BBC to air animated 'Doctor Who' series for pre-schoolers

June 12 (UPI) -- The BBC has announced plans to air an animated Doctor Who series for pre-schoolers.
"Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor! This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and the magic of the Doctor in a brand new format," Patricia Hidalgo, director of children's and education programming at the BBC, said in a press release on Thursday.
"This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project, as we continue our commitment and investment in the UK's animation industry."
The series will run independently from the live-action show.

No voice cast, premiere date or production company have been selected yet for the cartoon.
Ncuti Gatwa wrapped up his second season as the 15th incarnation of the titular time-traveler in the live-action Doctor Who last month.
The character appeared to regenerate into Billie Piper, who played companion Rose to versions of the Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.
The flagship series has not been officially renewed by the BBC or its U.S. partner Disney+.

June 13 (UPI) -- Steven Spielberg is set to introduce his classic shark thriller, Jaws, for a special NBC broadcast on June 20 in honor of the film's 50th anniversary. "Universal is home to the biggest movies in the world and it doesn't get any bigger than Jaws," Jenny Storms, chief marketing officer at NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, said in a press release on Thursday. As of Sunday, all four Jaws movies will be streaming exclusively on Peacock through July 14. A 50th anniversary edition of the movie will also be released Tuesday on digital and as a 4K/Blu-ray and digital combo pack, which includes the documentary, Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story. The documentary will also air on NatGeo next month as part of its SharkFest programming block.

Each season of the Prime Video show is set in a different location and revolves around new characters whom drifter and former military police officer Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) meets as he crisscrosses the United States by bus and attempts to live off the grid. Gone Tomorrow takes place in New York City. No casting aside from Ritchson has been announced yet. Season 3 -- which premiered in February -- was inspired by Child's Persuader.

Photo by Marcus Nilsson/Bravo June 13 (UPI) -- Tristen Epps-Long has been crowned the winner of Bravo's Top Chef Season 22, beating out fellow finalists Bailey Sullivan and Shuai Wang for the honor Thursday night. "I wanted to come on Top Chef to showcase Afro-Caribbean food and prove that it deserves a place in fine dining," said the owner of Epps & Flows Culinary in Houston. "I didn't do this for myself, nor did I get here on my own. I had a lot of support and people who believed in me that gave me the strength to not quit and keep pushing to the end of this incredible Top Chef journey," he added. "Now, I just hope to be that same support, step or channel for someone else because that's what others were for me." Epps-Long was awarded a $250,000 cash prize, as well as a $125,000 flight credit for Delta Air Lines, a feature story in Food & Wine magazine and an appearance at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. He is also set to be a presenter at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago on Monday.
