Today in Politics: PM Modi in Tamil Nadu to inaugurate projects, honour Chola king
Most notably, on Sunday, Modi will be the chief guest at the grand finale of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival celebrating the birth anniversary of the Chola king in Tiruchirappalli, and release a commemorative coin honouring Emperor Rajendra Chola.
But the PM isn't the only leader to honour the Chola king. Already, DMK leader and Chief Minister M K Stalin has declared the emperor's birth anniversary as an official state celebration and announced several initiatives to commemorate his rule.
However, at stake is more than ritual commemoration. This moment signals an attempt to reframe Indian historical memory, with Rajendra Chola's legacy leveraged through distinct ideological lenses: Stalin's Dravidian federalism and Modi's pan-India nationalism, as reported by Arun Janardhanan.
In the lead-up to Aadi Thiruvathirai, the Tamil Nadu CM announced a Rs 19.2 crore redevelopment plan for a Chola-era reservoir: Rs 12 crore for bund strengthening, desilting of 38 km of canals, renovation of sluices, and irrigation support for seven villages. Another Rs 7.2 crore will be used for converting the area into a tourist destination, with walkways, parks, children's play areas, fencing, and CCTV surveillance.
Additionally, a museum will be built near the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple complex for Rs 22.1 crore to highlight the Chola empire's overseas trade networks, temple architecture, and cultural achievements, a continuation of the state's push to embed the Cholas into Tamil Nadu's cultural-political imagination.
The PM visit also carries its symbolic weight. On Sunday, he will unveil a commemorative coin to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Rajendra Chola's Gangetic campaign, while musician Ilaiyaraaja is set to perform a 20-minute concert. An exhibition will showcase trophies and miniature sculptures from the Chola period.
On Sunday, Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will launch a state-wide 'Bhasha Andolan (language agitation)' to protest the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states.
During the TMC's 'Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day)' rally on July 21 – held to commemorate the killing of workers of the Bengal Youth Congress, then led by Mamata, in police firing on July 21, 1993 – the CM accused the BJP of allegedly unleashing 'linguistic terrorism' against Bengalis and called for a movement against the harassment of Bengali speaking people across India.
'Bangla bhashar upor sontras cholchhe (terror is being unleashed on the Bengali language),' she said. 'Over 1,000 people detained, sent to jails in BJP-ruled states, including Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This is a conspiracy against the Bengali language. Whoever speaks Bengali is being detained in BJP-ruled states.'
Announcing the Bhasha Andolan, Mamata said, 'From July 27, we will hit the streets in protest. Every Saturday and Sunday we will protest in Bengal. I urge our MPs to protest at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Delhi. Intellectuals and sports personalities would also participate in the protest.'
The BJP, however, has claimed that the TMC is attempting to 'manufacture issues' ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Monsoon session of Delhi Assembly from August 4: School fee regulation bill on agenda—Here's what else to expect
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on July 28 issued an order for commencing the Monsoon session of Delhi Assembly from 4 August, which will be the first for Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government after forming the government in February this year. The school fee regulation bill is on the agenda when it begins. 'In exercise of the power conferred upon me by Section 6(1) of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 (Central Act No.1 of 1992), I, hereby summon the Third Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi to meet at Assembly Hall, Old Secretariat, on Monday, the August 4, 2025 at 2 p.m," he stated. The session will run for five days. It will shift to digital, with completely paper-less rollout under the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), according to officials. For that, a three-day practical training programme for MLAs kicked off on Monday, July 21, at the Vidhan Sabha Complex. A total of 18 computer systems have been installed for the sessions, with expert trainers from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs guiding legislators from July 21 to 23. The NeVA initiative is moving forward consistently and is anticipated to be finalised before the monsoon session starts. This will greatly improve the digital transformation of legislative operations, allowing smooth electronic access to parliamentary sessions and official records. 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) govt in Delhi will likely to introduce important bills and policies. One of which is Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill, 2025, officials said. The Cabinet-approved ordinance from April 29 introduces stringent penalties for schools that arbitrarily hike fees, including the potential loss of the right to propose future fee revisions. For a first offense, schools may be fined between ₹ 1 lakh and ₹ 5 lakh, while repeat violations carry increased fines ranging from ₹ 2 lakh to Rs10 lakh. If a school fails to refund the fees within the designated timeframe, the ordinance mandates that the fine will double after 20 days, triple after 40 days, and continue to rise with every additional 20-day delay. The draft also targets individuals involved in repeated violations, barring them from holding official positions within the school management. Furthermore, school management may lose their privilege to propose fee revisions going forward. 3. 'We will highlight achievements of the government in the House and raise issues related to people's welfare,' Abhay Verma, the chief whip of the ruling party, stated. Meanwhile, Aam Admi Party (AAP) MLA Atishi mentioned the parents of school children are "angry and helpless." She blamed the BJP government for "openly" aligning with private school managements while "ignoring" their "plight". She added, 'The BJP wants to avoid questions during the Assembly session' and alleged the MLAs haven't been given time to raise questions. (With inputs from PTI and IANS)

"Fabricated": Delhi Cops Reject Mamata Banerjee's Assault Claim On Bengalis
New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Monday called a video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media, alleging that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted in the national capital for speaking their language, "fabricated" and "politically motivated." Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania on Monday said that the police took immediate cognizance of the video shared on platform 'X' by the West Bengal Chief Minister, where she claimed that the woman and her child were brutally assaulted by Delhi Police personnel. Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the… — Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) July 27, 2025 "Upon inquiry, we identified the woman as Sanjanu Parveen. During questioning, she alleged that on the night of July 26, four men in plain clothes posing as police personnel took her and her child to a secluded spot and demanded Rs 25,000, which she claimed to have paid," DCP Dhania said. However, the DCP said that a detailed investigation, including analysis of CCTV footage and local intelligence, revealed inconsistencies in her story. "During sustained questioning, the woman admitted that her relative, a political worker from Malda district in West Bengal, had asked her to make the video. The video was then circulated locally in Bengal and later surfaced on social media," the officer said. Terming the video "baseless and fabricated", SCP Dhania added that the footage was deliberately created to defame the Delhi Police. "This appears to be a deliberate attempt to malign the image of Delhi Police through a politically motivated narrative. The matter is still under investigation," he said.
