Space is going to patch up Britain's ‘not spots', but can Musk be trusted?
'Data is doubling every year,' says Dr Adam Beaumont, an innovation advisor to the Government and founder of the pioneering network builder AQL, which created the first UK ground station for Musk's space constellation.
'We're handling many terabytes of data every day on behalf of the satellite community'.
Space internet has traditionally relied on ancient, geostationary satellites that transmit data a few bytes at a time. But the revolution that Musk began involves low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that are far closer to us here on Earth. They bring far greater capacity and speed so we can use space directly for serious internet services, like Google Maps, rather than basics such as emergency text messages.
'We're now on the cusp of people being able to make [satellite calls] on their everyday smartphones,' boasted Ofcom's spectrum director David Willis last week.
This is called 'direct to device' (D2D) communications, which mean you won't need a clunky satellite phone that wouldn't look out of place in the A-Team – you can just use the phone you already have, and no special SIM or app is required.
In January, Vodafone made the first D2D video call in the world from a mountain in Wales, using an ordinary smartphone, in a location where there was no existing mobile coverage. The coverage bars on the phone lit up as the invisible satellite passed overhead.
It's the result of a joint venture between the Texan space company AST Space Mobile and Vodafone. In layman's terms, they've put a standard 4G phone dish in space, so it becomes a seamless extension of the existing phone network. Only this 'dish' is around 300 miles away, and moving at 18,000 miles per hour.
Five Blue Walker satellites are already operating, and dozens more will be operating by the end of the year. Around 90 are needed to provide full global coverage, says Vodafone. Ofcom is rushing to iron out the regulatory wrinkles.
It really is a spectacular feat of engineering. The second generation of AST's Blue Walker satellite unfolds into a 2,400 square foot panel, around the size of a doubles tennis court. The surface is almost entirely an antenna. (Astronomers aren't very happy – these 'BlueBirds' are already amongst the brightest objects in the night sky.)
Now you may well wonder why you can't get a decent signal from your mobile operator when the antenna is only hundreds of yards away, but you can from something 300 miles away. It's a good question. Size is everything, the boffins explain – while the panel in space is vast, the local dish giving you mobile service now isn't much larger than a chef's wok.
'The bigger they are, the more power and gain you can put on that signal,' explains Vodafone's Future Technologies researcher Rowan Chesmer, the technical lead for the group's D2D work.
Cleverly, the design means that almost all the heavy processing gear – the racks and enormous air conditioner style units that sit underneath our terrestrial mobile base stations – can be left back on earth.
'You can focus all your power onto the transmitting,' says Chesmer.
By the end of next year, some of us will start to see the benefits. Vodafone hasn't decided exactly how to market it, but expect to see the service offered as a a low cost extra or bundled with top tier plans. A basic, very low speed service will enable calls and WhatsApp messages – a higher bandwidth tier of around 3 megabits per second will allow more. Vodafone will wholesale the satellite service to competitors, such as O2.
Rural voters will be relieved, particularly after Labour slashed the Shared Rural Network – the project meant to fix reception 'not spots' – to save money. And it helps build infrastructure resilience. If a fibre connection to a remote mast is severed, or one base station catches fire, satellites can fill in the gap.
AQL's Beaumont says that every LEO operator is eyeing the D2D market. Musk isn't sitting idle. But as is so often the case with American technology tycoons, he views the market as a zero sum game – for him to win, someone else has to lose.
His ambitions are clearly set on creating a global 'Musknet' – we can infer from regulatory bids for spectrum he has filed around the world. Musknet would effectively bypass Governments and incumbent operators. But his first D2D service, with T-Mobile in the United States, was a controversial project, since it impinged on the performance of existing networks and required a regulatory waiver.
And Musk is more Man Baby than benevolent Sun Baby.
His capricious nature hasn't escaped the watching world. Would someone who has toyed with cutting off Ukrainian armed forces hesitate to throw millions of us off Musknet if he felt like it, to prove a point?
This question has even vexed Italian prime minister Georgia Meloni, a huge Musk fan. Negotiations between Starlink and Italy over a defence communications deal has stalled.
When Vodafone's Tom Griffiths told an industry audience that AST is 'a European sovereign solution', everyone knew what he meant: it wasn't subject to the whims of one billionaire founder who could cut them off at any moment.
Space isn't a panacea, but with smart, market minded regulation it will help 'not spot' Britain feel less blighted.

