Viridis hatches plan for US refinery of Brazilian rare earths product

Viridis Mining & Minerals has unveiled its bold new plans to explore a United States-based rare earth refinery solution through its joint venture entity Viridion, capitalising on surging Western demand for critical minerals amid China's tightening rare earths monopoly.
The company is now eyeing North America to cement its role as a cornerstone in a vertically integrated, ex-China rare earth supply chain. The move comes as the US ramps up its efforts to secure sustainable sources of magnet rare earth oxides (REO) vital for electric vehicles, defence systems and renewable energy technologies.
Viridion is a 50:50 partnership with ASX-listed technology leader Ionic Rare Earths. Through Ionic, Viridis is updating a scoping study to assess the feasibility of producing a US mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) from its flagship Colossus project in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
The study, set for completion in the second half of this year, will build on Ionic's blueprint for a Tennessee-based facility capable of producing 4000 tonnes per annum of separated magnet REO, including dysprosium and terbium, which are also ensnared in China's export restrictions.
Viridis' renowned premium MREC product already looks to be an industry leader, thanks to negligible impurities and cheap processing. Its robust economics, even in a low-price environment, make it an attractive feedstock for global refineries and could help meet the US's urgent need for traceable, high-purity materials.
The US refinery scoping study will evaluate a pilot-scale facility, with discussions already advanced for a Brazilian site to validate processing methodologies. The proposed Tennessee plant, strategically located near potential US partners, would leverage Ionic Technologies' proprietary separation processes, for which Viridion holds exclusive global rights outside Asia and Uganda.
Viridion has had its foot to the floor recently, with the joint venture last month delivering high-purity neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium oxide from recycled magnets, utilising Ionic's cutting-edge hydrometallurgical technology. Last week, the company secured a slice of the Brazilian Government's US$1.4 billion (A$2.15B) strategic minerals program. The funding has turbocharged plans for its local refining and recycling assets, setting the stage for Viridis to export its proven technology to a potential US facility.
Viridis maintains its focus remains with the Colossus project in Brazil, where a pre-feasibility study with engineering firm Hatch is on track for completion within the month. A February scoping study at the project forecast a staggering US$2.28B (A$3.6B) in EBITDA over a 20-year mine life, driven primarily by the all-important magnet rare earths neodymium and praseodymium.
The project's ultra-low operating costs of US$6 a kilogram (A$9.2/kg) total rare earth oxides and high-grade heavy rare earths – estimated at 146 to 156 tonnes per annum of dysprosium and terbium in the first decade - place it in the lowest quartile of rare earth production globally.
The company is engaged in advanced offtake and financing talks with strategic partners, following a successful environmental impact assessment submission in January.
As global supply chains grapple with geopolitical risks, Viridis and by extension Viridion are emerging as front-runners in the race to secure critical minerals. Their US ambitions, now backed by Brazilian government support and Ionic's proven technology, position Viridion to bridge the gap between Western demand and non-Chinese supply.

Trump extends deadline for US TikTok sale to September

US President Donald Trump has extended to September 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the US assets of short-video app TikTok despite a law that mandated a sale or shutdown without significant progress. Trump signed an executive order pushing back Thursday's deadline for 90 more days, a step that he had previously signaled. The Republican president had already twice granted a reprieve from federal enforcement of a law that mandated the sale or shutdown of TikTok that was supposed to take effect in January, absent significant progress toward a sale. Trump has said he wants to keep the app, which helped him woo young voters in the 2024 presidential election, active in the US. He has also expressed optimism that Chinese President Xi Jinping would approve a deal that preserves the app, though it's not clear how significantly the topic has featured in the two countries' ongoing trade talks to resolve a tariff dispute. "We are grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available," TikTok said in a statement posted on its website. The company said it is continuing to work with US Vice President JD Vance's office on the matter. "President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. "President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark," she added, saying the administration will spend the next three months making sure the sale closes so that Americans can keep using TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure. Trump had said on Tuesday that he would "probably, yeah," extend the deadline. "Probably have to get China approval but I think we'll get it," he told reporters aboard Air Force One. "I think President Xi will ultimately approve it." A 2024 law required TikTok to stop operating by January 19 unless TikTok's Chinese parent ByteDance had completed divesting the app's US assets or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale. Trump began his second term as president on January 20 and opted not to enforce the law. He first extended the deadline to early April, and then again last month to June 19. In March, Trump said he would be willing to reduce tariffs on China to get a deal done with ByteDance to sell the short-video app used by 170 million Americans. A deal had been in the works this spring that would spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based firm, majority-owned and operated by US investors, but it was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Some Democrats argue that Trump has no legal authority to extend the deadline and suggest that the deal under consideration would not meet legal requirements.

