
Tropical Storm Erin to become major hurricane soon: See tracker
According to a 5 a.m. ET advisory from the NHC on Aug. 13, Erin was located about 1,400 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds around 45 mph with higher gusts. Erin is currently moving west near 20 mph, and this motion is expected into Thursday, according to forecasters.
A west-northwestward motion is expected to begin Thursday night and will continue into the weekend, with the center of Erin likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.
"Gradual strengthening is forecast to begin today, and Erin will likely become a hurricane by late Thursday or early Friday," the hurricane center said in the Aug. 13 advisory. A major hurricane is a term used for cyclones rated a Category 3 or higher with sustained wind speeds over 110 mph.
Forecasters are urging interests in the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico to monitor the progress of Erin, as the storm could produce impacts on those islands this weekend. The magnitude of those impacts, however, is still not known.
Most reliable computer models that meteorologists use to forecast storms show Erin curving away from the United States, spinning off the East Coast in mid-August.
"It is too soon to discount – or pinpoint – USA landfall impacts from Erin, but based upon current model guidance – the chance RIGHT NOW is low, at less than 10%," said Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue in an email to USA TODAY Aug. 11.
WPLG-TV hurricane specialist Michael Lowry added a note of caution, telling USA TODAY that "it's worth reiterating that forecasts 5 to 10 days out are subject to large errors, so we'll need to hang tight before confidently giving the U.S. the all-clear."
However, even if Erin does avoid landfall on the United States, "there will be a significant increase in seas, surf, and rip currents along the East Coast beaches next weekend into the following week," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Chad Merrill said.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, the hurricane center said it is tracking a tropical wave over the northwestern Caribbean Sea that is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
This system is forecast to move west-northwestward and cross the Yucatan Peninsula later today with no significant increase in organization, the hurricane center said on Aug. 13. Some development of this system is possible after it emerges across the southwestern Gulf beginning Aug. 14, however the NHC gives it a 20% chance of formation through the next seven days.
Additionally, the hurricane center said a non-tropical area of low pressure located a few hundred miles southeast of Nova Scotia, Canada, is producing showers and thunderstorms.
Limited tropical or subtropical development is still possible on Aug. 13 as the system lingers near the warm waters of the Gulf Stream; however, it is forecast to move northward over cooler waters, which will diminish its chance for tropical development.
In the Pacific, Henriette has weakened into a post-tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane center forecasters said Henriette should continue to weaken and dissipate later this week.
How do hurricanes form?
Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression.
A tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reach 39 mph. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Delaying potentially lifesaving preparations could mean waiting until it's too late. "Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends.

Tropical Storm Erin has now officially become the season's first hurricane as it continues its westward push through the Atlantic, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of 8 a.m. Aug. 15, the storm was about 460 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands with sustained winds of 75 mph. It was moving west at 18 mph. The storm began a west-northwestward motion the evening of Aug. 14 and will continue that path through the weekend. The storm should gradually strengthen throughout Aug. 15 with more significant intensification Aug. 15 and 16. The hurricane is expected to pass near or north of the Leeward Islands on Aug. 16, the National Hurricane Center said. Hurricane Erin To Rapidly Strengthen This Weekend; Heavy Rain Threat In Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands
Hurricane Erin became the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season Friday morning several hundred miles east-northeast of the Caribbean, where it is expected to bring rain, gusty winds and high surf this weekend. While Erin's longer-term future after the Caribbean is still somewhat uncertain, the National Hurricane Center is forecasting rapid intensification this weekend to Category 4 strength by Sunday. Interests along the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda should continue to monitor the forecast. A significant rip current threat is expected in the week ahead from Florida to Massachusetts. (MORE: Erin Maps Tracker - Spaghetti Models, Forecasts, More) Watches And Warnings While Erin's center is forecast to pass north of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, it could track close enough for at least some tropical storm force winds in some areas. The map below shows any tropical storm watches and/or warnings in effect. Watches mean tropical storm force winds are possible, while warnings mean they are expected. There could be other impacts in these areas other than winds, as we'll detail below. Path, Intensity Forecast Erin is located a few hundred miles east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Erin has turned toward the west-northwest as it strengthens. This path will take Erin toward progressively warmer waters, which, in tandem with low wind shear, should allow Erin to become a major hurricane this weekend as its center tracks north of the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. By early next week, Erin is expected to reach sustained winds over 130 mph (Category 4 intensity), according to the National Hurricane Center. Later next week, Erin is expected to pass between North Carolina and Bermuda. Exactly where this happens remains uncertain, but Erin is expected to eventually turn northeastward to the north of Bermuda. Potential Impacts The core of Erin is expected to pass just north of the northeast Caribbean islands, but some impacts are expected this weekend from Puerto Rico to Martinique. In addition to high surf and dangerous rip currents, bands of heavy rain containing gusty winds could impact the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through this weekend. This could lead to local flash flooding and landslides where bands of heavy rain persist, particularly over mountainous terrain. Beginning Monday, Erin will begin to turn more to the north between a developing break in high pressure. Where that turn occurs between the area of high pressure over the eastern U.S. and another one east of Bermuda is still uncertain and will determine what, if any, land areas might see impacts next week. The probability of a landfall from Erin along the U.S. East Coast is very low at this time. However, interests along the East Coast should continue to monitor this system for possible changes. Erin will generate high surf and dangerous rip currents along the U.S. East Coast for several days in the week ahead, no matter where it tracks. Interests in Bermuda should also continue to follow Erin's forecast closely since its eventual turn toward the north and northeast might take it close to the archipelago next week. And parts of Atlantic Canada — particularly Newfoundland — should also follow this forecast closely, as Erin could end up tracking close to some of those areas late in the week ahead. Hurricane Erin intensifies in Atlantic, eyes Caribbean
Hurricane Erin gained strength Friday as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean and bore down on the Caribbean, where it could bring heavy rain to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that as of 0000 GMT, the storm's maximum sustained winds increased to 85 miles (137 kilometers) per hour, and was located about 310 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, an area that includes the US and British Virgin Islands. Erin, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season this year, is expected to produce heavy rain from late Friday into Sunday for those areas, the center said, warning of possible isolated and local "considerable flash and urban flooding," along with landslides or mudslides. A tropical storm watch was in effect for Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barthelmy and other islands. "Steady to rapid strengthening is expected over the next few days, and Erin is forecast to become a major hurricane during the weekend," the NHC said, with Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas on the southern edge of its projected path. The storm could drench the islands with as much as six inches (15 centimeters) of rain in isolated areas, it added. Swells fueled by Erin are expected to affect parts of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and "are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," according to the NHC. The hurricane is forecast to turn northward by late Sunday. While meteorologists have expressed confidence that Erin will remain well off the US coastline, they said the storm may still cause dangerous waves and erosion in places like North Carolina. The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June until late November, is expected to be more intense than normal, US meteorologists predict. Last year, several powerful storms wreaked havoc in the region, including Hurricane Helene, which left more than 200 people dead in the southeastern United States. As part of President Donald Trump's plans to greatly reduce the size of the federal bureaucracy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration -- which operates the NHC -- has been subject to budget cuts and layoffs, leading to fears of lapses in storm forecasting.
