The age of the fig tree: Why Sylvia Plath speaks to a generation paralysed by choice

Indian Express07-07-2025
Over 60 years have passed, and yet the haunting allure of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar has not dimmed one bit; if anything, it is seeing a renaissance among the younger generations grappling with the debilitating burden of choice. A passage from the novel, now widely known online as the fig tree metaphor, has become a rallying cry for Millennials and Gen Z, spreading rapidly on social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. It is a symbol of the pervasive crisis of decision-making paralysis in a world saturated with opportunity.
In the modern classic, published in 1963, Plath describes a fig tree whose branches each hold a fig, representing a different possible future: marriage, motherhood, literary success, academic prestige, adventure. As the protagonist, Esther Greenwood, a college student, reflects: 'I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked.'
In an age when the world is one our fingertips, for every road taken, their are hundreds of roads not taken. Choosing one future can mean closing the door on a dozen more. In such a case, an abundance of choice that should be liberating, becomes suffocating.
'One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out,' she continues.
The 20s are often framed as a time for making monumental decisions: careers, relationships, where to live. For Gen Z, who face a world overflowing with options, Plath's metaphor of decision paralysis has struck a deep chord, and has become the symbol of the melancholia of an entire generation. Terrified of making the wrong choice, Greenwood can only sit beneath the tree, unable to act, watching the figs fall: 'I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose.'

The reflection, written in the context of the 1950s, has found new resonance in an age defined by limitless possibility. Today, people in their 20s and 30s face an unprecedented abundance of options in all walks of life, whether career paths, cities, partners, and lifestyles. 'I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.'
Even seemingly trivial decisions such as how to spend a lunch break, which film to watch, what book to read become exhausting. The metaphor extends: the figs multiply, and they rot.
The passage has been circulating widely online for years, often rediscovered and reposted with fervour in bursts. On Reddit, one user, shared: 'I found this excerpt from The Bell Jar today and it really nailed how I feel. The indecision makes me feel like the whole world is going by while I sit and ponder which life I want, and with all that wait, the 'figs' just rot.'
'I'm so haunted by this concept that I have chosen to believe … in a multiverse that contains an alternate universe where I make the opposite choice. I am probably too risk-averse and too afraid of hating my life to ever have a kid in this universe, but I like to think that in a different universe, I'm happily raising a great kid,' confessed another.
On Instagram, users took to posting their own fig trees, with each fruit bearing a possible identity: bookstore owner, singer, writer, cottage dweller. On social media, the fig tree has become a visual metaphor, a personal inventory of dreams and possibilities.
Compounding this is the social media–fuelled culture of comparison. Curated lives — seamless work–life balance, creative fulfilment, perfectly plated brunches — create a subtle pressure: to do more, choose faster, live fuller. The failure to keep up breeds a quiet sense of inadequacy.

This generation, often accused of indecision or delay, may instead be confronting the profound pressure to live multiple lives in one — to 'have it all'. There is a quiet sorrow in realising that to choose one life is to relinquish others. Some doors, once closed, may not open again.
In her 1998 essay, The Mother, the Self, and the Other, scholar Yōko Sakane observes that Esther's indecision is shaped by her discomfort with traditional femininity and her refusal to identify with the women around her. Citing the fig tree passage, she wrote: 'Esther, being an intelligent college student 'with fifteen years of straight A's', could easily choose any of these figs, but she finds herself increasingly incapable of choosing even one. Her sense of loss reveals not only her 'neurotic' ambition of 'wanting two mutually exclusive things at one and the same time', but also a sense of alienation.'
For many today, the metaphor hits home. As one online collective put it: 'We all desire to experience everything. Ironically, we can only afford to pick one to sustain our day-to-day lives… Will [our passions] just wrinkle, go black, and plop to the ground?'
The Bell Jar endures not only for its portrayal of mental illness and feminist unrest, but for its brutally honest confrontation with the paralysis of potential. Plath's fig tree has become a generational emblem of phantom potentials, grief for roads not taken, uncertainty, longing, and the toll of standing still.

Gen Z sparks style rebellion by making heirloom jewellery their go-to everyday statement: Know which styles are trending

