Cardinals blank Padres 3-0; benches clear after Contreras hit by pitch
Miles Mikolas (6-7) pitched into the sixth inning, allowing seven hits but no runs to pick up just his second win since May 23. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
Padres starter Nick Pivetta (10-3) sustained his first loss since May 11. The 32-year-old, who in his first year in San Diego and having a career year, gave up three runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Padres had 11 hits and stranded nine in their fourth consecutive loss.
The Cardinals scored a run in the second without a hit. Contreras was hit by a fastball and barked at Pivetta as he went to first with catcher Elias Díaz walking between them.
Both benches and bullpens rushed onto the field but it quickly fizzled and the teams were given warnings.
Nolan Arenado reached on an error by Jake Cronenworth, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and Yohel Pozo hit a grounder to shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who lost his balance and had to throw to first, allowing Contreras to score.
Winn's two-run double in the fourth extended the Cardinals lead to 3-0.

In the fourth inning with two on and no outs, San Diego's Gavin Sheets hit a fly to deep right. Jackson Merrill tagged and went to third. Bogaerts tried to go to second but Jordan Walker threw to the cutoff man and Bogaerts was easily out for a double play. Mikolas then struck out Cronenworth to escape the jam.

Katie Ledecky among four gold-medal favorites for the Americans on Day 3 at swim worlds
SINGAPORE (AP) — Katie Ledecky leads the Americans on Tuesday at the swimming world championships, where the United States is the gold-medal favorite in four of the five finals on Day 3. The Americans have one gold from the first two days of the meet, clearly slowed by what team officials call 'acute gastroenteritis' picked up at a training camp in Thailand. But symptoms have faded and results seem sure to follow in Singapore. Ledecky goes in the 1,500-meter freestyle where she is virtually unbeatable. She holds the world record — 15 minutes, 20.48 seconds — and swam the second-fastest time in history earlier this year — 15:24.51. She's the most decorated female swimmer in history — 14 medals in the Olympics and 27 in the worlds and counting. Of those 41, 30 are gold. But there's more than Ledecky. Luke Hobson has the top qualifying time in the 200 freestyle. He was the bronze medalist a year ago in Paris. The field is bunched including Paris Olympic champion David Popovici of Romania. Pan Zhanle of China, who set a world record a year ago in Paris in the 100, missed qualifying for the 200. He was 22nd in qualifying, almost three seconds behind the top qualifiers. Another American, Regan Smith, faces off with Kaylee McKeown of Australia in one of swimming's best rivalries. Smith holds the world record (57.13). McKeown took gold in Paris, pushing Smith to silver. The fourth gold-medal shot is with Kate Douglass in the 100 breaststroke. The gold medalist in the 200 in Paris, Douglass goes for gold in the shorter distance. Lilly King, who holds the world record (1:04.13) failed to qualify. Anita Bottazzo of Italy and Tang Qianting of China are in the chase. The fifth final is fast and close in the men's 100 backstroke with Hubert Kós of Hungary — he trains at the University of Texas at Austin — the top qualifier. Summer McIntosh, the 18-year-old Canadian swimmer who is aiming for five individual gold medals in Singapore, won the 200-meter individual medley on Monday after winning the 400 freestyle title on Sunday. McCutchen's homer sends Pirates to 6-5 win on night of Giants' top pitching prospect's debut
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat San Francisco 6-5 Monday night for their third straight win on a night when Giants top pitching prospect Carson Wisenhunt made his major league debut. McCutchen's 10th homer this season and 329th of his career put the Pirates in front 6-4 in the seventh. Wisenhunt gave up a homer to the third batter he faced, NIck Gonzales, and three more runs in the second but then finished with three scoreless innings before departing after the fifth with the score tied 4-4. The 24-year-old left-hander gave up five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run double then scored on Tommy Pham's single for a 4-1 lead in the second. The Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the second and tied it game on Willy Adames' second RBI hit in the fourth. Yohan Ramírez (1-0), the third of six Pirates pitchers, got the win and David Bednar pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 17 chances this season. Mitch Keller turned in the shortest of his 22 starts this season after throwing 73 pitches over two innings. Adames had three hits for San Francisco. Carson Seymour (0-1) gave up McCutchen's homer and took the loss.
