Five try to strangle co-inmate at Yerawada observation home
Pune: The Yerawada police on Wednesday registered a case against five juveniles, aged 14-17, residing at the Jawaharlal Nehru observation home for allegedly attempting to strangle a 17-year-old fellow inmate on Tuesday morning after he asked them to clean the toilet. Officer in charge of the observation home Santosh Kumbhar stated in his complaint that the assailants kicked and punched the victim before tearing a towel and using it to strangle him. Senior inspector Ravindra Shelke said, "All the five inmates, charged with attempted murder, were detained for cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and body offences. The victim too is involved in a case of body offence. They have been staying in the observation home for almost six months." He said, "The victim would order inmates to clean the toilets, which he used regularly. He would get the inmates do other tasks, which disturbed the assailants." According to the police, the juveniles then came together and plotted a conspiracy against him. "They called the victim to the washroom area from his barrack, where there is no CCTV surveillance. They kicked and punched him. They then made a rope by cutting the edges of the towel and tried to strangle him with it. After hearing the victim's screams, the caretakers and other staffers rushed and rescued him," Shelke said. "The victim was released from the observation home on Thursday after the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) granted him bail," he said. "We will not detain them in the case. We will make a report on the case about them and produce it before JJB. The inmates will continue to stay in the observation home," Shelke added.
