Martin calls for 'powerful' Rangers connection with the fans

[[Rangers]] take on the Greek side in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round at Ibrox and Martin hopes fans can quickly see the dominant, intense, aggressive team that forms his vision for his reign.
The former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager said: 'Every day I wake up and I'm honoured to be in this position. I feel extremely grateful for it. I'm excited by it and I will give it absolutely everything I've got. We all will.
Russell Martin spoke to the media ahead of his debut (Steve Welsh/PA)
'That's what this club demands, what the people demand, what the supporters demand, who will outstay all of us. I just want to put a team on the pitch that they are proud of.
'It has to start (on Tuesday) and they have to see something to be excited about and we have to see something to be excited about. The players have to feel something to be excited about and it's an amazing opportunity and game to do that.
'What we've seen in training has been amazing. They've come with fresh energy, with willingness and openness to new ideas, to new demands, to maybe different rules to what they've had before and they've been great the way they've embraced it.
'And now the biggest challenge for them is to do it in front of 50,000 people with a game that means so much to so many people. And, for any football player, I think it's the biggest test to be yourself in those situations.

'What we have seen over the last four weeks, the more chance we have of being successful. I hope they play with the same freedom, enjoyment and aggression and willingness to run.
'For the team, it will accelerate the learning. That will improve, whatever happens, there's no doubt about it.
'But I think one of the things that has to come out is that the supporters will leave feeling positively about their team, their new-look team, the way it's going to start to shape up.
'We'll be by no means the finished articled, there's a lot of work that needs to go in, but in four weeks from what we've seen to now, the group has been great and they have to put that on the pitch.
'I hope that the fans will leave feeling excited about what's to come and (there will) start being a real connection. Because I think if we can be connected, the whole club, Ibrox, here, the supporters, if this club has that, with that energy, I think it's going to take some stopping. I think it's really powerful.

'But we have to all believe in something and that will be how much the players are willing to win, the hunger, the character, the desire to show. And I'm confident that we'll see that.'
Martin's demand that his team play out from the back will ensure a different style to what Rangers fans have been accustomed to and the former Scotland hopes they can buy into that process.
'There will be times where it won't require much patience and there will be times where it will,' he said.
'It's not all going to be plain sailing, there will be some bumpy moments but we have to make sure that everyone can understand and see what we are trying to achieve and that the team has enough moments that people can feel excited about.'

We're as prepared for Rangers as we can be, says Motherwell boss

Jens Berthel Askou says his side are ready to face the Ibrox giants Jens Berthel Askou says his Motherwell side are as prepared as they can be for their Premiership opener at home to Rangers next Saturday. ‌ The Lanarkshire side drew 1-1 with German 2 Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin at Fir Park on Friday night in their final warm-up game before Russell Martin brings his Rangers side to town. ‌ Askou feels that the Premier Sports Cup group stage games and friendlies have allowed him to properly assess his squad, so that he knows who should play where, and which areas need to be strengthened. ‌ He said: 'I think we are as prepared as we can be. We would like to have had a few more weeks with just one game a week, because it would have given us some extra time to train and load them differently. 'We could have put more volume into the week, in terms of running and specific phases in training, but that's how it is. 'I think we've got the most out of it, we've had the results we wanted and needed, and progress in many phases of the game, and then we know we have to keep building over the summer. ‌ 'We still have to add players to the squad, and we also know that our goal is not to be the best we can be in July or August, but to be the best team we can be this season, and from next season, see if we can become even better. 'I think the games have been very competitive, so it's not like we've missed competition. There have been some really tough cup games for us as well. 'We had a good intense game against Carlisle United, Twente, and [Hertha Berlin] was surely very competitive as well. ‌ 'We're getting answers every week of what do we think of the players in the squad, who will play that role the most. 'We've swapped a little bit in different positions, because the system we play is a little bit different from what they've been used to. ‌ 'That means some of the answers we had a couple of weeks ago are maybe different to what we're getting now, so it's a bigger puzzle, and we're working with it every day, but I think we're getting more and more valuable information. 'That lets us figure what position we need to target.' On Hertha, Askou said: 'It's the closest we'd get to the standard of Rangers. ‌ 'The team we played is pushing to get back to the Bundesliga, and have a good possibility of getting there, with some really good players who have a lot of experience at a very high level. 'I expected this to be a very hard test, it was for sure, but I think we managed it very well. ‌ 'We looked the fitter team in the end and I was impressed with that and I was happy with many things. 'In the first 10 or 15 minutes during the middle of the second half we started to look really tired, and were able to pull ourselves up, without the possibility to swap five players. 'I was also happy with the intensity that we started the game with, and some of the spells we had throughout the game, and the courage to press them high on many occasions. 'In the moments when we struggled a little bit, we didn't lose the bravery and didn't drop back more than necessary.'

