Liverpool's real reason for snubbing Matheus Cunha transfer as Man Utd close in
Matheus Cunha has attracted plenty of potential suitors with his form for Wolverhampton Wanderers but Liverpool gave Manchester United a clear run at the Brazilian
Liverpool stepped away from a move for Matheus Cunha amid concerns about how he might fit into their squad, it has been claimed. The Brazilian international is on the verge of joining Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £62.5million deal after a career-best season at Molineux.
Cunha ended the campaign with 15 league goals - the joint-most for a Brazilian in the Premier League, matching totals posted by Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli. He also signed a contract extension with Wolves midway through the campaign, allowing them to recoup a significant fee.
This was enough to convince United to match his release clause, and there is optimism the deal can be wrapped up before Cunha links up with the Brazil squad. The forward is part of Carlo Ancelotti's first squad since taking over as head coach, with matched against Ecuador and Paraguay on the horizon in early June.
There was a moment when Liverpool looked as though they might rival United for Cunha's signature. However, according to The Mail, their plans changed before the most recent offer from their fellow Premier League side.
The former Atletico Madrid star is understood to have fans at Anfield, but the Reds' depth in attacking areas remained a factor. It has been claimed they weren't fully convinced when it came to how Cunha might fit into the current system, and instead have prioritised other targets.
Top of that list of targets is Florian Wirtz. The Bayer Leverkusen star is being eyed up in a move which would see Liverpool pay a club record sum of £85m or more.
Arne Slot's men are understood to have stolen a march on Bayern Munich, who had previously looked like the most likely winners of the transfer battle. Manchester City and Real Madrid were also mentioned in connection with the 21-year-old, but Liverpool are now leading the race - much to the frustration of Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.
"Much more has been written than spoken," Dreesen told TZ (via the ECHO) before attempting what some have read as a dig at Liverpool over their failure to qualify for the upcoming Club World Cup. "FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe and the world. Our appeal among fans, but also among players, is enormous.
"The fact that not every player will end up with us is simply part of the package; it's the same for other top clubs. But everyone knows: with FC Bayern, you can win everything every year, you're involved in every competition – the upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of that.
"Just look at which clubs are represented there – and, most of all, which (clubs) aren't. The best European clubs are competing there – including FC Bayern. Our appeal, sporting ambitions, and economic power are well known to all top players around the world."

Harvey Elliott's view on Liverpool exit with star key to Florian Wirtz deal
Liverpool are in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over what would be a club-record deal for Florian Wirtz but the Bundesliga outfit are said to be eyeing some of their rivals' players Liverpool are working hard to try and find a breakthrough in their bid to push through a blockbuster summer transfer for Florian Wirtz - and it has now been suggested that a deal could hinge on Harvey Elliott. Elliott, 22, is a player Bayer Leverkusen admire and, as such, there is interest in him heading in the opposite direction if the Bundesliga outfit do give Wirtz the green light to pursue a dream move to the Premier League champions. In the case of Elliott, it remains to be seen if a move to Germany would appeal. But the talented midfielder has found regular football hard to come by under Arne Slot. He started just twice in the Premier League last season, where he made 18 appearances in total. And the former Fulham prospect has already hinted that he may need to consider his future this summer. Speaking after Liverpool were beaten 3-2 away at Brighton in their penultimate game of the season last month, Elliott admitted: "You try not to get too carried away with the celebrations, we've worked really hard throughout the season. "Some lads, like myself, haven't played as much throughout the season, and it's about going out and enjoying it. We want to win and enjoy it. We need to take the positives and take it into the final game next week." Elliott further fuelled such talk when he was spotted in tears on the pitch after Liverpool were coronated as champions just six days later. He once again alluded that he could be on the move this summer after admitting "you never know what's going to happen". He said: 'I think this one, I've played more of a part in winning the league [than the Reds' 2020 triumph]. 'The season that we won it last time I was still a young kid, I think I only made four appearances or something like that. So now it definitely feels like I've been in and around it a lot. 'Since coming back from my injury I've been in every squad, so just being part of it, just doing the travelling, the away games, all the stuff outside of playing, it feels a lot greater this time. 'I'm just trying to enjoy every experience of it, because you never know what's going to happen. 'You can't take these moments for granted, you just need to enjoy it as much as you can, celebrate as much as you can as well.' With Elliott seemingly open to an exit and Leverkusen interested in bringing him to Germany, it would seem the theory of he and Wirtz swapping clubs may have some legs. Liverpool have now seen a second bid for Wirtz worth £109million rejected and are is still some way short of Leverkusen's £126m valuation. The prospect of landing Elliott could, though, soften Leverkusen's stance and help all parties find a breakthrough.

What if... the season came down to improvement?
As the dust settles on the 2024-25 Premier League season, we have been taking a look at some of the alternative ways the the table could have of us will have been there in school. It was not always about being the best, but about being better. Not trying to beat the others' scores or times, but about beating your sport too, it is why personal bests exist. It is a way of measuring your own improvement against what has gone before - we can't all be Usain Bolt and Florence if the Premier League season was all about how you compared to the campaign before, who would have come out on top?Well, there is one clear 29 points more than they had in 2023-24, Nottingham Forest would have been lifting that may not have finished the season quite as they hoped having spent so much time in the Champions League spots, but having narrowly avoided relegation a year ago, this shows the sheer scale of the improvement this nearest challenger on this basis would have been 56 points, they were three points short of their best ever Premier League tally, but having flirted with relegation last time out, it made for a more enjoyable season this time Bournemouth and Fulham may have just missed out on European adventures in the real league, but they are also teams who can be happy with the improvements they are showing as now well-established top-flight despite the chaotic nature of Chelsea since the new ownership came in, they too can look to steady the other end of the scale (or table), it is a very different question whether the traditional 'big six' teams is still relevant, given how others have broken that mould in recent if the season was based on improvement, four of those six would have been at the dropped-off in the league nearly as much as Forest improved. Manchester City had a high bar to reach, but a torrid spell proved costly. Manchester United have set multiple unwanted club records, while Arsenal struggled to maintain a real challenge for the say beware the wounded tiger, and it is hard to see all these sides having the same difficulties next season, but they will not have it all their own way with those teams that are on the up.*All data from Opta and only teams who were in the league in 2023-24
