New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the fire department will soon be equipped with advanced tools and technology.
'With these systems, not only will the lives of fire personnel be better protected, but rapid response will also be possible. These advanced machines will make the Delhi Fire Service more capable and safer,' she said.
In congested and narrow lanes, where fire incidents are more frequent, robotic fire-fighting systems will be extremely effective and significantly reduce the risk to the lives of fire personnel, she said.
Gupta assured the Delhi Fire Service will be equipped with water bowsers, high-tech fire towers, Hazmat vans, drones, and aerial ladder platforms.
She highlighted that a separate budget of Rs 110 crore has been allocated this year for the procurement of modern firefighting equipment.
The fire-fighting infrastructure inherited from previous governments was in a severely dilapidated state, which led to numerous fire incidents in the city where fire personnel were unable to respond effectively, she said. PTI SLB RHL

Why rumblings over ‘dummy CM Mann' are growing louder within Punjab AAP?
The discontent within the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab seems to be growing with a section of its leaders accusing their Delhi leadership of 'parachuting' some of their close aides into several government or party positions in the state. The rifts in the AAP have widened ahead of the crucial June 19 Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll. On Sunday, the AAP leadership removed Priti Malhotra as the Punjab party unit's women wing chief, appointing MLA Amandeep Kaur in her place. 'People from Delhi are calling the shots. Now, even we have started feeling that Chief Minster Bhagwant Mann is a dummy CM. If the situation prevails… the party will become history,' said Priti, who led a protest on Monday against 'Delhi (AAP leadership)'s interference' in the affairs of the Punjab party unit. The AAP leadership's action against Priti came days after she launched a campaign, called 'Yudh Delhi virudh (battle against the Delhi AAP leadership)', after the Mann government appointed Reena Gupta, the Delhi-based AAP national spokesperson, as the Punjab Pollution Control Board chairperson last month, which is among several similar appointments done recently. The AAP, however, seems to be unfazed with a state party leader saying 'it was good that Priti Malhotra was removed from her post'. 'When did you ever see her working?' he asked. A day after Priti's removal, the AAP's Dibra block president Inderjit Singh Moudgill also quit in protest against the party's policies. 'We have worked hard for the AAP and spent around Rs 10 lakh from my pocket to strengthen the party. However, a senior AAP leader, who requested anonymity, said national parties like the Congress and the BJP have always named their Punjab unit in-charges from other states too. 'Do they call them parachutes? When AAP appoints such office-bearers, it becomes a controversy.' Another senior AAP leader of AAP said all those being appointed were not 'outsiders'. 'We are better than former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who brought a gangster like Mukhtar Ansari to Punjab. We have brought able people, who will help the state with their expertise. Gupta is an expert on environment while Chouhan has been actively involved in Punjab politics for many years,' the leader added. The brewing dissent has also forced the AAP's social media wing to mount a damage control exercise. On Monday, AAP social media volunteers from the Malwa East zone gathered in Patiala to discuss the issue. According to party sources, a comprehensive strategy was formulated to 'counter the Opposition's false narrative while spreading the party's ideology among people through social media'. 'Training on modern tools and social media platforms was provided to the volunteers during the meeting. The Punjab leadership has issued clear instructions to propagate the state government's welfare initiatives on social media and counter the Opposition only with facts,' a source said.

For ‘free Thailand trip', 3 women agreed to smuggle marijuana worth Rs 8.5 crore to India; arrested at Mumbai airport
Customs officers at the Mumbai international airport Tuesday arrested three women who were allegedly smuggling hydroponic weed or marijuana worth Rs 8.5 crore. During questioning, two of the women reportedly said they agreed to smuggle the contraband as they wanted a free trip to Thailand. The accused have been identified as Delhi resident Priyanka Kumar, 44; Ishika Kaltari, 19, from Bhopa in Madhya Pradesh; and Asma Bano Rajab, who is in her early 40s and hails from Gujarat. While 3.24 kg of hydroponic weed was seized from Priyanka, 3.52 kg was recovered from Ishika and 1.86 kg from Asma, sources said. Hydroponically grown marijuana or weed is a highly potent variant and is much more expensive. According to the sources, the Customs department received information that a large amount of drugs would be smuggled to India from Bangkok via Mumbai airport. Based on the inputs, officers laid a trap at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Two of the passengers arrived by flight number SL218 on Tuesday, and one passenger arrived by flight number VZ 760 from Bangkok, sources said. They were intercepted by Customs officers at the airport. Upon questioning, they exhibited signs of nervousness and uneasiness. Examination of their baggage subsequently led to the recovery of high-quality hydroponic weed worth Rs 8.5 crore, the officers said. Asma, a beauty salon employee who had stopped working due certain health complications, said she was promised a commission of Rs 15,000 for the task, and was supposed to deliver the contraband to a person in Surat, the source added. An operator from Brazil is suspected to be behind this smuggling attempt, another source said. One of the arrested accused also had the contact number of a Brazilian woman, and it is suspected that she supplied the marijuana. The three accused women were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for smuggling commercial quantities of marijuana. Further investigation is underway.
