McDonald's India operator falls significantly short of profit estimates as competition, costs bite

Westlife Foodworld, a McDonald's franchisee in India, missed quarterly profit estimates by a wide margin on Wednesday, as restaurant chains faced higher costs and stiff competition from local cafes and online kitchens.
Global fast-food giants, which once drove India's burger and pizza boom, have struggled to boost sales over the past two years due to weak wage growth limiting urban spending and nimble local competitors gaining ground.
Westlife posted a 62% plunge in profit after tax to 12.3 million rupees ($142,303) for the first quarter ended June 30, missing estimates of 50.8 million rupees, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Rising ingredient and labour costs also weighed, as Westlife's expenses climbed 7% during the quarter.
McDonald's promoted K-pop-inspired burgers starting at 69 rupees (80 U.S. cents) to lure diners, helping Westlife post a 0.5% rise in same-store sales, although this was the slowest growth in the past three quarters.
However, Westlife expects better quarters ahead as the franchisee is 'observing positive signals in the market'.
'Westlife anticipates a gradual improvement in dining-out trends as inflation moderates,' Chairperson Amit Jatia said in a statement.
With retail inflation in India cooling to a six-year low in June and expected to ease further in July, corporate India hopes consumer sentiment will improve. However, many analysts have warned that the sharp disinflation may also be a sign of weakening demand.
Earlier in the day, Sapphire Foods India, a KFC and Pizza Hut franchisee, reported a swing to a loss.

Bilawal inaugurates new canal from Karachi

KARACHI: Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari criticised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, dubbing him 'Shehbaz Slow' when it comes to uplift works in Karachi. While inaugurating a 100-million-gallon water project in Hub on Wednesday, the PPP chairman launched a scathing attack on the prime minister and sarcastically called him 'Shehbaz Slow' for delays in the K-IV water project. 'We expected Shehbaz Speed [for Karachi's uplift], but got Shehbaz Slow. Sindh govt decides to initiate 'Hub Canal', other projects It cannot be that Punjab gets Shehbaz Speed while Karachi is left with Shehbaz Slow,' Bilawal added while requesting the prime minister to fulfil his promises regarding the K-IV water project in Karachi. Turning his criticism to India, Bilawal said that the Modi government has conspired to block Pakistan's water supply, likening his tactics to those of Netanyahu. He condemned India's alleged plan to violate the Indus Waters Treaty by constructing dams, calling it 'the biggest historical attack on the Indus River.' 'Karachi's people know how to defend the Sindhu Darya [Indus River]. We will confront India diplomatically and, if needed, on the battlefield,' the PPP chairman warned. Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah declared the project a major gift for Karachi on Independence Day. He said that Karachi's federal water quota would be raised to 200 MGD by December. 'We inaugurated the project on August 13 as promised,' he said, adding that the main beneficiaries would be West Wharf, Keamari, and Central Karachi. The new canal, he said, would bring an additional 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to the city, doubling the capacity previously carried by the old canal. Murad said that the old canal could not transport even 60 MGD effectively, but the new infrastructure would overcome that limitation. 'We built this canal within the fixed time and budget, without any cost escalation,' he stated. 'This is a gift to Karachiites ahead of Independence Day.' The chief minister also announced that the restoration of the old canal would be completed by December, further boosting the city's water capacity to 140 MGD. He added that the provincial government was negotiating with the federal government to increase Sindh and Balochistan's water quota, citing improved water availability due to climate change. Murad said a 35 MGD water treatment plant would also be completed in September to supply industries, freeing up potable water for domestic use. Once the augmentation phase of K-IV is completed through arrangements with the World Bank, Karachi will receive 550 MGD of water, significantly easing shortages. The New Hub Canal spans 21.8 kilometres and includes 11 aqueducts, 19 culverts, and four bridges, with a total capacity of 130 MGD. Phase II of the project involves restoring the old canal, with 21.8 km of its section already closed for accelerated work. The Manghopir pumping station's 150 MGD capacity is also being restored, alongside the refurbishment of the filtration plant.

Sindh unveils SEPRA plan for cheaper power

Listen to article Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning and Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said affordable electricity for businesses and the public is the vision of President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, backed by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Speaking at the "Multi-Stakeholders Conference on Competitive Electric Market in Pakistan," he said the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC) and the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) will ensure cheaper electricity than K-Electric (KE). Power will be generated in Sindh, transmitted through STDC, and priced by the Sindh government instead of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). SEPRA's staff has been hired, and its notification will be issued this month. The first supply will target the K-IV project grid, with a focus on economic zones. He said hybrid parks will help reduce tariffs and that Sindh is adopting global models to resolve energy issues. High capacity charges of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) can be tackled by expanding industries. Several IPP deals have been reviewed, bringing relief to consumers. Shah also noted Sindh has no representation on KE's board and has asked the federal government to allow two provincial representatives. The province has signed an agreement with KE for solar power supply and urged the utility to avoid expensive fuel-based electricity when solar is available. The conference, organised by Renewables First and the Pakistan Business Forum (PBF), aimed to shift from the monopolistic single-buyer model to a competitive market. Speakers stressed the Competitive Trading Bilateral Contracts Market (CTBCM), approved by the ECC and NEPRA decades ago but not operational, is key to affordable electricity.
