Jess Glynne 'sickened' by White House using viral Jet 2 holiday song in deportation video
Jess Glynne had spoken out after discovering her hit single Hold My Hand was used in a White House video promoting ICE deportations, calling the move 'sick' and a complete misuse of her music, which she says is meant to bring people together not divide them.
The video was posted on X by the official White House account earlier this week. The video features a montage of immigration detainees in hand and leg cuffs being escorted by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers onto a GlobalX flight.
The video was accompanied by the caption: "When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!"
Over the footage plays the now viral Jet2holiday advert, which features Jess' 2015 feel good anthem Hold My Hand alongside the chipper voiceover declaring "nothing beats a Jet2 holiday". Additionally the video features a clip of President Donald Trump giving a thumbs up, and a screenshot of an app which offers American immigrants the option to self-deport.
The singer caught wind of the White House's post early on Wednesday morning and was quick to condemn the use of her song in the video.
Sharing her reaction on Instagram Stories, Jess wrote: "This post honestly makes me sick. My music is about love, unity and spreading positivity - never about division or hate."
The track's use comes as part of a wider meme trend that has exploded on TikTok in recent months. The Jet2holiday jingle and voiceover have been paired with everything from clumsy falls to hilarious stunts, often used in a comedic way. With over 71,000 TikTok posts featuring the audio, the trend had remained largely lighthearted, until now.
The video has gained widespread criticism online, with many social media users expressing outrage at the White House.
One expressed: "This is gross. Completely disgusting."
As another simply stated: "Oh," along with multiple shocked emojis. Others have slammed the White House for ruining the trend, as one user wrote: "Just like that the trend is over."
A fourth user branded the account as the worst on the site, saying: "There is no bigger as****e on this site than this account." One comment read: "This shows a real lack of humanity."
Despite the backlash, the Trump administration, which returned to power earlier this year, appears unfazed. In a statement to The Independent, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson doubled down on the X post.
"There is nothing more unifying and positive than deporting criminal illegal aliens and making American communities safer," Jackson said. "The memes will continue until every criminal illegal alien is removed!"

Netflix fans have been left in tears after watching The Iron Claw on Netflix, which stars Zac Efron in a role that is worlds away from the Disney Channel film that made him famous Netflix fans have been left in tears after The Iron Claw made its debut on Netflix. The 2023 film stars Zac Efron as wrestling legend Kevin Von Erich, and was released on the streaming platform on Friday, almost two years on from when it first came out in cinemas. The film charts lives of the Von Erich brothers and their careers, and High School Musical star Zac, 37, stars alongside the likes of Jeremy Allen White, Harrison Dickinson, Lily James and Maura Tierney. A synopsis for the sports drama reads: "The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s." Critics were immediately grabbed by the film's premise, with Rolling Stone's David Fear writing: "It's a messy movie about messy lives, occasionally in ways you wish it wasn't. "The simplest way to get to Newquay using CrossCountry services is to change at Plymouth station. "From Newquay station, shuttles run to the festival every fifteen minutes on Wednesday, August 6. "Using the CrossCountry network, we expect Plymouth station to be the busiest connecting station. "We expect festival attendees to be travelling through Plymouth on Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7, and again on Monday, August 11, when passengers are travelling home. "If you are travelling around Plymouth on these days, services may be slightly busier than usual."
