Streaming surpasses broadcast and cable TV viewing in US for first time

, which have been steadily gaining in popularity, have finally dethroned broadcast and cable television in the U.S., winning more viewers in May than broadcast and cable combined, audience measurement firm Nielsen reported on Tuesday.
Nielsen, in its monthly report The Gauge, said streaming captured 44.8% of total TV usage in the U.S. in May, highlighting the growing dominance of streaming platforms like
YouTube
and
Netflix
over the past four years.
Google's YouTube alone accounted for 12.5% of all television viewing in May, representing the largest audience share for a streaming service. Free ad-supported streaming services, such as Paramount Global's PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Fox's Tubi, also have gained popularity, collectively capturing 5.7% of TV viewership, Nielsen reported.
Broadcast accounted for 20% of TV viewership in May, while cable accounted for 24%, Nielsen said.
The rise of streaming, which received a big boost during the COVID pandemic when people were forced to seek entertainment at home, reflects the broader transformation in media consumption, as viewers increasingly favor on-demand content over traditional TV schedules. The trend is reshaping the television landscape, with implications for advertisers and content creators alike.

Long before Rang De Basanti became the pop-culture juggernaut it is today, with Aamir Khan 's DJ rallying a generation against corruption and injustice, the film was doing the rounds in tattered scripts and living out of screenwriter Kamlesh Pandey 's bag for six long years. And in those years, it wasn't just a story that evolved — the imagination of Bollywood producers went absolutely rogue. Appearing on Ravya Sarda's YouTube show, Pandey unspooled the behind-the-scenes saga of Rang De Basanti — a story of missed chances, wrong guesses, and a colossal misunderstanding that might just make you spit out your chai. Manoj Bajpayee as DJ? Yes. Aamir Khan? Eventually. For starters, the role of DJ — eventually immortalised by Aamir Khan — wasn't originally meant for him at all. 'We had signed Manoj Bajpayee,' Pandey revealed, explaining that the initial vision was for a modestly budgeted film with strong performances. It was only when Aamir read the script and showed instant interest that things began to change. He not only jumped aboard but brought AR Rahman along with him. Suddenly, UTV — which had rejected the script twice — did a full U-turn and greenlit the film. Sometimes, all it takes is one Aamir and one Rahman. From DJ to Basanti: A Producer's Wild Ride But perhaps the most hilariously bizarre detour came from producers who completely misunderstood the film's concept. 'They thought it was a Sholay remake from Basanti's point of view,' Pandey recalled, barely hiding his exasperation. And the moment you think this can't get any more absurd, it does. 'They would ask, 'Who's playing Basanti?' And I'd reply with a straight face, 'We're thinking of casting Esha Deol .' They would take it seriously!' Pandey said, laughing. 'I didn't know whether to slap them or ignore them.' Randeep Hooda's Regret The story of casting mishaps doesn't end there. Randeep Hooda was originally considered for the role of Karan (Bhagat Singh), but he backed out. Why? On a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, Hooda candidly confessed that he didn't want to 'play second fiddle to Aamir.' He also admitted his 'Jaat akad' lost him another major role in Rock On too. That role eventually went to Siddharth, who — alongside Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, and Atul Kulkarni — completed the now-iconic ensemble cast. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and buoyed by the sheer power of great music, bold writing, and a call for national awakening, Rang De Basanti became more than just a movie. It was a movement. Armaan Mallik's new song Baari Baari is a groovy Hindi-Punjabi pop track
'People think that I only sing romantic songs, but I have a lot more to offer musically and creatively. I wanted to take a very unconventional approach to my music, and I think that is what we have channelled for this song,' says singer Armaan Mallik, who is stepping out of his romance era for his next single 'Baari Baari'. Released on June 18, the song is composed by his brother and long-time collaborator, Amaal Mallik, and lyrics were written by singer-songwriter Youngveer. Armaan and his brother Amaal have collaborated on other hit numbers such as 'Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon', 'Bol Do Na Zara', 'Naina' and more. 'We both know each other's taste so well, that we are synced now whenever we come into a room to make a song. He knows exactly what I would love to sing, and I know exactly the zone that he is going to create,' says Armaan about their collaboration. 'I think we both complete each other's sentences in a way. If I start the line he completes it or if he starts the line, I complete it,' he says. 'Baari Baari' has a groovy, relaxed vibe that dabbles in Hindi and Punjabi. 'My brief was simple. I wanted Punjabi that is consumable and can be understood by everyone in the country. As we were building the song we thought that a Hindi-Punjabi fusion would be the best fit,' he adds over a phone call from Delhi. Unlike an album, which often involves a larger concept and longer timelines, 'Baari Baari' was created as a standalone single with a more focussed approach. 'With a single, the advantage is that you are focussed on one song and making sure it is the best it can be,' says Armaan. 'An album is a journey. It has a theme, takes time, and there are many moving parts. A single like 'Baari Baari' is laser-focussed on its sound and vibe.' Though the song was recorded a year ago, he adds, they waited for the right moment to release it. Remarkably, the final version retains the original one-take demo vocal recorded during the song's early stages. While 'Baari Baari' marks a fresh chapter in his independent music journey, Armaan hints at more releases in the pipeline. 'There is a lot of amazing music coming after this,' he says, adding that fans can expect a new track around his birthday on July 22. He is also working on a few English pop songs that have been in the vault for some time, and plans to take them to the stage later this year as part of a multi-city tour. Even as he builds his catalogue of pop-driven melodies, Armaan is not afraid to push the envelope. 'Something I have not really put out there is me rapping,' he says with a laugh. 'I think it would definitely surprise a lot of people.' A possible rap-electronic fusion is something he is keen to experiment with. 'Everyone expects the love songs, but no one would probably expect me to do a rap track — hopefully that will be really interesting,' he concludes.