Elon Musk makes surprise touchdown in small B.C. town
A small B.C town is buzzing after the world's richest man made an unexpected touchdown this past weekend. Elon Musk, the CEO of X and Tesla and a former White House adviser, landed in Bella Bella on B.C.'s Central Coast on Saturday in a small private aircraft before being flown out by helicopter. He returned to the airstrip on Monday and flew out. Local Seán Carter says the fishing community of about 1,500 people in the Great Bear Rainforest, 470 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, is used to seeing the rich and famous — including members of the Royal Family — pass through to take advantage of the recreational opportunities in the area, but Musk is at another level. "It's not every day the richest man comes through," he said. "That's gonna be a tough one to top." Carter says the common belief is Musk was passing through on his way to a property off the coast owned by James Murdoch, the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The Globe and Mail reported in 2017 that the younger Murdoch had purchased a property for recreational use off the B.C. coast due to his love of the area. He is also a board member of Tesla, where Musk serves as CEO. CBC News has reached out to Tesla for comment. Musk a Canadian citizen An online service which tracks a private jet belonging to Musk shows the craft landed in Vancouver late Friday night and left Monday afternoon. Those times align with photos provided to CBC News, which show Musk arriving in Bella Coola on Saturday and leaving on Monday. Musk, who was born in South Africa, is a Canadian citizen through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Regina. As a teenager, he moved to Canada, where he says he lived and worked in Saskatchewan and Vancouver before studying at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. Earlier this year, he was the subject of a petition calling on the Canadian government to revoke his citizenship due to his role in Trump's White House, as the U.S. president was ramping up rhetoric about using a trade war to make Canada a state. In B.C., Premier David Eby excluded Tesla products from its electric vehicle charger rebate program in response to U.S. tariffs, stating, "It's just for Tesla and it's because of Elon Musk." Multiple Canadian municipalities and government agencies have also been re-evaluating their relationship with X, citing Musk's politics. Meanwhile, many rural communities have signed on to use Musk's satellite internet Starlink service to help provide connectivity in remote areas. Musk has shared differing views on Canada over the years. Carter said there was plenty of debate about Musk over the weekend, but politics aside, having him pass through has been the "talk of the town" in Bella Bella. "No matter what your opinions are of the guy, it was something to follow," he said. And, he said, even though he arrived and left in a private jet, Musk wasn't able to get special treatment at the small-town airport. "It was quite busy, so the plane had to land on one side and the helicopter on the other, so he had to get out and walk a long way," he said. "I'm sure he was hoping to kind of come in and out kind of secretly, but there's definitely no secrets here."

SpaceX gives Starship megarocket a redesign ahead of next flight. When will it launch?
A new-and-improved Starship is due to soar halfway across the world in a matter of days. SpaceX has announced a target launch date for a mission referred to as flight 10, which will undoubtedly be a critical test for the gigantic 400-foot Starship spacecraft. For one thing, it's been nearly three months since SpaceX last conducted an uncrewed flight test from Texas for a vehicle that was intended to begin launching more frequently in 2025. And for another, the commercial spaceflight company founded by billionaire Elon Musk has struggled this year to repeat the successes of previous Starship test flights. The first two Starship launches of 2025 ended with the vehicle's upper stage, where astronauts would one day ride, exploding mere minutes into the missions. While Starship streaked further through suborbital space during the most recent May 27 launch, the vehicle still met an untimely end when it spun out of control about halfway through its flight without achieving some of its most important objectives. SpaceX's 10th flight test since April 2023 was then delayed June 18, when the upper stage, simply known as Starship, unexpectedly exploded on the test stand before it was mounted to the rocket booster. As SpaceX gears up for the highly anticipated Starship mission, here's what to know about how the company is redesigning the spacecraft for better performance. When is the next Starship launch from Starbase in Texas? SpaceX has announced plans to conduct the 10th flight test of its Starship spacecraft Sunday, Aug. 24, with a target liftoff time of 6:30 p.m. CT. SpaceX conducts Starship test flights from the company's Starbase headquarters in South Texas, located about 23 miles from Brownsville near the U.S.-Mexico border. Starbase, which Texas voters in Cameron County approved in May to become its own town, attracted some controversy in June when commissioners with the city of Starbase voted unanimously to close several of the city's public streets to outsiders, angering longtime residents and property owners. Musk had long been hinting on social media that a flight test for Starship was due in August. Most recently, the tech mogul had suggested Aug. 1 on X, the social media platform he owns, that the launch could take place in the middle of the month. SpaceX redesigns Starship ahead of flight 10 SpaceX also revealed a redesign to Starship earlier in August after the first three test flights of 2025 all ended in dramatic explosions in the sky. This time around, the Super Heavy booster will feature three grid fins used to help it land instead of four, which SpaceX said in a post on X will improve "vehicle control while enabling the booster to descend at higher angles of attack." The fins are 50% larger and "higher strength" than previous versions, according to SpaceX. Though SpaceX does not have plans to attempt to return the booster to the launch site during flight 10, the company added that the new fins are positioned lower on the booster to align