India Gets LMIC Tag from World Bank
The World Bank has classified India as a lower-middle-income country based on its revised international poverty lines, with the threshold for lowermiddle-income countries (LMICs) set at $4.20 per day using 2021 purchasing power parities (PPPs), Planning Minister Rao Inderjit Singh said in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Based on the revised definition, India's LMIC poverty rate stood at 23.9% in 2022–23, down from 57.7% in 2011–12, he said.

New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day today. Rajya Sabha was adjourned as a mark of respect following the passing of sitting Member Shibu Soren, Lok Sabha was adjourned amid protests by Opposition members on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar. The Lok Sabha witnessed two adjournments today, the first at 11 AM till 2 PM and the second at 2 PM for the day because of noisy protests by the Opposition demanding a discussion on the SIR process in Bihar. For the third week in a row, the Parliament has faced adjournments related to the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar. However, last week both Houses engaged in a two-day discussion on Operation Sindoor with active participation from both the Treasury and Opposition benches. Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect following the demise of sitting Member of Parliament Shibu Soren. The members paid homage to the former Jharkhand Chief Minister and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, who passed away today at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi after a prolonged illness. When the House convened at 11 am, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh expressed condolences, describing Shibu Soren as a senior and distinguished tribal leader who played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights and welfare of tribal communities. CM's domicile policy announcement triggers political slugfest
Patna: In a political slugfest, the opposition Grand Alliance on Monday accused the Nitish Kumar govt of copying their schemes and implementing it as its own in Bihar for votes. The ruling JD(U) questioned the RJD over nominating outsiders like Sanjay Yadav from Haryana to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar quota. CM Nitish Kumar on Monday announced domicile policy in the appointment of teachers in the state. The teacher aspirants had been demanding domicile policy in Bihar and threatened the govt with the slogan of 'No domicile, no vote' in the assembly elections due in Bihar later this year. Student leader Dilip said this is the victory of students. "Heartfelt thanks to the CM of Bihar," he said. But RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, in a sarcastic post on X wrote: "It is a matter of immense happiness that the ideologically bankrupt NDA govt, which used to outright reject our demand for implementing the domicile policy in Bihar, is copying our announcement like our other schemes. It is clear that this copycat NDA govt has no policy and vision of its own. The govt is dancing to our tunes, demands and announcements. National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Monday sought to know from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Union government the timeline for reinstating Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. Abdullah's remarks come on the eve of six years since Article 370 of Jammu and Kashmir was abrogated and the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Also, there has been a strong buzz over the centre planning something on the Jammu and Kashmir 'statehood,' more so after PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the middle of the Monsoon Session of Parliament here on Sunday The former chief minister held the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the Centre to fulfil its promise and urged it to hold elections to Rajya Sabha seats and not deny people the right to speak about their problems. "When are they going to return the statehood? They said that the minute you have elections and the government is formed, the statehood will be restored. What has happened to that? Now they are saying that they will hold elections in two vacant assembly seats, but what about elections to four seats in the Rajya Sabha? Why are they denying people the right to get to that house to speak of their problems?" Abdullah told ANI, reminding the Union government of its promise to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. 'The right things are going to happen at the right time,' Modi said. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on 16 July wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to bring forward legislation to grant full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. 'We urge upon the Government to bring forward legislation in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament to grant full statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,' read the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the two Congress leaders. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
