In the pic from We Bare Bears helmer Daniel Chong, science has found a way to 'hop' human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals, allowing people to communicate with animals as animals. Using the new technology, Mabel (Piper Curda) will uncover mysteries within the animal world that are beyond anything she could have imagined.
Mabel 'hops' into the life of a beaver, and along the way she learns about dragonfly dudes, vibing birds, 'pond rules' — eat, be eaten, make it 'weird' and get off the menu — and the potential pitfalls of upsetting the natural order.
'What if we could understand and communicate with the animal world?' Chong asks in the press notes. 'Our main character, Mabel, gets to discover the animal kingdom as an animal, which can be weird and often hilarious. Mabel undercover in the animal world leads to a wild, rollercoaster ride of a movie, with all the heart you expect from a classic Pixar film.'
The voice cast also includes the likes of Bobby Moynihan and Jon Hamm.
It's been feast or famine for Pixar during the past two years. In 2024, Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film ever, and No. 11 among all movies, with just short of $1.7 billion worldwide. But this summer's $150 million Elio drew the lowest opening in the studio's history. Hoppers is out to make amends for that when it opens March 6.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' rockets to $118 million
Disney's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' stormed the domestic box office, topping superhero competitor 'Superman' to finish No. 1 with $118 million. The reboot was a major comeback for the series, falling within range of analysts' expectations but short of a hopeful $130 million. 'Fantastic Four' is also the best-performing weekend for a Marvel film this year, easily surpassing 'Captain America: Brave New World' in February ($88.5 million) and 'Thunderbolts' in May ($74.3 million). 'This new phase for Marvel is truly important for the brand,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, adding that it 'doubles down on the 'Thunderbolts' success and is showing that audiences love going to superhero movies in the movie theater.' Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, called 'Fantastic Four' a 'zero-homework-required' release, because it stands separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's established storylines. 'That's exactly where their franchise needs to be right now, as they not only try to keep those die-hard fans but bring back some of the more casual watchers,' said Robbins. While some industry experts have said moviegoers may be experiencing 'superhero fatigue,' Daniel Loria, editorial director at BoxOffice Pro, said Marvel may be slowed by 'franchise fatigue.' Marvel Studios has released 37 movies since 'Iron Man' in 2008, with four 'Avengers' movies between 2012 and 2019 having combined to gross about $10 billion when adjusted for inflation. Perhaps adding to the Marvel fatigue was Disney releasing Marvel Cinematic Universe television series on its streaming service, which complicated the franchise, Dergarabedian said. It hasn't helped matters that since the pandemic, Marvel movies have failed to get off to a hot start, with 2024's 'Deadpool & Wolverine' ($211 million) and 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' ($260 million) being exceptions. 'So much of (the franchise) is readily available at home,' Loria said. 'I don't think 'Fantastic Four' plays into any of that. It's a fresh, new experience, and I think audiences are responding to that.' 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' should help lift the franchise after the box office disappointment of 20th Century Fox's 2015 'Fantastic Four,' which grossed just $76.3 million domestically during its entire run, adjusted for inflation. Finishing No. 2 at the domestic weekend box office was Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Superman,' which grossed nearly $25 million. 'Superman,' part of the revamped DC movie universe, has so far grossed $289.5 million since opening on July 11. Dergarabedian said that the success of this month's two superhero films shows that 'if that genre or category of film were to disappear, it'd be devastating for the industry.' Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN. Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth' came in third at the domestic box office, having grossed $13 million in its fourth week in theaters. It's grossed $301.51 million domestically so far. Robbins noted that there haven't been major examples of a DC and Marvel movie playing in theaters at the same time. He added that casual comic book fans who may normally pick one movie to see could make an exception to see both films in theaters. Loria cited a diverse slate of movies for continued moviegoing momentum. Aside from 'Superman' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' Paramount Pictures' comedy 'The Naked Gun,' which opens Friday, will open to offer 'a fresh, new genre.' This month's movie slate has lifted the box office 12.3% year-to-date compared to the same time last year, according to Comscore data. And the box office could still reach $4 billion this summer, Dergarabedian said, which would mark the second post-pandemic summer box office to reach that level. ''The Fantastic Four: First Steps' is going to fuel a very strong month of August. So what a great home stretch for the industry,' he said.