Panathinaikos enlist Celtic spy for Rangers mission as Erik Palmer-Brown reveals what he was told about Ibrox side

Cameron Carter-Vickers dished out his info on the Ibrox side to his international team-mate ahead of crunch UCL return Panathinaikos ace Erik Palmer-Brown revealed he enlisted Celtic pal Cameron Carter-Vickers as a spy in a bid to dump Rangers. ‌ The American defender contacted his international team mate for the inside track on Russell Martin's side ahead of the Champions League qualifying crunch. ‌ Tuesday's first leg never went to plan for the Greek side and Rangers travel to Athens with a 2-0 cushion going into tomorrow's second leg in the Olympic Stadium. ‌ But Palmer-Brown insists the tie is far from over and armed with info from his pals in Scotland, and former Hibs star Jimmy Jeggo who he played with at Austria Vienna, he is determined to send Martin's side crashing. He said: 'Cam's one of the guys I spoke to. I also spoke to Jimmy Jeggo. Cam told me they brought in six or seven new signings so he wasn't too sure but he was telling me about the right back and all the players he did know. 'He just said they are a good team and they are willing to push forward to go and get the win. 'Cam's been my friend for a long time so it kind of cut off quick about the football conversation and went to life because I've just had a kid. 'But it was a good conversation. I know Auston Trusty is there with him now too and what they did last season so congratulations to them. 'Cam is the man, I always saw it coming that he would play at a high level. I know he loves Scotland, he always talks about it so it was a really good conversation.' ‌ Palmer-Brown was one of two Panathinaikos players guilty of spurning big chances before Rangers blazed ahead at Ibrox through Findlay Curtis. The 28-year-old former Manchester City defender watched his first half effort brilliantly saved by Jack Butland, who also denied Filip Duricic twice. ‌ Rui Vitoria's side know they let Gers off the hook with the second half red card dished out to Georgia's Vagiannidis leaving them a man short for the final half hour.. But with temperatures forecast to still be well clear of 30C by kick off time they are ready to turn up the heat on Martin's men. Palmer-Brown said: 'The atmosphere was amazing at Ibrox. The walkout song, Simply the Best, was really cool to walk out to as well. ‌ 'The goalkeeper had a really good performance. Some of these were our mistakes, we had my chance as well. I've got to put that away. 'We hope he doesn't have as good a game as last week. We are going to give it our best. We did a lot of things well. We didn't finish off the chances we created and ultimately that hurt us. 'This is football and sometimes it's cruel. You get unlucky sometimes. ‌ 'This game we need to take advantage of the chances we create. 'As a group we know what's on the line. We can't concede any more goals and we have to score multiple goals so our goal is to go out there, play for the fans, play for the club and we are going to do that to the best of our ability.' ‌ Palmer-Brown knows Panathinaikos have no option but to go after Rangers in a bid to save their £40m Champions League dream. But he also knows the Ibrox side carry a real threat on the counter. He said: 'We learned a lot about Rangers. They are very good with the ball, bringing those wing backs inside a little bit to play. ‌ 'They are also very good in. One on one situations out wide. They had some good options, attacking threats and even off the bench the guy came in and did well. 'We learned we can count the on the counter too. They made mistakes but we never put our chances away. 'I really do believe we can do that, go out there and do this. But also from ourselves our standpoint is to go out there and do what we did similarly and finish our chances. 'We created so many but with the way the result went we know we can't give up too many at the back.'

Newcastle ‘most likely to seal Benjamin Sesko transfer' despite Man Utd being ‘confident he'd pick Red Devils'

NEWCASTLE are leading the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Man Utd are also in the hunt for the 22-year-old, and reportedly feel confident of their chances should they find the money to fund a move for the Slovenian. 5 5 According to reports from the Telegraph, Sesko is most likely to end up in the north-east this summer. The Magpies are likely to have a hefty cash injection into their transfer war chest as Alexander Isak looks increasingly likely to make an expensive move away from the club. If Isak - who Newcastle rate at around £150million - were to leave, his fee could finally turn around what has been a dreadful window for Eddie Howe. The club were eager to sign priority target Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt, but the French striker rejected them for Liverpool when they made a £79million offer to secure his services. Liverpool had initially issued something of a transfer ultimatum to Newcastle - sell Isak to them OR they would take Ekitike. However, now it seems as though Liverpool will take both after all, swooping in and agreeing terms with Isak after he requested to leave Newcastle. Top of the list of potential replacements would be the £70million-rated Sesko, who has netted 39 goals in 87 appearances for RB Leipzig. The 6ft 4in forward has been one of the brightest attacking prospects in Europe since breaking through at RB Salzburg in 2021. Man Utd are also looking at the Slovenian to further bolster their attacking options after their summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo. The pair arrived for a combined £133.5 million from Wolves and Brentford respectively, leaving Utd's transfer kitty running low. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe gives update on Alexander Isak's Liverpool transfer 5 The club feel 'confident' that Sesko would choose a move to Manchester over Newcastle should they pursue the deal, according to reports from ESPN. This is despite the prospect of Champions League football this season on offer in the north east. But Utd view the current valuation of Sesko as prohibitively expensive, and they may be forced to sell assets if they want to challenge for the target man's signature. 5 Ruben Amorim had identified several players for moves, including giving them time off training to negotiate their transfer deals. Only Marcus Rashford has since moved, but that was on loan to Barcelona and only gains the club his wages in saved costs. Their hesitancy to spend big on Sesko could also be in part due to their admiration of Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins, with the Red Devils currently weighing up their options.