Gen Z is straight up raiding their mom's and grandma's jewellery trunks. They are borrowing these heirloom jewellery not just for wedding celebrations any more. These intricate jewellery with beautiful craftsmanship are having a major moment. And just like always, Gen Z's nature to mix and match, these traditional jewellery pieces are also styled with contemporary wear, from dresses to suits. Gen Z Bollywood stars Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Panday are rocking kamarbandh and maang tikka.(PC: Instagram) In an interaction with HT Lifestyle, Garima Maheshwari, Head of Design at Tanishq, shed light on this growing trend of Gen Z embracing heritage jewellery as a form of rebellion, and what pieces are in style. ALSO READ: Saree on a date? Celebrity draper Dolly Jain shares 5 tips to keep it stylish What triggered the interest? Indian youth are slowly saying no thanks to the clean-girl aesthetic and the generic, cookie-cutter fast fashion, minimalism that social media often pushes. Garima revealed that the trigger is a growing desire among Indian youth to indulge in cultural pride. Calling it a 'rebellion' against sameness, she said, 'I think wearing heirloom jewellery is a rebellion against the act of algo-driven sameness. I feel that the whole embracing of Indian-ness, your own identity, your own story, your roots, is also becoming globally accepted, and it kind of reflects a sense of pride and heritage.' Instead of following mass trends, Indian youth, as Garima pointed out, prefer to hold on to pieces that tell their story and reflect their own heritage. It focuses on individuality. They are also often inspired by celebrities who wear traditional jewellery. Janhvi Kapoor is one of the Gen Z celebs frequently seen sporting her heritage South Indian jewellery. In another post, wishing her fans a Happy Vishu, Janhvi wore her traditional South Indian jewellery, from gold kamarbandh to jhumka, beautifully carrying her cultural pride. Innovation like saree Interestingly, Garima drew a parallel between the innovation happening with traditional heirloom jewellery and the transformation of the saree. The six yards of graceful fabric see a lot of experimentation, again spotlighted by celebs like Taapsee Pannu, who often paired a t-shirt or crop top with a saree. Garima opined, 'Saree comes from a sense of pride, you have seen it in your mother's wardrobe. Similarly, building a parallel for understanding, jewellery that you feel is elaborate, beautifully handcrafted, and relevant only for certain outfits, Gen Z have totally come out of that. I say a big thanks to innovative ways of styling, which have now made it effortless to sport a kasu mala with a power suit and walk into your board meeting. Kamarbandhs, or waist belts, are really viable too. Celebrities have sported these looks and made the younger generation fearless in expressing themselves and finding their own sense of validation.' Moreover, Gen Z has an entrepreneurial mindset. Garima shared that their startup spirit is redefining the meaning of heirloom jewellery, as they are not just inheriting these pieces but are also buying and creating heirlooms for themselves. Statement jewellery that is paired with contemporary outfits Garima revealed that the maang tikka is gaining popularity, and it's truly everywhere these days. The maang tikka is the hot new accessory, now being paired with contemporary wear as well. Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan paired a maang tikka with a black leather jacket. Similarly, Lara Rajagopalan, a member of the girl band KATSEYE known for hits like 'Gabriela', wore a mini dress with a maang tikka, showcasing the waves this accessory is making in the fashion scene. Styling rule that sets Gen Z's vibe apart So what is the key distinction of the same jewellery's comeback generations later? Garima shared that years ago, the same jewellery was heavily layered, completely decked, making it look overwhelming. She said, 'The whole focus is on a singular element in jewellery. So, if someone is wearing a kamarbandh, they wear it alone. Back in the older days, it was about decking from head to toe, but that's not relevant to the modern lifestyle.' This excessive layering, as Garima noted, is not practical for today's college-goers or corporate women. Heritage jewellery is no longer restricted to pujas or weddings; now, she added that one may see a corporate woman pairing temple jewellery, jhumkas, a choker with an ethnic dress or even a strappy outfit. Gen Z prefers to spotlight one bold item, like a kamarbandh or a pair of striking jhumkas, keeping these traditional jewellery pieces wearable for everyday fashion. It is that one standout piece that becomes the hero accessory. Garima further explained with the example of mugappu, a South Indian jewellery piece resembling an off-centred brooch with a long chain. It's contemporary and chic on its own, but its beauty lies in the craftsmanship. In the end, she added that storytelling plays a key role in jewellery design, and that Gen Z is deeply invested in the narrative, the story behind what they wear.

Sonakshi Sinha On Plight Of Stray Dogs: ‘Every Day Is A Disappointment'

Published By : Shreyanka Mazumdar Trending Desk Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 17:54 IST Sonakshi Sinha says, 'Every day is a disappointment.' (Photo Credit: Instagram) Sonakshi Sinha has reacted to the Supreme Court's order for the relocation of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR region to shelters. She reposted a post by Dogs of India, which emphasises that street dogs are lacking basic necessities like shelter, vaccination and sterilisation. Alongside this, the actress revealed her honest opinion about the same directive. An excerpt from the note shared by Sonakshi Sinha on her Instagram stories read, 'Street dogs are not a problem, they are victims. Victims of fear, hunger, disease, neglect, cruelty and abandonment," which highlighted the plight of street dogs in India. The post further claimed that the stray dogs are also prone to various dangers such as accidents and abuse. Moreover, it talks about how the unfortunate canines also witness their puppies often suffering the same fate. Sonakshi Sinha Slams The Order For Relocation Of Street Dogs The post further criticises practices like selling, dumping or relocating street dogs to overcrowded shelters, claiming that this step is not in favour of animal welfare. Instead, it emphasises a simple solution for this – spaying (a surgical procedure performed on female animals to remove their ovaries and uterus for effectively preventing them from reproducing, as per a report by the VCA Animal Hospitals) and vaccinating street dogs. Sharing the post, Sonakshi Sinha wrote, 'Day by day we expose how soulless we have become as a society," adding, 'Every day is a disappointment." Celebrities Who Slammed The Order For Relocation Of Stray Dogs Several other prominent celebrities from the industry have reacted to the court's order to relocate street dogs. Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Tiger Shroff, Sophie Choudry and many others penned long notes or reposted viral posts which voiced their opinions, calling the decision 'heartbreaking and cruel." They have pointed out how these steps will result in the complete erasure of the stray dog population. Sophie Choudry Emphasised The Need For A Better Humane Solution On one of her Instagram stories, Sophie wrote, 'This is absolutely heartbreaking and cruel!! There is no way that shelters will have space. There has to be a better solution. What about the actual menaces out there that should be dealt with first?!!" She also shared a piece of experience, adding, 'I get that strays can be scary… I've had a pack of them chase after Tia and me on a beach. It was a narrow escape and could have been terrible. I'm just saying there has to be a more humane solution than what has been declared. As a country, we have to do better when it comes to how we deal with ALL animals. There is far too much cruelty that goes without punishment." Shreyanka Mazumdar Shreyanka Mazumdar is Chief Sub Editor of the entertainment team at News18.