Everest-US Defence partnership opens funding for WA rubidium play

Everest Metals has secured a seat at a high-level table after being accepted onto the United States Department of Defence's (DoD) Defence Industrial Base Consortium, thanks to its Mt Edon rubidium project in Western Australia's Mid West region. Consortium membership will support Everest's research to advance its high-grade Mt Edon rubidium processing technology as the company bids to become Australia's first rubidium supplier. The consortium is managed by US-based Advanced Technology International. Membership opens the door to prototyping opportunities, streamlined contracts and direct collaboration with US defence initiatives. Management is confident Everest will gain access to non-dilutive DoD funding through its membership, which would allow it to capitalise on a red-hot critical minerals market and future strategic US alliances. The company says the development will supercharge Mt Edon, where a maiden inferred resource of 3.6 million tonnes at 0.22 per cent rubidium oxide holds more than 7900t of the scarce critical mineral. The real kicker for Everest is not the resource, but its patented direct rubidium extraction (DRE) technology, which has a staggering 97 per cent recovery rate. The company believes it can refine its technology with partners Edith Cowan University and the CSIRO, through a commercial pilot plant planned for next year. Everest has grant applications in with the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia, which, added to consortium funding, gives management the confidence to scale up its pilot plant vision while reducing any reliance on shareholder capital. Rubidium is fetching a hefty US$1170 (A$1810) per kilogram for carbonate and is a linchpin for defence, aerospace and high-tech applications, including in night vision imaging, atomic clocks and medical sedatives. With global demand projected to soar from US$4.46 billion (A$6.9B) in 2023 to US$7.2B by 2032 and China's grip on supply tightening, Everest's Mt Edon project could be perfectly timed to meet US calls for a secure, Western-aligned rubidium source. The project's granted mining lease in the Paynes Find Greenstone Belt, 420 kilometres northeast of Perth, means the company has cleared another operational hurdle. Everest says shallow pegmatites start from surface at Mt Edon and are primed for an open-pit mining scenario. With a high-grade resource, proven extraction technology and a direct line to US defence priority spending, Everest is shaping up as a critical minerals frontrunner. The company will now gear up for its pilot plant development and further testwork, as it sorts through an array of non-dilutive funding opportunities in the global critical minerals landscape. Eclipse testwork shows high Greenland rare earths recoveries

Eclipse Metals' intriguing Gronnedal rare earths project in Greenland has cemented its position as a potential key source of the high-value magnet elements, neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, with a clear development pathway. The conclusion follows recent analytical and mineralogical studies by SGS laboratories in Canada on selected samples, which confirm the presence of rare earth minerals including synchysite, bastnasite and monazite. The mineral suite comprises an ideal assemblage to meet global demand for valuable neodymium and praseodymium which are key magnet rare earths feedstock needed for the global drive towards electrification. Testwork samples were obtained from 23 core samples acquired by Eclipse from six historic diamond drill holes put into the Gronnedal deposit in the 1950s to a maximum depth of about 200 metres. The holes are a key input into the company's recent transformational update to its mineral resource estimate, which massively hiked the inferred resource to 89 million tonnes at 6363 parts per million total rare earth oxides (TREO). 'In a time of global supply uncertainty, we're positioning to deliver strategic critical minerals into Western markets - efficiently and at scale.' Eclipse Metals executive chairman Carl Popal Encouragingly, Eclipse says the current 89Mt resource represents no more than about 6 per cent of the known carbonatite body, suggesting extensive growth potential, both laterally and at depth, below the present limit of historical drilling. The mineralogical work utilised a Tescan integrated mineral analyser, X-ray diffraction analysis and chemical analyses to determine the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the samples. The testwork shows the key rare earth minerals are relatively coarse-grained and demonstrate good liberation characteristics at P80 - where 80 per cent of the sample passes through precisely sized sieves within nominated size ranges.
