Penang Dapsy urges DAP to cut all political ties with Akmal

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has called on the national DAP and Dapsy leadership to immediately sever all political ties with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, citing his increasingly extreme political behaviour as a threat to national unity and the rule of law.
Penang Dapsy said the national leadership should take this step particularly in the run-up to the upcoming general election.
It said Akmal's act of openly threatening a public prosecutor, followed by a subsequent gathering, constituted a serious violation of the country's rule of law.
"Such behaviour not only contradicts the stance of the unity government, which celebrates diversity, but also deliberately stokes racial sentiment, thereby undermining public confidence in the government's ability to maintain national stability.
"In reality, when Terengganu Umno Youth and Pas once used an incorrect version of the national flag, Akmal chose to downplay the matter.
"Worse still, in this flag issue, his decision to adopt a tone of hatred towards other races aligns with the racial narrative of Bersatu and Pas.
"Although Umno is part of the unity government, Akmal has become a tool of Perikatan Nasional, whose main role is to create problems and disrupt government administration.
"As such, we urge both the national DAP and Dapsy to sever all forms of political cooperation with Akmal, particularly in the upcoming general election," it said today.
Yesterday, Akmal led more than 300 Umno, Bersatu and Pas supporters in a show of unity and patriotism on a 1.4km march carrying the Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas.
The gathering followed a recent controversy involving an upside-down Jalur Gemilang displayed at a hardware store here.
Penang Dapsy said that in any democratic country, violations of the Flag Act should be investigated and dealt with by the authorities, and not used by politicians as an excuse to act like "moral police" or behave like thugs.
It said Akmal often chanted slogans of "patriotism", but in reality, he was exploiting the issue as cheap political capital for his own gain.
"Akmal's thuggish behaviour has threatened public peace and the freedom of Malaysians to conduct business.
"Penang Dapsy stresses that when politicians are allowed to act outside the bounds of the law while continuing to incite racial hatred, Malaysia becomes a frightening place for its own citizens.
"Akmal's behaviour clearly reflects arrogance and a lack of respect for the rule of law, making him a 'cancer' in the country's political landscape.
"Therefore, Penang Dapsy calls on DAP and national Dapsy to take a clear stand by cutting all ties with any such politician who disrespects the spirit of the rule of law and undermines national unity," it added.
Penang Dapsy said it would continue to defend the rule of law, dignity and safety of every Malaysian citizen.
Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim had urged police to act against Akmal for leading the procession yesterday, which the party claimed defied police instructions and disrupted public order.
Sim described the march as provocative and unlawful, saying it undermined efforts to foster unity during Merdeka month.

Cabinet agrees to act against ‘irresponsible politicians', says minister

Science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang criticised an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month and for bullying. PETALING JAYA : The Cabinet decided yesterday to have firm action taken against 'irresponsible politicians' inciting sentiments over the recent Jalur Gemilang controversy, according to federal minister Chang Lih Kang. Chang, who is minister for science, technology and innovation, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other ministers were 'very concerned' that the issue would dampen public enthusiasm for National Day. Referring to reports of a police investigation regarding the controversy, he said: 'We shall wait and see whether anyone will eventually be charged in court,' Malaysiakini reported him as saying in a speech in Klang today. In a video on social media, Chang took further shots at an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month. 'It's not only irresponsible, it is an act of bullying. Everyone knows who I am talking about.' His remarks appeared to be about Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who led a group to a hardware shop in Penang after its owner was reported to have accidentally hung the national flag upside down. 'We are a nation and society governed by the rule of law. If there is a problem, lodge a police report and let the authorities take action. 'You are not an enforcement agency. You cannot just bring a group of people to someone's shop, disrupt their business and bully them,' Chang said.

Jalur Gemilang: Don't take the law into your own hands

KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged not to take the law into their own hands or engage in unlawful acts against anyone committing offences related to the Jalur Gemilang flag, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said that all matters involving investigations, prosecutions, and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) yesterday. "Do not act as the police, lawyers, or judge. It is wrong. Leave it to the police to investigate, the A-GC to prosecute, and the courts to decide," he said after launching the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu today. The launch was also attended by Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan; and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof. Fahmi said that some people had been called in by the police following a rally held to "teach" certain parties a lesson, but further action would be handled solely by the authorities. He said Malaysians should address issues related to the Jalur Gemilang respectfully and constructively. "As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it. If it is faded, replace it with a new one. If it is improperly flown, correct it ourselves. Let us not sneer, curse, or act uncivilly. We must demonstrate our patriotic spirit during the national month while reminding one another of proper conduct," he added. Fahmi said that the programme included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, comprising 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community. Additional side events included the Safe Internet campaign, aimed at raising awareness of ethical online practices among teacher training institute students. Jalur Gemilang kits were also distributed to IPG senior management and representatives of 12 Madani communities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya as part of the "1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang" initiative. - Bernama

Home Minister: Foreigner's Visa Status Does Not Grant Immunity To Break Malaysian Law

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The visa status held by foreigners does not grant them immunity to break the law in this country. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said firm and stringent action will be taken against any foreign national who violates Malaysia's laws, including breaching pass conditions, posing a security threat, or disturbing public order. He said actions taken include pass cancellation, blacklisting, and deportation to the country of origin, and this principle is applied consistently, irrespective of the individual's background or status. "Visa status, whether as a student, investor, long-term visit pass holder, or participant in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, does not provide immunity from the laws of this country. "The safety of Malaysians and the sovereignty of the nation are non-negotiable priorities," he said in a statement tonight. Saifuddin said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) consistently carries out its enforcement duties in a professional manner, without discrimination or exceptions based on race or country of origin, particularly in cases involving foreigners. He added that the law investigates all reports involving foreign nationals and takes appropriate action to ensure public safety, including in cases that receive media coverage. "Recent incidents involving foreigners that have gone viral have drawn public attention, but it must be emphasised that each case will be handled properly through existing laws," he said. He further said that Malaysia has specified that the recruitment of low-skilled foreign workers is permitted only from 15 officially designated source countries, and China is not among them.
