Saints' Tyrann Mathieu, Jimmy Graham retire as franchise changes direction
Tyrann Mathieu, the diminutive 33-year-old safety, announced his retirement on Instagram on Tuesday in a stunning move that comes a day before the Saints open training camp.
'As I hang up my cleats, I'm filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that's shaped me in every way.' Mathieu wrote. 'From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.'

'To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined.'
Mathieu's retirement comes just a month after he addressed media at New Orleans' minicamp and not long after Kellen Moore was hired as head coach to replace the fired Dennis Allen.
'I'm a little surprised but we had some advanced notice,' Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Tuesday. 'Just have so much respect for Tyrann and what he's accomplished. I mean, he's a legendary Louisiana player, legendary NFL player. Really appreciate his time with us. He was fantastic. … What a great career.'
Mathieu also played for the Cardinals, Texans and Chiefs, racking up three first-team All-Pro selections, three Pro Bowl nods. He won a Super Bowl with Kansas City in 2019, wrapping up a 12-year NFL career that began as a third-round pick in 2013 who slid due to some behavioral issues while at LSU.

He'll have some company in the retirement ranks with legendary Saints tight end Jimmy Graham officially announcing his playing days coming to an end.
'What a journey,' Graham wrote on X following the news.
Graham hasn't suited up since 2023 in a return tour with New Orleans, the team that drafted him in 2010.
He spent the first five seasons with the Saints, establishing himself as a top-tier tight end with 4,752 yards and 51 touchdowns.
He never seemed to replicate his success in New Orleans during his subsequent stints with the Seahawks, Packers and Bears.

Micah Parsons' dad once named Chiefs, Steelers, Lions as preferred trade destinations
With Micah Parsons officially requesting a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, an old clip of his father, Terrence Parsons, talking about preferred destinations for his son in a hypothetical trade scenario has resurfaced. During an appearance on the "Life in the Stands" podcast in December 2024, Parsons' dad stated that his preferred trade landing spots for the superstar edge rusher are the Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Detroit Lions. "I know Pittsburgh fans are like, 'whoa,' but I'm sorry, him [Micah Parsons] and [T.J.] Watt together would be like cheating," Terrence Parsons said. "Him and [Aidan] Hutchinson together in Detroit would be like cheating. I love it. Kansas City, that's who they are right now." Parsons requested a trade out of Dallas due to the franchise's lack of communication with his agent. The 26-year-old's relationship with the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones seems to be completely destroyed. Dallas has no plans of trading Parsons, but if they can't agree on a long-term extension with him, they may be forced to move him at some point. Parsons' father's landing spots for the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher are bold. Adding Parsons to Kansas City's defense would be lethal, while pairing the disgruntled Cowboy with Watt or Hutchinson in Detroit would also be pretty much unstoppable. However, none of the teams Parsons' dad listed as preferred spots have the money to sign Parsons to a record-breaking extension. The Chiefs are slated to have negative $61 million in cap space next offseason, and the Steelers already have two expensive edge rushers in Watt and Alex Highsmith. As for the Lions, the team must prioritize getting an extension done with Hutchinson first, which likely takes them out of the running for Parsons. It's possible that Parsons lands with one of three destinations his dad spoke about during a podcast appearance last year, as all three franchises are playoff contenders, and two are legitimate Super Bowl contenders in Kansas City and Detroit. However, it remains to be seen whether any have the money to sign Parsons to a new deal after trading valuable picks for him while also keeping their core together. DC Council Gives Initial Approval to Commanders' New Stadium Package
On Friday, the Washington, D.C. City Council voted 9 to 3 in favor of revised legislation in support of a $3.8 billion, mixed-used stadium district, including a new stadium for the Washington Commanders, at the RFK Stadium site. A minimum of eight votes was needed to move the legislation forward. The tally came after two days of public comment and debate between councilmembers, Commanders' leadership and Washington mayor Muriel Bowser. The initial plan, which was introduced in April, would commit $1.1 billion in taxpayer funds towards the stadium's construction as well as the two parking garages that will have 8,000 spots combined. That vote will require a minimum of nine votes. 'The era of a crumbling sea of asphalt on the banks of the Anacostia is finally coming to an end,' Mayor Bowser said in a statement released after the vote. In April, Bowser, Commanders owner Josh Harris and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the team's plans to build a 65,000-seat domed stadium on the site of RFK Stadium. The new venue would be the center of a new 180-acre retail, housing and entertainment development in the southeast part of the district. The Commanders have publicly committed to $2.7 billion towards the project, but in the revised agreement, the city council was able to coax some financial concessions out of the team. The franchise agreed to hand the city $260 million in parking revenue from non-stadium event days, $112 million from parking taxes (at a 18% rate) and $54 million in sales tax receipts from merchandise. The team also agreed to give the city 10% of sales taxes from food and beverage on game days, which is estimated to run $248 million over the course of the proposed 30-year stadium lease. One other change from the original agreement seen as benefiting the city is a restructuring of debt financing by not capitalizing interest in fiscal years 2028 and 2029. The district will ideally save $55 million in the process. Finally, the proposed bill will redirect $600 million from the city's sports facility fee to a transportation redevelopment pool that will fund improvements to the Stadium-Armory Metro station at the RFK stadium site. The sports facility fee was originally designated as the 'ballpark fee,' which was created to fund the construction of Nationals Park, the home to MLB's Washington Nationals that opened in 2007. Congress is in control of the district's budget, and in the lead-up to the April announcement, several city councilmembers expressed concerns about funding a new stadium when the federal body mandated $410 million of cuts to the city's budget. Bowser dismissed the budget concerns at the time, saying, 'I call it a fake budget crisis, because we have the money. So if we have to cut services because they don't fix their snafu, that's a problem.' Prior to leaving office in January, President Donald Trump's predecessor Joe Biden approved a transfer of authority for the RFK Stadium site from the federal government to the district. While the likelihood that the bill would be rejected was small, Trump posed a potential roadblock on July 20 when he threatened to hold up the stadium deal if the team did not revert its name back its former moniker. It remains possible Trump will attempt to throw his weight against the team over this gripe. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, the president said, 'I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original… and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.' (Trump simultaneously asked that MLB's Cleveland Guardians revert their name to the 'Indians.') Valued at $6.3 billion, including real estate and corporate sponsorships, the Commanders rank 10th in Sportico's NFL franchise valuations list. Yet, the team's operating profits of $110 million in 2023 rank 22nd while its $80 million ticket revenue only paces ahead of the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals. The Commanders have played at what is now called Northwest Stadium—formerly FedEx Field—in the Maryland suburbs since 1996. With the team's least at Northwest Stadium set to expire after the 2027 NFL season, the team would need to extend the current deed before the new RFK stadium is set to open in 2030. ‘Golden Bachelor' Mel Owens confronted by contestants on show after his age remarks
Mel Owens is correcting his recent fumble. The former NFL star, 66, revealed that while filming this season of 'The Golden Bachelor,' some of the contestants confronted him for his ageist remarks. 'I hadn't dated in 26, 27 years. And at that point, I still hadn't dated, so my reference was my age, basically. That's what I told my friend.' However, Owens' pal didn't agree with the attorney. So I'm thinking that's the 'gold' years for me. My reference again was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that's why the comment. I didn't know.' And hopefully, these last two, three weeks, I earned some of that back.' After Owens' podcast appearance, fans called for the reality star to be recast.
