Richard Ashcroft: I'm happy Oasis are getting chance to have victory lap

Ashcroft, who fronted The Verve before becoming a solo artist, supported Oasis when they played the first of their series of reunion gigs in Cardiff on Friday.
Speaking to Vernon Kay on his Radio 2 show on Thursday, Ashcroft said The Verve had known brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher for many years and he been the warm-up act for Oasis 'many times' before.
'I've also in a way been there from almost the beginning… our stories are bonded whether we like it or not,' Ashcroft added.
He said the Oasis reunion shows, 16 years after they broke up, are a 'vindication for them that everything they did, it wasn't just some mirage, it wasn't just of the times, their stuff has lasted'.
Ashcroft went on: 'You know, not to have a cliche, they will live forever and I'm just happy for them.
'I'm happy for their mum, their family, everyone involved that they're getting that chance to have a victory lap, you know what I mean?'
Ashcroft was the latest artist to perform in the Piano Room on Kay's show, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra at London's Maida Vale studios.
Ashcroft performed Sonnet, Lover and a cover of Lady by Dennis Wilson and chatted to Vernon about the legacy of Oasis and The Verve.
He said his new solo album is due out in September, after he has finished touring with Oasis.
'I'm buzzing that I'm still here,' he added.
'I'm still making music, people pay me to make music, people pay me to sing live. It's like, I can't complain.'
Asked by Kay whose idea it was for him to support Oasis, Ashcroft said: 'I think it was their promoter, who is my promoter, but I think he had a number of people who would have done it for nothing, and I think he was hoping it was gonna be one of them.
'But I think Liam mentioned it in a meeting and Noel totally agreed because I used to say I supported Noel when I was younger, and Liam, Oasis, as a solo artist, they supported The Verve back in very early days.'
He also joked that when Oasis co-founder and guitarist Bonehead left the band, he would have liked to have filled his position.
'I would have taken the job, to be honest. I'd have been happy. I'd have been happy strumming along to those tunes, you know what I mean? Big weight off my shoulders, just have a laugh.'
Ashcroft also spoke of the timeless appeal of guitar-led bands such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and The Verve.
He told Kay: 'When I saw The Stones not that long ago, I was amazed at the cross-generational crowd.
'You've got grandads, sons, grandsons all together watching a show. And there's not many acts that can pull that off, and Oasis – and I believe myself – can do that. We can bring in multi-generations of families to enjoy it.'
Kay told listeners that the next Piano Room performance will be from Robbie Williams on August 21.

Oasis fans all say same thing about Liam Gallagher as they notice difference to previous tours

Oasis fans were keen to note Liam Gallagher's performance over the last few shows of the Live '25 tour, with many suggesting one thing was different to previous tours A major difference on the current Oasis tour has fans of the band talking about an improvement Liam Gallagher has made. The legendary frontman is touring with brother Noel Gallagher for the first time in 16 years, with delighted gig-goers saying there is one major change to note about Liam. ‌ His performances in Cardiff and Manchester have been praised by fans of the group, who say he sounds far better than they thought. The reason behind this has been speculated on by fans, who believe the 52-year-old is taking better care of his vocal cords for this sold-out tour. Oasis Live '25 saw the band play five home shows at Heaton Park, with the last wrapping earlier this week. ‌ ‌ A post to the r/Oasis Reddit page reads: "Does anyone else think Liam is sounding better as the tour rolls on, not worse like so many said would happen?" The fan went on to suggest Gallagher is taking "much better care" of his voice. "Not that I was expecting any different, he takes much better care of his voice nowadays since being properly diagnosed with his Hashimoto's disease [an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid gland], but I assumed his voice would just stay consistent, not get miles better. "People are saying tonight (July 20) was the best gig so far for Liam and I can see why. So much for the ones who said he would sound like s**t within a few gigs." ‌ Gallagher confirmed in 2022 he had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, but fans say he is sounding better and better on the recent Oasis tours. One fan wrote: "The benefit of mostly doing the same set is it should get better each night. Liam looks fitter and healthier so that helps with singing. He's also got that break where Noel songs four songs by himself, so he can have two halves." ‌ Another added: "Well they are seven shows in. If his voice was going already it would be time to pack it in for good." A third shared: "I'm sure he will keep it up, but it is still basically the start of the tour." Other fans have praised the smart booking of the sold-out shows, saying the dates in-between give Gallagher time to rest. One fan suggested: "His voice is totally different, as it should be, if people can't really tell the difference that up to them, seven gigs in spread over 16 days, the management team no the problem and they are doing a great job, hope every enjoys the shows, I did. "They have managed his voice by spreading the dates out, it's not like an old Oasis tour from years back, night after night, they have spaced the tour very well and it's working well I think." Noel Gallagher, 58, has received just as much praise from gig-goers, who say his confidence on guitar is "better and better" with every show. A fan pointed out that Noel's musical skills appear to be sharpening with every show. "Noel's guitar playing is getting better every night," the fan said.

Radio 2's Zoe Ball shares love life insight as she says one gesture 'properly made me cry'

Zoe Ball and fellow radio star Jo Whiley were reflecting on the best presents they have been given during a conversation on their new Dig It! podcast Zoe Ball admits she 'properly cried' at a thoughtful gesture from someone 'special' to her. BBC Radio 2 star Zoe made the admission while considering the best gifts she has given and received. ‌ On the Dig It podcast, fellow presenter Jo Whiley explained the best present her husband Steve Morton has ever given her was a replica of her first car. She explained the baby blue Renault 4 was 'exactly the same' as the one she had as a youngster. ‌ It led Zoe to say the 'only thing' about buying such a gift is that it sets the bar so high. However she recalled one touching present she received from 'someone she adores' that brought her to tears. ‌ She said: 'Someone special to me took all of the messages and some of the things we'd sent each other and put them into a book and this book is bound, it is so beautiful, it properly made me cry. It's like, 'Oh my goodness me, you've captured all those lovely early messages', and there's funny things, there's moving things and it is beautifully bound and it is on the shelf next to two books of poetry. 'It's such a special thing and just between the two of us and I was like, 'Wow'. But then, follow that! How do you follow that? Go low, go with the chopping board and then build up.' ‌ Co-host Jo Wiley called the gift a 'mic drop' moment. She added: 'Photobooks I think are really good but that is next level, it really is.' Back in May Zoe made her return to Radio 2, six months after stepping away from her popular breakfast show. The early morning slot was instead over by former Radio 1 star Scott Mills. Zoe said it was "time to step away from the very early mornings and focus on family" after the death of her mother Julia. Announcing the new show, Helen Thomas, head of Radio 2, said: 'Zoe is one of the UK's most loved presenters, so I'm thrilled to announce that she has a new home on Radio 2 on Saturday lunchtimes, plus she'll be hosting various specials for us throughout the year.' ‌ Last year Zoe is also said to have sold her £2 million home in rural Sussex and moved to a townhouse in Brighton and Hove, closer to where her ex-husband Norman Cook, known professionally as Fatboy Slim, lives. Zoe and Norman are both said to have taken up hobbies such as gardening, with Norman also opening the Big Beach Cafe in picturesque Hove. Their son, Woody, told MailOnline: 'In the last five years, it's been funny watching my parents take up gardening both of them. 'These crazy party people I grew up with are now gardening, making puzzles and working in the local café. It's very funny to see that transitional period, just as I'm kind of leaving the nest and now at the start of something big for me in music.' Zoe and ex-husband Norman started dating while he was a DJ and she presented on BBC Radio 1. They married in 1999. They announced their separation in 2016. The former couple share grown-up children Woody and Nelly together.
