Gqeberha prosecutor fatally shot, justice minister wants court officials protected

TimesLIVE6 days ago
Regional court prosecutor Tracy Brown, who was attached to the New Brighton court in Gqeberha, was fatally shot on arrival at her home on Thursday afternoon.
The motive for the killing is yet to be confirmed and justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has urged anyone with information to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities in their investigation.
Another Eastern Cape prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, aged 30, was shot dead near his Mthatha home on April 29.
The minister said she is "deeply disturbed that such acts of violence continue to claim the lives of officers of the court".
While the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has security and employee assistance measures in place for prosecutors, Kubayi said there is a need to review and strengthen the measures.
The existing policy on prosecutor safety provides for employee assistance and close protection. but Kubayi said recent events highlight concerning gaps in implementation.
"Thee protections must be reinforced and better coordinated with other security cluster stakeholders to ensure our prosecutors can carry out their duties without fear for their lives.
"Government remains committed to ensuring those who serve the justice system are protected and acts of violence against them are met with the full might of the law."
Police spokesperson Capt Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the prosecutor had arrived home in Young Park at about 3.30pm on Thursday.
"While still seated in her vehicle a Toyota Etios, four unknown suspects wearing masks stopped with a white VW Polo in the street, they got out of the vehicle and multiple shots were fired at her vehicle.
"The deceased was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds but passed away on her arrival. The motive and the suspects are unknown, and the investigation is ongoing."

Man accused of murdering Eersterust woman he met online abandons bail bid

The man accused of luring an Eersterust woman to his home through a Facebook hook-up site, murdering her, and burying her body in a shallow grave has abandoned his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. Helder Isidro (36) from Eersterust is facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice following the death of 30-year-old Loveness Magabe. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, it is alleged that the accused and the deceased initially met on a Facebook hook-up site and later continued communicating via WhatsApp. 'They arranged to meet in person at a lodge in Eersterust on July 26, 2025. 'On the said date, it is alleged that the accused ordered an Uber for the deceased to pick her up from her place of residence in Sunnyside and drop her off at their meeting place. However, the meeting place was not a lodge as initially agreed, but the accused's place of residence.' Mahanjana said that, upon Loveness's arrival before the two met, it is alleged that the deceased sent a message to her friend and told her that the place where she was dropped off looked dodgy, and she also sent her friend a pin location in case she went missing. 'When the deceased failed to return home the following day, July 27 2025, her friend opened a missing person case at the Sunnyside Police Station. 'Following an intensive police investigation, the body of Loveness Magabe was discovered in a shallow grave at the accused's residence in Eersterust on July 31, 2025. Isidro was arrested on August 04, 2025 at his grandmother's residence in Limpopo.' Mahanjana furthermore said the case has been postponed to October 15 2025 for further investigation. 'In a separate matter, the accused is also facing a rape charge and is scheduled to appear in Court 04 on the same date.' Ermelo Court sentence a 41-year-old to life for raping his teen daughter's friend

The Ermelo Regional Court sentenced a 41-year-old man to life imprisonment on Monday, August 4 for the rape of his daughter's friend in 2024. The accused pleaded guilty to the offence and was subsequently convicted. His daughter and the victim were both 16 years old when the incident occurred on March 25, 2024. According to the provincial spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, Monica Nyuswa, the victim visited the man's daughter and had a sleepover at his house. 'The friend became intoxicated and the convict took them home. When they arrived at his home, they fell asleep on the couches. During the night the convict took the victim to his bedroom and raped her. His daughter witnessed her father taking the victim and saw her in his bed,' said Nyuswa. The victim reported the rape at the Ermelo Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and psychological support and legal assistance. In aggravation of the sentence, State Prosecutor Chané Rothman handed in two victim impact statements facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Faith Masingo, compiled by the victim and the convict's daughter. ALSO READ: Services disrupted at Mbombela licensing centre Nyuswa said the victim stated that she suffered a severe depressive episode and even tried to commit suicide. The man's daughter blamed herself and wished that it had happened to her, not her best friend. Rothman argued that the accused was in a position of trust as the victim's parents permitted her to visit and sleep over, stating that the accused was supposed to reprimand the victim and her friend about underage drinking, and that his actions were despicable. ALSO READ: Breyten man convicted of murder Further to that, Rothman pointed out the prevalence of sexual offences in the court's jurisdiction, and that women and children need to be protected. 'The court found no compelling or substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life,' Nyuswa said. The court declared the convict unsuitable to work with children and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Police close probe into missing R465k Sedibeng mayoral chain

She then referred Sowetan to the NPA for reasons not to prosecute. The NPA is yet to respond. When asked for a comment, Maloka said: 'I am unable to comment about a process which was never in my control to give you acceptable outcomes. 'The municipality has a comprehensive security system in place in and around the office, which to date no-one knows or no report is available on how it was breached, so that improvements sought are informed accordingly.' DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala described the closure of the case as disturbing. 'This is a serious matter that leaves suspicions, as the case has be suddenly closed without any arrests or recovery of the mayoral chain,' he said. Chabalala has since written to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an 'unresolved matter'. In the letter, he raised concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of public assets within the Sedibeng district municipality. 'The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. 'Your intervention is critical to restoring confidence and ensuring that those responsible for any negligence or misconduct are held accountable. I trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Please keep me informed of any actions taken or progress made in addressing this issue,' reads part of the letter. SowetanLIVE