with the mechanical "catch arms" on the tower that has caught Super Heavy in three different demonstrations. What to know about explosions in 2025 SpaceX is developing Starship to be a fully reusable transportation system, meaning both the rocket and vehicle can return to the ground for additional missions. In the years ahead, Starship is set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight. Starship is the centerpiece of Musk's vision of sending the first humans to Mars, and is also critical in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface. But the next-generation spacecraft has yet to reach orbit on any of its nine uncrewed flight tests, which began in 2023. SpaceX received key regulatory approval earlier in 2025 to conduct up to 25 Starship tests a year, after which Musk took to social media to proclaim that the vehicle's next three launches would occur much faster than normal – at a cadence of one "every 3 to 4 weeks." How big is Starship? The Starship, standing nearly 400 feet tall when fully stacked, is regarded as the world's largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever developed. When fully integrated, the launch system is composed of both a 232-foot Super Heavy rocket and the 171-foot upper stage Starship itself, the spacecraft where crew and cargo would ride. That size makes Starship large enough to tower over SpaceX's famous 230-foot-tall Falcon 9 – one of the world's most active rockets. Super Heavy alone is powered by 33 of SpaceX's Raptor engines that give the initial burst of thrust at liftoff. What will SpaceX attempt on next Starship launch from Texas? Here's what to expect
SpaceX will attempt to return Starship's upper stage to the launch site for the first time and once again attempt to deploy test Starlink satellites during a mission known as flight 10. During three separate Starship launches, SpaceX has proven it's capable of returning and "catching" the massive spacecraft's rocket booster at its South Texas launch site. Now, the private rocket company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk is turning its attention elsewhere: Safely landing the vehicle's upper stage, where a crew of astronauts would one day ride to space. The objective is just one of several SpaceX has in store for its next Starship launch from its Starbase headquarters in the Rio Grande Valley. SpaceX also announced plans to take a fourth shot at deploying test Starlink satellites – an objective it has been unable so far to pull off. It's part of a mission Musk and SpaceX refer to as flight 10. As the name suggests, the upcoming launch is the 10th since April 2023 for Starship, which SpaceX is developing to carry astronauts to the moon and Mars. Here's everything to know about what SpaceX is planning for its next Starship flight test. What is the launch date for Starship? SpaceX plans to conduct the 10th flight test of its Starship spacecraft Sunday, Aug. 24, with a target liftoff time of 6:30 p.m. CT. SpaceX conducts Starship test flights from the company's Starbase headquarters in South Texas, located about 23 miles from Brownsville and about 180 miles south of Corpus Christi. Texas voters in Cameron County approved a measure in May for Starbase to become a city, complete with a mayor and a city council. SpaceX plans upper stage return, Starlink test on flight 10 SpaceX has a number of objectives on tap for the next Starship test, including the first attempt at returning the upper stage back to the launch site. If that sounds familiar, it might be because in three different test missions since October 2024, SpaceX successfully flew and caught the rocket booster, known as Super Heavy, at a tower using a pair of mechanical arms nicknamed "chopsticks." But for the second time in a row, SpaceX has no plans to recover the booster, as it instead seeks to once again push its performance beyond what has so far been attempted. Multiple landing burn tests are planned for Super Heavy, which is intended to perform a controlled flip after the upper stage separates in midair before it begins its descent. SpaceX pulled off the maneuver for the first time during the May flight test, which requires less propellant to be held in reserve and enables the rocket to carry a heavier payload. Super Heavy will attempt several in-flight experiments to gather performance data before it's intended to make a water landing off the Gulf of Mexico, which the U.S. government has renamed the Gulf of America. As for the upper stage – simply known as Starship, or Ship – it is intended to once again attempt to deploy Starlink satellite simulators – a key capability for the vehicle in the future that was called off during three previous launches. The eight Starlink simulators, similar in size and weight to next-generation Starlink satellites, will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship and are expected to burn up on re-entry. Additionally, the company plans to once again reignite its Raptor engines in space to attempt an orbital burn – a crucial maneuver to bring a vehicle back to the ground. What is Starship? Starship's upcoming flight test was previously delayed June 18, when the spacecraft unexpectedly exploded while SpaceX was preparing it for launch. No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred as the Starship spacecraft was standing alone on the test stand prior to being mounted on top of the rocket booster. The mishap, which SpaceX later referred to on its website as "a sudden energetic event," completely destroyed the spacecraft and ignited several fires that caused damage in the area surrounding the test stand. The explosion was the latest fiery mishap SpaceX's Starship has encountered during – and, now, prior to – its flight tests in 2025. Starship's most recent demonstration came May 27 when the spacecraft spun out of control roughly halfway through its flight and disintegrated in a fireball. Though Starship was unable to achieve its most important objectives, the distance the vehicle traveled far surpassed the previous 2025 flights in January and March, when Starship exploded within minutes. But when it comes to Starship's development, SpaceX has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing that sometimes leads to explosive ends can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle's design.
