatening its survival. Built over 90 years ago in memory of C. Rangacharlu, the celebrated Dewan of the erstwhile Mysuru State, the single-storey structure stands prominently near Mysuru Palace, yet suffers from years of neglect. Commissioned by the then Maharaja of Mysuru to honour Rangacharlu's leadership in steering the state out of crisis, the hall was once a proud cultural landmark. Its stage area, now partially supported by canopies, was notably used by many celebrities, including Mahatma Gandhi , to address a public gathering. Despite being under the care of the Mysuru City Corporation, restoration efforts were minimal. In 2014, then women and child welfare minister Umashree , during a review of Dasara cultural events, expressed strong displeasure over the hall's condition and directed officials to create permanent facilities, but no substantial action followed. The surroundings of the Town Hall are also in a horrible condition, and it seems corporation authorities are not concerned with taking up cleaning work. The place has become a site for all sorts of illegal activities. 'It's disheartening to see the Town Hall in such a pathetic state,' said Prof. N.S. Rangaraju, retired Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Mysore. 'We informed the Corporation Commissioner, who assured early repairs, but nothing was done. Such neglect of a major heritage building in the heart of the city is truly unfortunate.' Repeated appeals from heritage enthusiasts have gone unanswered, leaving the future of the Town Hall uncertain. Preservationists urge urgent restoration to safeguard this cultural landmark before its condition worsens beyond repair. Speaking to TOI, Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif said, 'The tender process is underway, and the work will be taken up at the earliest. I too felt very bad about the situation, but the repair involves a significant cost.' Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 7 expert tips to become your child's safe space

Parenting is a journey of irreparable beauty and deep challenges. As soon as you are a parent, your life is changed forever — your heart is softened, your patience is deeper and your mind more attuned. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now You are no longer living for yourself; you are caring for a small soul, moulding a life and leading it with love, dedication and boundless care. Each smile, each tear, each minor achievement is a witness to the great responsibility and boundless joys of childrearing. If you are looking for ways to become your child's 'safe space' while nurturing emotional security and attachment, John Bowlby's Attachment Theory teaches that children thrive when they perceive a caregiver as a 'secure base' — someone whom they trust to return to when exploring the world. Bowlby asserted, 'When conditions were favourable an infant moves away from mother on exploratory excursions and returns to her again from time to time. This concept of secure base is crucial for understanding how an emotionally stable person develops.' How strict parenting can impact children negatively Studies show that the Circle of Security–Parenting (COS‑P) enhances caregiver sensitivity and reflective functioning, significantly strengthening attachment security. For example, one study ( Enhancing foster care relationships through attachment-based intervention: the safe families study protocol, a randomized controlled trial of the circle of security parenting program published in BMC Psychology ) found that COS‑P led to 'a significant reduction in insensitive maternal behaviours' and another documented improvements in reflective functioning among mothers. Tips to connect with your child: Here are parenting rules that build unbreakable bonds (Image: TOI) A deeper understanding of your child's inner world — termed reflective functioning — is central to becoming a consistent, emotionally supportive presence. Research paper Parent-Child Attachment: A Principle-Based Concept Analysis demonstrates that maternal sensitivity or accurately perceiving and responding to a child's signals, is strongly linked to secure attachment. It also emphasised that parents with high reflective capacity are more emotionally attuned, which supports healthier development. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In an interview with TOI, Yukta Sharma, Parenting Enthusiast and New Mom Mentor, suggested the following foundational and actionable ways to become your child's safe - Bond with your kids emotionally Through emotional bonding, your child feels most secure in their mental health. When your child feels emotionally close to you, they trust you and are comfortable sharing anything with you. Listen to your child First of all, listen to your child without interrupting. Whatever they tell you is wrong or right, hear them out completely. Don't lash out instantly—keep calm and empathetic. It is the key to being your child's best friend. Provide peaceful environment at home Every parent needs these powerful truths about raising emotionally secure kids (Image: iStock) Provide a peaceful environment at home. Peace starts with a clear mind, so be cautious about what you do in front of your children. Talk nicely and softly to your spouse in front of them, because child often learn and copy what they see. Have fun playing indoor and outdoor games together with your child Not only does physical activity help to keep their minds healthy, but it brings you closer to them, forms happy memories. Establish daily routines and rules When children know what is going on every day, they are safe and secure. Stability keeps their stress away and anxiety at bay. Encourage your child Praise your child and encourage your child occasionally. A word of appreciation or a word of praise can boost their confidence, make them feel happy, and motivate them to do even better. Do not compare your child to others Comparing them or lecturing them for grades or other accomplishments makes them feel less than others. Comparing them can make an everlasting mark by deflating their confidence because what they learn as a kid stays with them for life. These are some of the most important parenting behaviours that are also essential to the mental well-being of a child. You are a different you at every stage of your child's life hence, evolving to what you see is optimum for them. Ultimately, every parent wants to give their child the best — in feelings, love, values and learning.

Bagina offerings to River Krishna on hold despite Almatti reservoir being full

Pic: A recent pic of the CM and the deputy CM offering bagina at KRS dam Vijayapura: The Krishna basin has seen heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka since May. Coordinated action by govt departments has prevented floods and crop loss. The Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir at Almatti has been nearly full for a month now, but locals feel the govt has neglected the ritual of offering 'bagina' to the river, amid political distractions. They hope the CM will do it after the assembly session. GC Muttaladinni, convenor of the Krishna Teera Mulugade Santrastara Kshemabhivruddhi Samsthe, Vijayapura, told TOI that it has been an annual tradition to offer bagina to the River Krishna, which has been the lifeline of the North Karnataka region. "This year, the region is receiving good rainfall and water from Maharashtra from May itself, and Almatti dam has been almost full for a month. Hence, the programme should be conducted now, considering the situation," he pressed. Sources in Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited (KBJNL) Almatti dam division stated that inflow started from May 19 this year. "We ensured smooth handling, averting flood and crop loss in coordination with district administrations and line departments. Now we are releasing water to the river to maintain the dam. If this outflow is withheld, the dam will be full within a few hours," they stated. Aravind Kulkarni, state secretary of Akhanda Karnataka Raita Sangha, Vijayapura, noted that stepmotherly treatment prevails towards the River Krishna for decades. "The govt offered bagina to Krishnarajasagar (KRS) in June itself. But it is inactive about River Krishna. Elected representatives of the region are also silent. Almatti dam is Asia's second-largest, four times bigger than KRS. The govt is enthusiastic to hold Cauvery Arathi, but it is blind towards the demand for Krishna Arathi," he lamented. Mohan Raj KP, managing director of KBJNL, Bengaluru, confirmed that the dam is 100% full. "We normally hold the bagina offering programme in Aug and sometimes in Sept. Since it's still raining in the river basin, we have deferred it. Once the weather clears, we will seek a date from the govt and organise it," he assured.