Critics once doubted James Cameron — but can Avatar: Fire and Ash prove them wrong again?
James Cameron's hugely successful film franchise will return with Avatar: Fire & Ash in December. Avatar will soon return with the third chapter in its epic, otherworldly story in Fire and Ash, but the jury is still out on whether it can sustain the momentum the franchise needs. The movie, which premieres in December 2025, promises to be a war movie of grand proportions thanks to its exploration of new cultures among the Na'vi and the animosity that has developed between the large blue creatures and a newly introduced clan, the Ash people. Everything is at stake in the upcoming film, not just for Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family but also for James Cameron himself. Avatar is one of the most expensive film series ever created, so the films need to make a lot at the box office to be deemed a success. So far it has done that, and more, as the original Avatar became the first film to make more than $2bn at the box office while the sequel The Way of Water beat that. But can the franchise strike gold again? There does seem to be a reason that audiences have gravitated so strongly to the Titanic director's fantastical world so far. The story is perhaps the oldest there is, the battle between good and evil. The first and second explore this through the clash between humans and Na'vi, while Fire and Ash is arguably doing the same thing, but with slightly more nuance because it's between different cultures within the alien species. It's the kind of story that audiences will always be drawn to, regardless of its simplicity, actually, perhaps because of it. It doesn't matter if they're seven-foot-tall blue people, the Na'vi are fascinating and experience the same things we do. Viewers from all walks of life can relate to and be transported by Avatar; that's the beauty of Cameron's vision for Pandora. Critics though, for better or worse, are now quite divided by the franchise — where the first was deemed a movie marvel that changed the film landscape forever, The Way of Water wasn't received as well with reviews veering wildly between 5 star and 2 stars, one reviewer even described the 2022 film a glorified "trillion-dollar screensaver". But if ever there was a time that proved that critics aren't the be-all and end-all of movie success, it was The Way of Water, because the film earned $2.32bn worldwide and became the highest-grossing film since the Covid pandemic. Why is that? Because audiences want escapism, that's the whole point of cinema; audiences want to forget their troubles and be taken far, far away for a few hours, and Avatar is the perfect movie for it, thanks to its awe-inspiring visuals and innovative use of technology. The question is, can Fire and Ash mirror the success of the first two Avatar films? If early reactions to the trailer are anything to go by, it will do that and more. In fact, even the critics are back on side ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, for example, wrote on X: "I just EXPERIENCED the #AvatarFireAndAsh trailer in glorious 3D. I'm breathless... What a privilege it is to be alive during this revolutionary franchise." While critic Austin Burke wrote on the social media platform: "There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and epic doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice… It is truly beyond epic. THE HYPE IS REAL.' With praise like this, the buzz is going to be gaining momentum quickly for Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of its December release. One thing is for sure, it'll mark a great end of the year for Hollywood. No one should ever count James Cameron out, really, the director always has a clear vision and he knows how to make epic films that have huge mainstream appeal, whether that be sweeping romances like Titanic or gut-punching action like The Terminator. He knows how to make a great popcorn movie, the kind that will stand the test of time and do extremely well at the box office. There's a reason he is seen as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. And the Avatar film franchise could well become his magnum opus by the time it reaches its fifth, and currently final, film in 2031. But, before that, at least, we have Fire & Ash to enjoy — long live cinema. Avatar: Fire & Ash premieres in UK cinemas on 19 December, 2025.

‘Bend It Like Beckham 2' Is Reportedly ‘In the Works'

This week, writer and director Gurinder Chadha announced she is working on a sequel to the hit soccer film Bend It Like Beckham, released in 2002 and starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. 'I'm excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women's game,' Chadha told Deadline in an interview. Here's everything we know about the project so far. In the original film, Nagra plays a teen girl named Jasminder who loves both soccer and Manchester United's David Beckham. Unfortunately, her parents are very unenthusiastic about her engaging in sports. She ends up joining a girls's soccer team in secret, where she meets Jules, played by Knightley. There, she discovers just how great she can be while also learning to navigate first romances and friendship. Her success ultimately brings her closer to her family in an uplifting story about following your dreams. Since it's 23 years later, everyone would obviously be in a new time in their lives. Chadha says a sequel will also address the changes in women's sports. 'I didn't want to do anything because I didn't have a story,' she said of the time gap since the first film. 'And then I came up with a great story, really super-cool story. So now I'm inspired. Literally came up with it just about a month ago. It's my very clear wish to bring the characters back very, very soon. Women's football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever. It is an honor for me to be a small part of it.' She wrote the original screenplay with Guljit Bindra and husband Paul Mayeda Berges. Aside from Nagra and Knightley, fans would expect the return of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the Hounslow Harriers team manager and Jasminder's love interest. But so far, no one is officially confirmed. Chadha stated that Nagra, Knightley, as well as cast members Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson 'are aware that a sequel is being developed, but they obviously want to see a script before they commit.' 'I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back,' she added. 'Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.' The goal for Chadha is to have the sequel out by 2027 for the original film's 25th anniversary, which will coincide with the FIFA Women's World Cup tournament in Brazil that year.
