MBKS, Bomba empower Kuching villages with fire safety training under Safe City initiative
KUCHING (April 27): Kuching South City Council (MBKS), in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) Sarawak Zon 1, have conducted a fire safety awareness programme, aimed at empowering local village communities with essential fire prevention and emergency response skills.
The two-day programme, held in the Tabuan Jaya area, saw the participation of 50 residents from five villages namely Kampung Tabuan Paya, Kampung Tabuan Jaya Tengah, Kampung Tabuan Dayak (Bukit), Kampung Sungai Nada, and Kampung Tabuan Laru.
Participants underwent both theoretical and hands-on training, including fire suppression simulations and the proper use of firefighting equipment.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, in his speech at the event, emphasised that fire safety is a shared responsibility and called for similar initiatives to be extended to more villages and residential areas.
'This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to building a more resilient and prepared community.
'It is not just about lectures – it is about empowering the communities with essential knowledge and practical training to respond effectively when fire incidents occur.
'MBKS believes that safety begins at home, and therefore, we will continue to work with partners such as Bomba to expand such programmes to other areas within the council's jurisdiction,' said Wee.
As part of its Safe City Programme initiative, MBKS contributed 10 units of fire extinguishers to the five villages under its jurisdiction to further enhance local preparedness.
Meanwhile, Bomba Sarawak Deputy Director Tiong Ling Hii said the initiative was designed as a platform to raise awareness and impart life-saving knowledge.
It also introduced the concept of 'community firefighters' where individuals were trained to act as first responders before emergency services arrive.
'This programme differs from traditional fire awareness or prevention campaigns.

Bomba believes in starting them young when it comes to fire safety
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) believes it is important to introduce fire safety education in communities by involving all age groups, especially children. Aiming to strengthen education by emphasising the principle of "prevention is better than cure', its awareness programmes start for children from as young as five years using a phased, community-based approach, says department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad (pic). "We begin with Kelab Bomba Cilik for children aged five to six, where they are given basic fire safety lessons and early exposure to water hazards, as the department also serves as the secretariat of the Water Activities Safety Council,' he said when interviewed recently. ALSO READ: Stricter fire safety rules soon "When they are involved from a young age, they indirectly become part of the firefighters' family, which helps us engage with the community more effectively,' he added. He said this education continues at secondary level through the Kadet Bomba programme, while at tertiary institutions, Fire Brigades have been set up in 12 institutions offering diploma and Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) qualifications, along with the Kor Siswa Bomba in three public universities. Nor Hisham said the department also launched the Bomba Junior programme last year to expand fire safety education in primary schools. "Previously, no such programme existed at the primary level. We initially targeted 16 teams, but the response was overwhelming and now we have 273 teams,' he said. "Our programmes aim to educate the public on fire prevention and emergency safety, train them to be more prepared while awaiting rescuers, and instil the understanding that safety is a shared responsibility, not solely the authorities',' he said. Community engagement is also promoted through talks, exhibitions, fire drills and initiatives such as "One Home, One Fire Extinguisher" and Sedia Urus Risiko Isirumah (Suri), with more than 12,000 programmes planned yearly. Meanwhile, Nor Hisham said no fees are charged for events held at fire stations, except when the hall facilities are used. "When programmes are held at stations under the Community Fire Learning Centre (CFLC) initiative, we usually ask for 15 minutes to provide a fire prevention briefing,' he said. He noted that CFLC brings firefighters closer to the community and reflects the department's commitment to providing the best public service. "As a government agency, we take this opportunity to provide a positive narrative about public service delivery. Flagged off by Dr Sim himself, the three-kilometre walk was filled with smiles, laughter, and the energy of families, friends, and individuals walking side by side — embodying the true spirit of Kuching. In his speech, Wee said the Mayor's Walk is not just about walking or fitness — it is about building community. 'Just look around you: so many happy faces, families and friends walking together. Since 2017, this walk has been our way of saying: let's get moving, let's stay healthy, and let's grow stronger together.' Wee emphasised that the event symbolises the unity of the city, where everyone, regardless of age or background, is part of one big family. Bomba Sarawak seeks support for portable pumps to fight forest fires

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Bomba Sarawak director Jamri Masran made the request during a courtesy visit to the Premier at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today. 'For example, we recently faced challenges during a forest fire at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Mukah due to constraints in our pumps,' he told reporters after the meeting. 'We raised this matter with the Premier, and Alhamdulillah (Praise be for Allah), he acknowledged it with an open heart and responded positively, saying 'God-willing', he would look into ways to assist us.' Jamri added that the Premier also expressed concern over Bomba Sarawak's readiness in tackling fires in high-rise buildings, in line with the state's rapid development.
